Activity detected at N Korea test site

Seoul (dpa) - The South Korean military has detected new activity at North Korea's alleged nuclear test site, media reports citing military sources said Saturday.

According to South Korea's Yonhap news agency, the South Korean military and security services are attempting to verify whether North Korea is preparing for a second nuclear weapons test at the site in Punggye-ri in the north-east of the Stalinist country.

"It is clear that there has been movement since the October 9 nuclear test in Punggye-ri," the military source was quoted as saying, adding that previously unidentifiable construction activity was involved.

Another South Korean military source was cited by Yonhap as opining that a second nuclear test was not immediately expected despite the activity in the site.

In a visit by China's State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan to North Korea last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Il said North Korea had no plans for a second nuclear test in the immediate future.
