Do members of the "Body of Christ" have Guardian Angels?

Paul's Epistles are written to the "Body of Christ" which comprise all believers through the "Gospel of the Grace of God" (Jew or Gentile) from the beginning of his special ministry until a future day in which the "Body" (whether alseep in the grave or alive) will be called up in to the air to meet our Lord Jesus Christ in the heavens. (Acts 20:24, 1 Corinthians 12:27; 1 Timothy 1:12-16; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

This church called "The Body of Christ" is a "New Creature" distinct from God's people of Israel who were called "An Holy Nation." The church which is Christ's Body was brought into being for God's secret purpose called "The Mystery" - "Which He kept hid from ages and generations but now is made known..." as Paul writes; "To the intent that now unto the principalities and power in the heavenly places might be made known by the church the manifold wisdom of God. (Ephesians 1:22,23; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15; 1 Peter 2:9; Ephesians 3:1-10)

In other words, God's purpose in saving us today in this "the dispensation of the grace of God" is for the purpose of teaching the angels in heaven, things that even they never knew concerning the many sides of God's wisdom.

Most importantly, it teaches the Angels how God's wisdom in the Cross has defeated Satan and openly displays Satan's ignorance as God reveals the triumph of His wisdom and power over him. (1 Corinthians 2:7-9; Ephesians 1:8; Colossians 2:13-15)

In God's grace to us, He is using us to teach the Angels, and He will display us in the Heavens forever to demonstrate to the Angels "the riches of His kindness in His grace toward us" - (Ephesians 2:4-7)

Since God's program for us involves teaching the Angels, and since this truth exposes the defeat, failure and doom of the devil and his angels, this truth and those who know it are in a spiritual warfare with "spiritual beings" Ephesians 6:10-12

The armor God has given us is not "guardian Angels," but is the "truth," "righteousness," "peace," "faith" and "hope" found in our position in Christ. Furthermore, 2 Corinthians 10:4 tells us that the "weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds." They are not carnal (fleshly), but spiritual, for we do not fight against flesh and blood. Our weapon is spiritual. It is the Word of God.

Therefore, Jesus Christ through Paul, His Apostle to us, warns us over and over not to be decieved; nor lured into the worship of Angels; nor to be spoiled of our rewards through Angels appearing to teach us another gospel or any other doctrine not found in Paul's Epistles for us. (Colossians 2:18; Galatians 1:8; 2 Corinthians 11:13-15; 1 Timothy 4:1,2)

Interestingly, Colossians 2:18 implies that those who would have you believe a message from an angel or to adore the Angels in worship, have never seen an Angel, though they may testify that they have seen an Angel.

* To the contrary, the Apostle Paul says much about Angels observing, listening and learning of God's grace from us:

"We are made spectacles to the Angels..."1 Corinthians 4:9

"We shall judge the Angels" -1 Corinthians 6:3

We ought to obey the authority God has stablished "because of the Angels" - (perhaps because they are watching our obedience) - 1 Corinthians 11:10

Our position "in Christ in heavenly places" is a show of the kindness and grace of God to the Angels who never had seen such grace - Ephesians 2:4-7

And it was God's intent in forming the Body of Christ to teach the Angelic Host about His "manifest wisdom" - Ephesians 3:10

Paul acknowledges that his words are heard before "the Elect Angels" - 1 Timothy 5:21

Today, we have the privelege and the ministry of using "the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God" (particularity "the Word of His grace" to us;) and by using it we can assist in "spoiling principalities and powers" by the preaching of the Cross and thereby, through faith, save those (Jews or Gentiles) who were a part of the kingdom of Satan - "the power of darkness" and "translate them into the Kingdom of God's dear Son." - (Ephesians 6:17; Acts 20:32; Colossians 2:15; Ephesians 2:8,9; Colossians 1:12-14)

As God's purpose for Israel centers around His kingdom in the earth, so God's purpose for us - the Body of Christ - centers around His kingdom in the heavens. Angels were used to help Israel by informing them and protecting them as a nation, in fulfillment of God's intent for the earth. However, today God is using the church, which is His Body, to help the Angels by informing them and warring against the spiritual wickedness in high places in fulfillment of God's intent for the heavens.

The more one understands the uniqueness of the age in which we live and how it is that we battle in a spiritual warfare for the heavenly places the more insight is gained as to the ministry of Angels today. We, the Body of Christ, are teaching and warring in the heavenly places. We accomplish unseen victories as we "stand fast in the Lord and in the power of His might" using as the weapons of our warfare "the sword of the Spirit" and "praying always" for "boldness" to proclaim "the mystery of the gospel." From that point of view, why would we have guardian Angels?

