A new resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives calls for the recitation and singing of the Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem and new citizens' oaths in English only.

Cosponsored by Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., and Rep. Jim Ryun, R-Kan., the legislation would be advisory and not enforceable by law. Even so, the congressmen believe it is needed in the wake of a new Spanish version of "The Star Spangled Banner" recently recorded by Latino stars Carlos Ponce, Gloria Trevi and others.

New York Newsday reported the resolution proposes that the House "affirms that statements or songs that symbolize the unity of the Nation ... should be recited or sung in English, the common language of the United States."

"Throughout our history, the English language has been the glue that binds us together as Americans," King said in a statement. "It is only proper that the National Anthem be sung in our common language, English."

King says he believes most Americans opposed the mass illegal-alien rallies that occurred Monday.

"My phone was ringing off the hook … and 99 percent of the callers were against the demonstrators," King told the New York paper.

"I think the rank and file are turned off by illegal immigrants demanding rights."

In November, King sponsored a bill to make English the official language of the United States.

Last week, President Bush said he thinks the National Anthem should be sung only in English. Even so, the Drudge Report points out author Kevin Phillips, in his book "American Dynasty," claims Bush sang the anthem in Spanish while campaigning for president.

"When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, or Philadelphia, in pivotal states, George W. Bush would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing 'The Star-Spangled Banner' in Spanish, sometimes partying with a 'Viva Bush' mariachi band flown in from Texas," wrote Phillips.
