"Everybody Does It"

The result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. Romans 5:18b

Last year, Rutgers University released a survey that reported 47% of graduate students admitted they cheated. Even worse, 56% of college students who were taking advanced courses in business confessed to the same action.

With so many trying to break the rules, it wasn’t surprising when the Associated Press carried two stories last week telling how cheating can cost a student big time. At Colorado’s Air Force Academy, fifteen first-year cadets were expelled from the school for sharing answers to a test, and at Duke University, nine students faced expulsion for the same infraction.

Cheating will cost the Duke students close to $50,000 in lost tuition and incidentals while the disgraced Air Force Academy students are going home to face parents and friends who had been, only a few months ago, button-popping proud.

What can these young men and women say to try to excuse their actions? I think the most common explanation, “But everybody’s doing it,” isn’t going to do the job.

Scripture is clear. The Lord doesn’t think too much of the explanation, “everybody’s doing it.” On the contrary, when God’s great flood destroyed all of humanity, the only people saved were the eight folks who weren’t ‘doing it.’ The book of Judges repeatedly tells how the Lord ignored the excuse, “everybody’s doing it,” and punished the crowds who had decided to desert Him and follow the gods of the Canaanites.

This is why I’m sure that when Jesus returns to this world on Judgment Day, none of us want to be saying, “But Lord, everybody was doing it.” If those words are on our lips, we’re going to find ourselves with a one-way-ticket to a place where we don’t want to go.

It is far better for each of us to lay claim to the forgiveness that has been won for us by the Savior. Because of Jesus, who didn’t do what everybody else has done, we are saved. His unique life has fulfilled the laws that we have broken and conquered the temptations to which we succumb. His one-of-a-kind death has removed the penalty for our sins and His unparalleled resurrection guarantees that all who believe on Him will not perish but have everlasting life.

Today, we rejoice that Jesus has done that which no one else could. We praise the Lord for Jesus’ act of righteousness, which justifies us before the Father.

"What I Know"

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8

These devotions don’t often quote the lyrics of Broadway musicals. Still, the song of the king from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s, “The King and I”, seem most appropriate today. Speaking for many of us, the monarch said something like, “I almost think I am not sure of what I absolutely know.”

He was right. Many things that were once commonly known facts have now been doubted, distrusted, disproved, disbelieved, and denied.

The most recent example of changing truth comes from U.S. scientists who say there appears to be a great deal of water on Mars. Indeed, they’re predicting that the H20 deposits are so vast that if they were to be melted and brought to the surface, they would create an ocean. That’s quite a change from a few years ago when we were told Mars was a dry, dusty, desolate desert.

Like the king said, “I’m no longer certain of the things which I absolutely know.”

Have you been around long enough to agree with us? Do you remember when:

* Eggs were good for you. Then they were bad for you, and now they’re kind of good for us.

* Saint Paul said Timothy should drink a little wine for his stomach’s sake, but then we were told wine was bad for us. Now, we’re informed some wine is a great help in helping ward off disease.

* Packing a few pounds made a portly person seem prosperous?

* Smoking made you successful and sophisticated?

Things do change. They will continue to do so as long as the earth exists. This is why, in a changing world, we should give thanks for a Savior who is the same “yesterday and today and forever.”

Think about what that means. In this world, you and I will always be sinners, but because of Jesus' unfailing, unselfish sacrifice, we will always be forgiven and saved sinners. Life can be depressing, discouraging, disheartening, demoralizing, and disappointing, but in Jesus, death and the devil are defeated. We have been delivered.

A changeless Christ in a changing world, that’s something we can believe in. It’s dependable.

"Not As Easy As It Looks"

Some men came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Mark 2:3-5

In March of 1994, The Associated Press carried a story about some fifth-graders who attended Lake Elementary School in Oceanside, California. The accompanying picture showed, for all the world to see, 14 very bald boys. The article told about Ian Ogorman who had been undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. Knowing it was more than probable he would lose his hair, Ian took the initiative and had his head shaved.

Of course, a single bald boy is going to draw a fair amount of attention and attention is not something most fifth-grade boys want. Realizing that, one of his classmates said, “The last thing Ian would want is to not fit in. We wanted to make him feel better.” So 13 of Ian’s classmates had their heads shaved. It was
a mark of extraordinary compassion and empathy, that which makes you feel pain when someone else hurts.

Jesus, our beloved Savior, certainly felt our lostness when He came into this world. All around, He saw the sadness of lost souls. So that they might be saved, He shouldered their transgressions and carried them to the cross. There, all who believe in Him as their Substitute, find hope and heaven.