Rather than Angels helping us, God has given unto us something much more comforting and powerful. He has given to us His Holy Spirit who strengthens us with "power" and "might in the inner man" and "seals" us as God's possession unto the day of our redemption; all to His glory. - (Ephesians 3:14-21; Ephesians 1:13-14)

Instead of protecting us from all the evils that may befall us in life we are instructed to be "filled with the Spirit" and to learn that God's grace is sufficient. In fact, we begin to understand that in our weakness God is made strong in us so that while we may suffer need, go hungry, be afflicted with pain, or suffer loss; we "can do all things through Christ who strengthens us!" What a testimony this is to the power of God's grace in us, both unto man and the Angels. (Ephesians 5:18; Galatians 5:22,23; 2 Corthinians 12:7-10; Philippians 4:11-13)

There is an amazing truth which can only be received by faith. We are told in scripture that our afflictions in this life are working for us. As we walk by faith, motivated by grace, strengthened by God's Spirit, guided by His Word through all the difficulties of life we will be rewarded "a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." If guardian Angels prevented such afflictions, they would be working against you, robbing you of rewards, and the glory God receives through His working in your life. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18; Romans 8:16-18; 2 Timothy 2:9-13; 4:6-8)

...I have seen angels.

It doesn't mean I worship them (nor did they speak to me.)

Guardian angels? Yes, I believe so:

Act 5:19  But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said,...

Act 12:7  And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the8 side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

Mat 18:10  Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

I don't believe that one should rely on a guardian angel though...the Word of God is our armour and is sharper than any two edged sword, and is our first defense, our best offense and should definitely come first. But, are not angels spiritual beings? Did God not create them different from man...is it not God who orders the angels...who sends them at His will?

Heb 1:13 But to which of the angels, did He say at any time, "Sit on My right hand until I make Your enemies Your footstool?"
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for those who shall be heirs of salvation.

btw,  Brotherly Love - if I may interject some thoughts here - I am not sure who Thomas Bruscha is but he seems to be presenting a rather confused view point.

For instance, the reference of Eph 3 which states:
8 This grace was given to me, I being less than the least of all the saints, to preach the gospel of the unsearchable riches of Christ among the nations,
9 and to bring to light all, what is the fellowship of the mystery having been hidden from eternity in God, the One creating all things through Jesus Christ,
10 so that now to the rulers and to the authorities in the heavenlies might be made known through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God,
11 according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,
12 in whom we have boldness and access in confidence through His faith.
13 Therefore, I ask you not to faint at my troubles on your behalf, which is your glory.

The rulers and authorities in the heavenlies in this passage does not refer to God's angels, but to the rulers of darkness and the powers of the prince of air which is satan.  Eph 6 refers to this and so does 2Cr 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Angels have no authority or power in the heavenlies.  They are servants of the Most High God.  They also war in the heavenlies against the angels or spirits of darkness [see Dan 10] This is why Paul said that we war not with flesh and blood, but against the rulers of darkness.  It is a spiritual battle not only for us, but also for the angels of God against the evil forces which are all around us unseen.  God's angels are servants sent to protect us from evil and to minister to us as God wills - referenced by Gracey.

Jesus was also ministered to by angels both after His tempation and in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Also stated in the article is that we teach the angels - I have looked at the scripture references and cannot see a link to this.  I am not clear as to why we would teach the angels about the salvation process - Gabriel announced the birth to Mary and thousands of angels sang at His birth.  I believe, again, that this reference is to the ignorance in which the demons were in, before Jesus died and arose, and therefore "needed an education"  Wink

Another thought that was expressed in the article:
"Interestingly, Colossians 2:18 implies that those who would have you believe a message from an angel or to adore the Angels in worship, have never seen an Angel, though they may testify that they have seen an Angel."

Again, I believe Paul was referring to satan coming with a message that is contrary to the Gospel of Jesus.
2Cr 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

Obviously, he did not mean no one would see an angel, because Peter certainly did.

1 Cor 4 was quoted as angels being a "spectacle":
8 Already you are full! Already you are rich! You have reigned as kings without us! And oh that indeed you did reign, that we also might reign with you.
9 For I think that God has set forth us last, the apostles, as it were appointed to death; for we have become a spectacle to the world and to angels and to men.
10 We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are honorable, but we are despised.
11 Even until this present hour we both hunger and thirst and are naked and are buffeted and have no certain dwelling place.
12 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it;
13 being defamed, we entreat. We are made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now.

