"Do-Over"

He said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets." When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. Luke 5:4-6

Many years ago, I found myself serving my own congregation—Bethesda, in Hot Springs, South Dakota—as well as three other vacancy churches. Making the rounds proved quite a challenge. One particular day my alarm failed to go off, which is another way of confessing I turned it off and fell back to sleep. In my haste to make up lost time, I stubbed my toe. As I hobbled to my car, I noticed the right front tire was low. I had to stop at a gas station. Disgusted, I put the pedal to the metal. In record time, I made it to my first stop. I blew into town, failing to notice a stop sign posted at the city limits. The policeman parked there was more observant. Within a block there were flashing lights in my rearview mirror. He was kind enough not to use his siren.

I jumped out of the car and stomped to his vehicle. I was displeased at the idea of a ticket; displeased at being made later than I already was. I grabbed my license from my wallet and mumbled something like, “Go ahead. Give me a ticket. Everything else is going wrong today.” The policeman said in the kind of calm voice that I think policepersons practice for use on hot heads such as me, “Sir, I know just what you mean. I used to have days like that before I became a Christian.”

I wish I could have done that day over. And, although Peter did what the Lord asked in the text above, I know he had more than a few “do-over” days. There was the time he fell asleep in Gethsemane, the night he denied knowing Jesus, or the time he sank on the Sea of Galilee. Peter, me, you. We’ve all had “do-over” days.

One of the great joys for a Christian is the knowledge that Jesus comes to us and forgives us—especially on our “do-over” days. When we stumble, He picks us up. When we fall into sin, He brushes us off and sets us back on the right path. When we make a mess of things, He restores order, peace, and gives us joy. It’s an important thing for Christians to hold onto, especially the next time they have a “do-over” day.

"Flying Away"

And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.” Psalm 55:6

Some have said that British physicist Stephen Hawking has the most brilliant mind in the world. They may be right, but most of us would still prefer to be us. You see, professor Hawking, at the age of 22, was diagnosed with an illness that has robbed him of almost all mobility. Today, while the man’s mind is free and has done some brilliant things, his body is confined to a wheelchair, and he must converse through a specially designed computer.

This is why when a U.S. firm called "Zero Gravity" offered Hawking the opportunity to ride in a specially equipped plane that would allow him to experience the freedom of weightlessness, the professor immediately agreed. Hawking was brought aboard a specially designed 747 that took off from the runway used by the space shuttle at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Through a series of climbs and dives, the professor, with the help of trained assistants, experienced a total of four minutes of weightlessness.

It’s hard to imagine what that experience must have felt like to the professor who was no longer strapped into a wheel chair or confined by this world’s limitations. Maybe professor Hawking said it best when, after his return to earth, he enthusiastically commented, “I could have gone on and on."

Do you think that Jesus’ redeemed people will feel much like professor Hawking did when they get to heaven? So much of what we live with, which we accept as being “normal,” isn’t normal at all. Since that fateful day in the Garden of Eden, sin and its catastrophic consequences have played havoc with what God intended. Ever since, all of humanity has echoed the words of the Psalmist, “Oh that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.” Think for a moment. What will it be like to “fly away and be at rest”, or to enjoy a place where there is no horror and heartbreak, no trouble and terror, no pain, and no problems?

The Savior came into this world as our ransom so that believers might be taken to a place of rest. Now, with Spirit-given faith in the Christ, we know that when this life is over, we will enjoy eternity as God had intended us to enjoy it. Will we join with Professor Hawking and say, “I could have gone on and on?”

Because of Jesus, we will.

Amen, Sister and when that time comes we will have an incorruptible body. It is a wonderful time to look forward to and one that makes this time here more bearable.

"Power Preaching"

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

Shortly after Fidel Castro took over Cuba, 12-year-old Armando hid himself in tall grass at the Havana airport. When a DC-8 slowed to turn for its take-off, Armando ran to the plane, climbed up onto a wheel, and hid himself in the wheel well. Ten minutes after take-off, Armando passed out. The plane landed in Madrid, Spain. That’s when the pilot spotted a boy lying on the tarmac. His clothing was stiff; there was frost around his nose and mouth. The boy was taken to a hospital and asked why he had done such a thing. He replied, “I wanted a new life.”

When most people hear that story, they shake their heads in amazement. Their hearts go out to a young boy who is so sad, so afraid, that he is willing to do almost anything to change his life. Then with a sigh of semi-satisfaction they say to themselves, “Nothing is worth taking that kind of risk.”

Really? Each day I see folks risking their lives for things far less important. We all know people who have put themselves under the surgeon’s knife to achieve a temporary cosmetic change. We’ve seen daredevils risk their lives on a motorcycle, truck, or car to achieve fleeting fame. We’ve watched speeders weave through traffic to pick up a few short seconds of time. All of these people risk much for that which is almost insignificant.

Which leads me to ask, “What would you be willing to risk so that your eternal home might be in heaven rather than hell? Is there any price you would consider too high?” To change our lives in this way, any reasonable person would give everything he has; which is exactly the price Jesus paid for our salvation. So our eternity, our everlasting destiny, might be changed, Jesus gave His life and died upon Calvary’s cross. Jesus gave everything.

Was this foolishness on Jesus’ part? In the eyes of humanity it might be. But for us who are saved—whose lives have been changed for the better—the cross has become the power of God and cause for us to give thanks.

Amen Sister Def!

YES - The TRUTH of JESUS and the CROSS is the most powerful, beautiful, and precious message ever given to mankind. In fact, JESUS CHRIST and the CROSS are the high point of history.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Psalms 23:3 NASB  He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake.

Revelation 1:5 NASB  and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood--

Psalms 18:2 NASB  The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Galatians 2:19-21 NASB  "For through the Law I died to the Law, so that I might live to God. "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. "I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly."