Knowing the great tenderness of our Savior, it was not unusual for people to bring the sick to Jesus. That was what happened one day to a paralytic. His friends who had seen his suffering, brought him to the caring Christ. Because of the crowd, they couldn’t get to Jesus. Rather than going home, they went to the roof, tore a hole in the ceiling, and let their friend down in front of the Savior. Their friend was forgiven of his sins and healed in his body. Compassion had made them feel his pain.

It is my hope that I would have done the same. Of course, I wasn’t there. Nor were you. Nevertheless, every day the Lord gives opportunities for His people to carry those who are hurting to Jesus. Will we shoulder the burden? I pray, at those moments, we will remember: Christian compassion makes us feel pain when someone else hurts.

Amen Sister Def!

YES - The TRUTH of JESUS and the CROSS is the most powerful, beautiful, and precious message ever given to mankind. In fact, JESUS CHRIST and the CROSS are the high point of history.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Psalms 23:3 NASB  He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake.

Revelation 1:5 NASB  and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood--

Psalms 18:2 NASB  The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Galatians 2:19-21 NASB  "For through the Law I died to the Law, so that I might live to God. "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. "I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly."

"Real Love"

"As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34

During the Second World War, Solomon Rosenberg, his wife, and two sons were arrested. There was one main rule in the Nazi labor camp: “If you work, you live. If you can’t work, you die.” Every evening the father returned to the barracks and looked for his family. For a few minutes, they would huddle and give thanks for another day.

One day, father came back and his family wasn’t there. He finally found his oldest son, Joshua, crying in a corner. To the father’s heartrending question, the son shared: “Today David (the younger, weaker son) was not strong enough to work. They came for him. When they came for him, he was afraid and he cried. Mama said, ‘There is nothing to be afraid of,’ and she took his hand and went with him."

Who cannot hear that story and not be moved by a woman who would give her life for her child? We are moved and we understand. We understand He was her flesh and blood. Every day as he grew within her, her love grew for him. That love found its fulfillment when she took his hand and went to die with him.

But I wonder, would this mother have done the same for another woman’s child? She might have, most wouldn’t. Jesus lived His life for all of lost humanity. Jesus gave Himself to those who had walked away from Him, who had wanted nothing to do with Him, even for those who hated Him. In this, Jesus is absolutely unique in humankind’s history. You see, every mother I have ever heard of believes in her child. The mothers of murderers and misfits, rebels and rapists, continue to believe in their children They believe there is some small, redeeming quality in their children. Jesus had no such beliefs. He saw into the hearts and souls of humankind. Jesus knew His disciples would desert Him, His listeners would leave Him, and humanity would hate Him. He knew His life would end alone, upon a cross.

Still, Jesus continued to love us. So we might be saved, Jesus lived for us, died for us, and rose for us. All this He did, so that you and I, in our last moment, might have a Savior who would take us by the hand, tell us, “There’s nothing to be afraid of,” and lead us past death into paradise.

"Mother’s Day"

Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. Proverbs 31:10-11

Amazingly, this Mother’s Day devotion is being written at my mother’s kitchen table. She is sitting opposite me doing her daily crossword puzzle. Already today, she has cleaned the house, gone shopping, prepared food for her grandson’s confirmation, and is baking goodies for church Bible class. Sitting next to mom is my wife Pam, who has been equally busy and had the added burden of dealing with me. Both are exceptional Christian women, wives, and mothers, and are far more valuable than rubies. With today’s prices, you might even say they were worth their weight in gasoline.

That’s an opinion that was shared last week by the Massachusetts firm, Salary.com. This company, which calculates what a person should be paid, has said that if mothers were reimbursed for their work they would earn around $140,000 a year. Sound like a lot? Not for a person who puts in a 92 hour week by being a housekeeper, day-care provider, teacher, cook, computer operator, launderer, janitor, domicile engineer, chauffeur, CEO, and psychologist. If you take all the jobs performed by a traditional mom, and paid her accordingly, she would bring in $138,095 a year.

And she would be worth every penny.

But I’m not just talking about “moms” here. I’m talking about Christian moms.

* A Christian mom may never have given biological birth, but she still reflects the love she has been given by Jesus to the children of those who have.

* A Christian mother may never be featured in the pages of People magazine, but she knows that she is high on the list of Jesus’ most beautiful people according to the wee ones entrusted to her care.

* A Christian mother may not love more, but she loves longer, knowing that the Savior’s story she shares speaks of eternity to generations yet unborn.

* A Christian mother knows she is a saved sinner entrusted with the upbringing of sinners who are smaller. She also knows that the word “saved” makes all the difference in her conduct of that trust.

This is why on this Mother’s Day, Christian children, even those who are 58-years-old, give thanks to the Lord for having let us meet Christian mothers and wives.
