Has anyone taken the time to contemplate what it feels like to be a nut, KristiAnn?  I expect they're very patient, but bursting with potential to do wonderful things when the time comes. They know just how long to hold that potential in check, and they also know when to let it loose. Then they soar up into sprouts, and saplings, and trees; they're always grasping for things higher than them, but their footing is secure. They never stop growing, whether the seasons are kind or cruel; they bear fruit in good times, and if they are made to suffer, they bear even more fruit. All the little nuts are full of this marvelous energy; I'm surprised they lay so still on the autumn ground, when they ought to be leaping and singing. Maybe they know they have to forget themselves before they can ever be their true selves. So they die beneath the leaves and the dirt - and then they pop, and a song comes out, made of sap and cork. I love nuts. |