In the context of this passage, Paul is referring to his witness of the Gospel to the world and to the spiritual realm.  It is not a "put down" to the angels, it is merely stating that Paul is "exposed" for his testimony of the Gospel and willing to be persecuted for it.  His "witnesses" are the angels, the world, and all men.

Quote:
"Our position "in Christ in heavenly places" is a show of the kindness and grace of God to the Angels who never had seen such grace - Ephesians 2:4-7"

This is a statement that is not defined by this passage - God's grace does not change - He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Quote:
"As God's purpose for Israel centers around His kingdom in the earth, so God's purpose for us - the Body of Christ - centers around His kingdom in the heavens. Angels were used to help Israel by informing them and protecting them as a nation, in fulfillment of God's intent for the earth. However, today God is using the church, which is His Body, to help the Angels by informing them and warring against the spiritual wickedness in high places in fulfillment of God's intent for the heavens."

We do not "help" or "inform" angels.  Angels are sent by God.  They have no contact with humans, unless God directs them.
Angels are also warriors instructed by God to wage war in the heavenlies against the rulers and principalities of darkness.

Quote:
"Instead of protecting us from all the evils that may befall us in life we are instructed to be "filled with the Spirit" and to learn that God's grace is sufficient. (Ephesians 5:18; Galatians 5:22,23; 2 Corthinians 12:7-10; Philippians 4:11-13)"

Angels *do* protect and deliver.  Again, Gracey referred to this, and Heb 1:13 as quoted at the beginning of this post proves as such.  Being filled with the Spirit; being led and controlled by the Holy Spirit; walking in the strength of Messiah is for our spiritual empowerment, refinement, and growth doing that which we are called to do.  Angels are employed by God and at His total command to ensure our safety, according to God's will, from intervention by the powers of darkness - and to accomplish all other acts of obedience that God asks of them.

Quote:
"There is an amazing truth which can only be received by faith. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18; Romans 8:16-18; 2 Timothy 2:9-13; 4:6-8)"

Guardian angels do not prevent all afflictions.  They are the servants of God and obedient to His will alone.  When angels protect us from something, it is because it is God's will in that particular case.  It is by God's grace that we do not endure all that satan has planned for us.  God alone decides what afflicitons we must face and walk through, aided by His Hand -whether that be by the power of the Holy Spirit and/or by His angels.

Lastly, the seven churches in Revelation all had an angel that was assigned to them - angels are part of the realm in which we walk.  They are ministering spirits sent by God for those of us who are inheriting salvation - Heb 1:13

Some people mistaking believe they can converse with and control - or at least make requests of guardian angels. This is of course not possible. Although they are here to look after us, as God tells us. They do not answer to us, they exclusively listen to and obey God, not humans.

The same can be said of conversing with the dead, as many psychics claim to do. The dead are not able to visit us after they have gone. Demons fill in the blanks and are known in the Bible as "familiar spirits" for a reason. God specifically warns us not not do this, or even be associated with people who do.

You are correct Brother Love - however; angels protect us in the *physical* realm from those times when God desires to intervene on our behalf.  This is what I was referencing to in the above post.  The angels fight in the heavenlies, but protect in the physical realm.  We also fight a spiritual battle, but from within by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and armed with the Word of God.

I think most of us can tell of experiences, that were it not for God's angels, we would have been severely injured or killed.

Personal example.

A few years ago, I was traveling down a country road going about 60 mph and came to a small rise in the road.  As I approached the crest and started downward, a car, backing out of a hidden driveway pulled out in front of me.  I slammed on the brakes and started to pull over into the other lane - thank God there were no cars coming.

I "saw" the other car clip the right front fender of my car, but neither felt nor heard anything [I looked afterwards, there was no evidence of a "hit"].  My car, heading for the oncoming gravel shoulder, skidded on contact and propelled my car back across the left lane towards the right lane at a perpendicular angle.

I was traveling at about 45 miles an hour and headed straight for a tree.  I called out:  Jesus help me!  And *instantly* the car stopped dead in the center of the road.  I immediately stepped on the gas and brought it to a standstill on the shoulder, while the two young teen guys in the other car flew over to see if I was alright.

They had been talking when they pulled out and never looked for an oncoming car.  They were white as sheets and shaking.  I was smiling - I very calmly told them to thank Jesus for saving their lives.

I know it was His angels that kept their car from hitting me, and also guiding and then stopping my car so quickly.  The only skid marks were from my initial braking when I saw the boys backing out.  Wink

Praise God for His beautiful, faithful angels!  Grin
