AL QAEDA TO GET GENEVA CONVENTION RIGHTS?

Bush is scheduled to make some major announcements between 1:30 and 1:45. Drudge has the headline up that Bush Reverses: Al Qaeda to Get Geneva Convention Rights! If this pans out it is sure to be applauded by the ACLU…don’t you think?

ABC News has learned that President Bush will announce that high-value detainees now being held at secret CIA prisons will be transferred to the Department of Defense and granted protections under the 1949 Geneva Conventions. It will be the first time the Administration publicly acknowledges the existence of the prisons.

A source familiar with the president’s announcement says it will apply to all prisoners now being held by the CIA, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the Sept.11 attacks, and senior al Qaeda leader Ramzi Binalshibh.

Hot Air:

Actually, this is pretty shrewd. Superficially, Bush gets to come clean about the CIA prisons and act benevolent in granting this piece of filth POW status in one fell swoop, but what he’s really after is putting public pressure on Congress to approve military tribunals, not full courts-martial, for detainees. It’ll be a lot harder for the House and Senate to grant full due process protection to Al Qaeda prisoners now that one of the potential beneficiaries is the mastermind of 9/11 himself.

What has political correctness done to us?

It will be most interesting to watch this pan out... I don't like the idea of terrorists being granted rights that they themselves will not give to innocent men, women, children, or even enemy combatents (IE, our own soldiers)... Still... I suppose if anything will help us win this war, it will be our setting ourselves above them...

That is a key point. If we lower ourselves to their standards then we are no better than they are. It is my concern though that some people will push for them to have even more rights than this. We already see that in groups like the ACLU and CAIR supporting criminals and terrorists, getting them more rights than the average citizen has.

*rolls eyes* CAIR and ACLU... Doesn't that just say it all?  Cheesy Cheesy

Anyway... Yeah... It's a total snowball effect, and ACLU and other pro-criminal organizations will find a way to latch on to this and drive it further.
