I had always taken the interest of the Sodomites to have been piqued by the unusual nature of Lot's guests: for in verse 9 it is written "And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge" - they knew that one at least of Lot's guests was there to weigh Sodom in the balance?

God cursed the Sodomites, who would have had relations with the Angels of God, no less, who came down to warn Lot! (Genesis19:4,5) They couldn't even respect the messengers of God enough to leave them be, but rejected Lot's own daughters in favour of these angels.

No wonder that God condemns the homosexuals! Though I am troubled by the thought that Lot would offer his own daughters up as sacrifice to those beasts - maybe he knew in his heart of hearts that God would protect them, or that the Sodomites could never harm them.
