CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.

Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous barb on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.

"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time.

Crew members aboard the boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later, Stainton said.

I'm going to miss this guy.  Cry  I knew that what he did was dangerous and sometimes questioned as being crazy but he had a passion for what he did and a great personality.

Hello Sister Kris,

I don't know anything at all about Steve Irwin's spiritual side, but I know that he produced many high quality and clean television shows that the entire family could enjoy.

I am also a fan, and I will miss him. Animal planet is one of my favorite channels because everything there is clean and wholesome. I don't watch a lot of television, but I did watch a large number of Steve Irwin's shows. He was a lot of fun to watch, and he always had a message of respect for animals and conservation of endangered animals. His shows were educational, and all that I saw were completely appropriate for children to watch. As Christians, we should know that animals are part of God's Creation, and animals are to be respected and cared for. Steve Irwin did get that message across on every show, and he put the message in a way that everyone should understand.

The death of Steve Irwin does make me sad, and I know that many people will miss him. I know that he did have small children, but I don't remember how many or what ages they were. From the point of view as a parent and a Christian, we lost a good, clean, and wholesome television show. This is a time where much of television is dirty and vulgar. Steve Irwin did prove that rough language and vulgar content is not necessary to have a successful television show. I do hope that his show served as an example for television producers, and it will cause them to produce more clean, family programs.

Love In Christ,
Tom

1 Thessalonians 5:8-10 NASB  But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.

Steve Irwins death affected so many here as well as there in America too it seems....over here from that afternoon on jokes bubbled to the surface about him and his death....responses to this were varied...some were horrified about it saying its wrong while others explained that thats how we (esp Aussies) deal with whats goin on that is so bad...(sept 11 was one thing that wasnt made into jokes however i will say that...that would have been wrong). Four days after Steve died an Aussie racecar driver named Peter Brock (everbody over here knew him..not personally obv.) died also. These two deaths made many people realise that death does come to all of us and somethings when we least expect it. These two men died on the job...peter in a race and steve died while filming his daughter bindi's new tv show "Ocean's Deadliest".... its sad that it takes something like this for some peeps to weake up  Undecided

He did, accept current scientific understanding on the process of human origins. He did believe in God, or at least he sometimes talked that way, saying, "But I have a gift. God put me on this planet with a mission.

Hello Tolorah,

I watched several news stories about memorials to Steve Irwin. I watched one this morning where little Bindi talked about her dad. It was heart-breaking and a blunt reminder about just how short and fragile this life on earth is.

I'm glad that Dreamweaver reminded me of the many references that Steve Irwin made to GOD. Death is obviously much different for a Christian. Death is still hard for those who are left behind, but death for a Christian is really a wonderful homecoming to the LORD. It is "absent from the body, present with the LORD."

Love In Christ,
Tom

God always has perfect timing!! From what I've heard Terri's faith has become stronger since his death also which is fantastic. God Bless her and their children Bindi and Bob

Sister Tolorah,

This is wonderful news for the entire family. I know that things will still be difficult for those who are left behind, but GOD will be with them. AND, they now know where the husband and father is - With JESUS.

Love In Christ,
Tom

This is a lot like when Grizzly Man Timothy Treadwell, who was a fellow documentary creator and bear enthusiast, died after being mauled and eaten by bears along with his girlfriend. So sad that nature enthusiasts die horrible deaths and are perceived as being crazy by the masses. God bless both of them and hopefully in Heaven.
