Ive been on the diet for almost 1 year. Ive lost over 120 lbs. I feel  great too! Its really a diet that works with lasting results!! I was wondering if anyone else had been on it? What their results were like and are they still maintaining a low carb eating lifestyle?
It seems now the low carb is everywhere!! At all the restaurants & fast food joints. even MCDonalds has a low carb burger.
Ive got all the Atkins books & like to keep myself updated on it & I have to say, Im glad I found out about it. Smiley

Cakes,
Congratulations on loosing so much weight!  That’s great!  I asked my doctors about the Atkin’s diet and got a resounding NO!  (But, I have other complications which prohibit it.)
Keep in mind; without carbs your kidneys can accumulate too much nitrogen causing kidney failure.  Also your heart functions rely on a certain amount of carbs, and last but not least – your brain needs carbs.
The kidneys are the main concern – you should visit your doctor to make sure they are functioning properly.
After you loose your desired amount of weight – to maintain your good health you may want to consider returning to a balanced diet with plenty of exercise, lots of Bible reading and prayer.  Smiley
Cheers!

My parents went on the diet. Dad lost some weight, and he's keeping it off even though he went back to normal eating. Mom lost a little weight and was doing very well, but for some reason the diet quit working (??) but at least she's staying healthy on it, keeping her blood pressure and cholesterol down, etc. It makes her feel good and keeps the Dr. happy, so I guess its okay even if she's not losing.

I, for one, am not letting ANYONE steal my homemade bread and goat milk.  Grin

It is unnatural for College students for 2 reasons. Either we don’t have the money, or we don’t like the taste of low-carb beer Grin Grin

Natey, congrats on your weight loss. That's great. I have heard some rather troubling things about low-carb, though. JN covered most of it.

Not to mention kidney stones. Plus what happens when you have to go back to eating a normal diet... Good advice, JN!

I've heard that drinking plenty of water every day helps prevent a lot of negative side effects of the Atkins diet...also, with any diet program, its a good idea to have a Doctor's supervision. Not only does it give the medical practitioner some extra cash...but you might stay healthier, too.

Sounds really good to me, NateyCakes.  The others above good reminders

Carbs are necessary, of course.  The key word is "refined" or "processed" carbs.  The farther away from its natural state, in most cases, any carb is--grains, vegetables, fruits--or, that is, the more refined or processed, the worse it is likely to be for us.   The most extreme, refined carbohydrate, of course, is white sugar.  You might as well inject it intravenously.  Following that, of course, are all the candies, and then most desserts.   I don't see anything wrong with a little bit.  I have a candy bar once in awhile.  But not very often.

I heard a radio talk host just today say he's on the Atkins diet, very happy with it, and has learned that what he can eat is on the perimeter of your typical supermarket--dairy, fresh produce, and meats; and most of what he should stay away from, is in the interior of the typical store--chips, breads, canned goods.  So he just walks around the outside aisles of the store, cuz everything he needs is there.

But the trick I think is the sugar content.  Just reduce our sugar, thus reduce the calories.  I think the typical American these days takes in way too much sugar.

When I was younger I went on it and H-A-T-E-D it, but I was a kid and y'know...I wanted to EAT.

I went on it last week, absoloutly hated it, but, I was also coming down with the second stage of a virus that involved severe stomach pains, nausea, and general irritableness,  so THAT could have had a tiny ill effect...ill...hahaha....whatever.

Hospital dietician says this is definitely not the safest way. My doctor agrees. Our body requires a "balanced" diet including carbs. in order to for everything to function correctly (long term, like a lifetime).

I do congratulate you on that extraordinary loss - an excellent way to benefit your health. But you might consider looking for something healthier for the longer haul (I know, it's been a long haul).

Been there, done that and won't do it again.

Thanks yal for the encouragement.
Unfortunately, too many ppl go  "into" this diet uneducated about it. Especially with the water situation. When you go strictly Atkins, it is SO imparative to drink 3x times more water then you would, thus not getting kidney stones & haveing kidney failure. Also, a lot of ppl dont understand that you dont "live" on the Atkins forever ya know? Like you dont live on a Chicken wing, blue cheese, steak & Eggs for 3 years. The object (if you will) is to maintain a low carb diet. To cut out all the breads, pastas, rice, yeasty foods.
As any diet, there are drawbacks, but through reading the books and staying updated in the hosp about it (I am a Nurse/Phlebotomist) I am a A+ believer in the diet. Ive seen its results. I don't think it is for everyone and again, it is SO imprtant to take care of yourself on it. You have to take vitamins everyday to make up for the ones you are not getting from not eating such vege's and fruits.
But your right, your body should have carbs and I think that is where a lot of misconceptions come from. People ar elosing the weight so they feel like they wont ever eat a food with a carb in it again & that just is not the case. When you don't put carbs into your body, your body lives off of the fat, but dont forget, all the saturated fat is going around your heart, so its very important that you get the exercise in too.
Well, sorry I rambled. I just thought Id share. I mean, I live a low carb lifestyle. I eat low carb bread & ice creams and low carb chocolate goodies. I dont think I can tell you when I had a bagel last or french fries, etc. I am NEVER hungry, ever. I just know after trying EVERY diet known to man & buying over $5,000.00 worth of diet pills, I am glad one worked for me and I hope if yal are doing any diet, be safe & good Luck!
God Love you!!!!!!!!!!!:)Smiley
Again, thank you for the kind words!:)Smiley

LOL! The ones who draw your blood...

Ok, this is probably a better explanation Wink:
Quote
What is a phlebotomist?
Phlebotomists draw blood from patients or blood donors for medical testing. They also help prepare and process the tests.
What do phlebotomists do?
Working directly with patients, phlebotomists divide their time between taking blood and working in a laboratory with a lab technologist testing this blood for disease or other abnormalities. Phlebotomists are also responsible for explaining the procedure to patients, updating patient records, preparing stains and reagents, cleaning and sterilizing equipment, and taking a patient’s blood pressure, pulse and respiration rate.
