I heard a great sermon on the radio today... on tolerance...
It stated that just a few years ago everyone was crying for justice and now they are crying for tolerance.... if you don't agree with the agenda in the 'world' today, you are considered intolerant.
 What does tolerance mean to you?  Is it good or bad?  Should a Christian be tolerant of homosexuals, abortion, adultery?  Do you feel that Jesus taught tolerance ?
  I would like to hear the opinions about what being tolerant means to all of you....

Tolerance isn’t all it is cracked up to be. Are we to be “tolerant” of a pickpocket, when he takes all our money and our watch? Are we to be “tolerant” of someone wanting to hurt us? Open-mindedness is a better word. Be open-minded, be fast to think, be slow to speak, be slow to act. You don't have to just take it from everyone, you just need to learn who to take it from and who to stand up too, and when to do these things.

The Muslims practice tolerance. I just heard a Muslim on TV the other day who said that Mohammed taught them tolerance and then fighting. The problem with tolerance is that since it is mustered up by the individual, it will eventually erupt, much like trying to push a beach ball under the water. The degree tha you push it down is the degree that it will pop back up. That explains why Mohammed preached tolerance which after a while, ALWAYS reupted in violence.

Real tolerance is forgiveness. it is understanding that none of us can help ourselves and without the grace of God, we are all capable of anything. This leads me to forgive people like Osama Bin Laden. Oh, there will always be consequences for his behavior. Society has to protect itself from others who get out of control. But there is no vindictiveness, only sadness that Osama Bin Laden is doomed in this world and in the world to come.

Romans 12:9.  Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
 10.  Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
 11.  Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
 12.  Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
 13.  Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
 14.  Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
 15.  Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
 16.  Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
 17.  Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
 18.  If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

 19.  Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
 20.  Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
 21.  Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

God's ways are not man's ways, so what is tolerated by a person of God will be different than what is tolerated by a person still in the world.
The above scriptures tell us how people of God should relate and act toward the untolerable things of the world

You will find that those who cry "toleration" the MOST are INTOLERANT of the gospel.
and seek only 'PEACE' while they 'arm'themselves.
and when they feel strong enough they will like caine rise up and slay those they are "in diologue" with.

Every man has the liberty to worship God as he wishes.
But you will find rarely that they will 'tolerate' those who "live Godly in Christ Jesus"

If God had "NO repsect  for Caines offering"
Should we if we say we are Christains 'respect' other religions.
When in truth   when looked at have no GROUNDs as a religion  FOR RESPECT.
Seein that they both deny Christ as to WHO He is and dishonour God.

Therefore we are heading for trouble and the storm clouds are ALREADY gathering.
For when we look at ISREAL who were "for our ensample"
When they forssok God became a PREY for thier enemies and the land was filled with idols and judgment was not long in coming.

Joy,

Good question!

"For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God" Luke 16: 15b

Tolerance has been interchanged with acceptance, and love, which it is not.

For those advocates of "tolerance" it simply means "keep your mouth shut and let me do my own thing"

Jesus was "intolerant" of the money changers. God was "intolerant" of sodomy, in Sodom and Gommorah. He was "intolerant" of the wickedness prior to the flood. The list could go on and on and on.........

For a Christian, the rules of engagement are quite simple. We should love those things that God loves. And when He says He hates something ,we should too.

If the socalled tolerent people were really what they claim,they would never accuse a person of intolerence,because then they would be intolerent people forcing their agenda upon those that are different from them , then their punnishment should be administered to them first,since they started the act act of being intolerent.Maybe then the world would have more peace, no body gets offended.Just alot of wierdo s keeping peace.
Not in this evil world.

All the previous posts had food for thought..... tolerance has turned into intolerance of those who won't tolerate sin in todays' world.... that is how I see it.
    If you see homosexuality as a sin, then you are intolerant of that 'lifestyle'.... whether it is in the Bible or not doesn't matter to anyone.... and if you say you think it is a sin then you are seen as homophobic.... never for one minute saying that you hated the homosexual,,, only that the act  in itself is sinful.....
    If you say that adultery is a sin, you are intolerant of those who  use it as an easy way out of something that they souldn't have taken so lightly in the first place.  there are times that a divorce is allowable, but very few people use adultery as a means of divorce... just that I was not happy.... so I got out!!!
    If you say abortion is a sin..... you are intolerant of the woman who uses this terrible thing as a means of birth control... they don't use it to save the life of the mother, just that the mother doesn't 'want' the child, so let's get rid of it... it will be an inconvience or it will ruin my career.... or I can't afford another one,,,, I might have to sacrifice something for it..... just as a convience to get rid of an unplanned problem...... adoption is not an option.... just kill the child...
    I know that there will be a lot of people who will not agree with me on this issue... but I really feel that to be tolerant is to ignore the wisdom that we should have as an adult... whether you agree with Christianity or not, just as a mature, thinking, feeling human being we should see that these things are wrong to the degree that they are used.... partial birth abortion comes to mind.... my God,,, a fully formed child, killed as it comes out of the womb...... who are we kidding that this is not murder.... this is not a fetus,, a thing, a blob, this is a fully formed human being...... If a mother can be held responsible for drinking while pregnant,,,,, what is she hurting, a thing or a child!!!!!  Think about it!!!! Please,,,,
    We are taking marriage, an institution that God blessed and made and are making a mockery of it.... tolerate same sex marriage, what would then stop people from having two wives or five husbands in one family ?  What then, would a family be?Huh
  We are taking God out of everything we can think of in this country , school prayer, pledge of alegience, ten commandments.  Soon, because of tolerant people who are intolerant of Christianity, we will have eliminated God from the US.... then we will be a Godless country, that will be ripe for the vengance of God.... Some say it has already started,,,,, A thing that I am beginning to believe,,, But it will surely come if we, as Christians don't start standing up for what is ture, holy, and right!!!! SIN IS SIN... tolerance is not an option.... praying for these people is fine and dandy, but fighting evil where we see it is also not an option ,, it is an obligation!!!
   I will get down off of my soap box now and give others a chance to give their opinion!!!
   Praise God, He is good!!!!    Joy

Just to add a thought , I believe a Christian should never tolerate his own sin, nor particapate in the sins of others. But we are to be tolerant of others as much as is possible for us, but not their sins,thats sometimes hard to handle.  Thats a life only God can live through us, we really need his help daily.

Maybe Psalm 1:1  could help preserve us from getting into trouble.    Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.2 But His delight is in the Law of the Lord...
