Two of my latest reads:

The Son of Laughter by Frederick Buechner (a Presbyterian).  It's a retelling (you can tell he's done his homework!) of the Jacob/Isaac/Esau/Rebekah/Rachel/Leah/Joseph narrative.  It opened the little box in which I tried to keep God.  Now, He can be GOD.  Written in 1993, and usually available at Barnes & Noble.

John Paul the Great by Peggy Noonan (a Roman Catholic who worked in the Reagan White House).  This is not just a whitewash of John Paul's mistakes (which he made, and which are discussed).  But the great things he accomplished in his ministry deepened the faith of the author, untold millions of people (many of whom have come to faith in Christ because of the Pope), and me.  This is a beautiful book, and fairly new (2005).

Hope these recommendations are worth something to someone.
