I remember reading in one of several books by the noted author, William Manchester, either
Memoirs, about his own experiences as a marine in WWII in the South Pacific, or in his major work,
American Caesar, about Gen. McArthur, an apparently suppressed story that on a tour once in Hawaii, John Wayne visited a hospital amputee ward, and was booed out.
I've never seen the story anywhere else.
I went back to find the account, it's just several sentences, and couldn't relocate it; but I'm pretty sure it's in one of those two books. (Manchester wrote also a major biography, I believe, on JFK, in the 60s.)
