Court rejects appeal by Guantánamo inmates

The US supreme court rejected an appeal yesterday by two Chinese Muslims mistakenly captured as enemy combatants in 2001 and still being held at Guantánamo Bay.

The detention of Abu Bakker Qassim and A'Del Abdu al-Hakim has been ruled unlawful and their lawyers want them freed, a move opposed by the White House unless another country takes them. It fears that the two, ethnic Uighurs who oppose Chinese rule in their region, could be tortured or killed if sent to China.

Germany is said to be under pressure to take them, and a further court appeal will be heard next month.
