I'll probably get around to reading Bunyan someday I just always thought....what a dreary guy. & I can't say I'm over-fond of his way of expressing himself. As its a classic, I will probably read it soon - once I've got through the book I'm reading at the moment and then I've got some weird book I picked up somewhere about the dance of God or something like that. Well, well, Lance, someone recognised my signature. Though you've quoted two versions in the OE you know. I'm proud of the fact that Caedmon came from my region Procrastination is the thief of time as an old saying goes. LOL Click here for procrastinationDo you hail from Whitby [UK] then ? I'm reading: Tested by Fire: The Fruit of Suffering in the Lives of John Bunyan, William Cowper and David Brainerd by John Piper at the moment. I've never read the Pilgrim's Progress I have a copy though, but I took against Bunyan years ago. I've read Lewis' Pilgrim's Regress though. May I suggest that you read Bunyan, Broken. After all he has a rather long established record. Maybe you will then be "mended." It is rather like saying you read "Herald Tribune" when one is asked to read " New York Times" A Translation of Caedmon's Hymn by Caedmon Nu scylun hergan hefaenricaes uard metudæs maecti end his modgidanc uerc uuldurfadur sue he uundra gihuaes eci dryctin or astelidæ he aerist scop aelda barnum heben til hrofe haleg scepen. tha middungeard moncynnæs uard eci dryctin æfter tiadæ firum foldu frea allmectigprimo cantauit Cædmon istud carmen. He first created for the sons of men Heaven as a roof, the holy Creator, Then Middle-earth the keeper of mankind, The Eternal Lord, afterwards made, The earth for men, the Almighty Lord.

Hi blackeyedpeas, I dare say after 40 years your recollections of "The Pilgrim's Progress" have grown somewhat dim. The entire works of John Bunyan [Geo Offer edition] can be downloaded free from : - http://www.johnbunyan.org/ [at this very moment off line] Those who just want individual books can download those too. It is a wonderful repertoire ABSOLUTELY FREE. The PDF versions are exact reproductions of the original volumes. Some are available as HTML and some as plain text. My wife bought me the original three volumes and they cost a fortune. God bless

Well done aliesh. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool [Isa. 1:18].
God is saying to Judah, “Do not force Me to render sentence. Settle your case out of court.” In Matthew 5:25 the Lord Jesus said, “Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him …”—don’t wait until he takes you to court. God says that He has a secret formula, a divine alchemy, a potent prescription, a powerful potion, a heavenly elixir that will take out sin. It is not a secret formula like the newest bomb, but it is more potent. You will find it in Isaiah 53 as the One who was more marred, who suffered more, who died differently, who was wounded for our transgressions. Because He paid the penalty, the Judge is able now to extend mercy to us. The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, keeps on cleansing from all sin. McGee, J. Vernon, Thru the Bible with J. Vernon McGee, (Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers) 2000, c1981.
"The Pilgrim's Progress" is recognised as being one of the finest literary examples after the Bible.
"Now as Christian was walking solitarily by himself he espied one afar off come crossing over the field to meet him; and their hap was to meet just as they were crossing the way of each other. The gentleman's name that met him was Mr. Worldly-wiseman; he dwelt in the town of Carnal Policy, a very great town, and also hard by from whence Christian came. This man, then, meeting with Christian, and having some inkling of him, for Christian's setting forth from the City of Destruction was much noised abroad, not only in the town where he dwelt, but, also, it began to be the town-talk in some other places. Master Worldly- wiseman, therefore, having some guess of him, by beholding his laborious going, by observing his sighs and groans, and the like, began thus to enter into some talk with Christian.
WORLD. How now, good fellow, whither away after this burdened manner?
CHR. A burdened manner, indeed, as ever, I think, poor creature had! And whereas you ask me, Whither away? I tell you, Sir, I am going to yonder wicket-gate before me; for there, as I am informed, I shall be put into a way to be rid of my heavy burden.
WORLD. Hast thou a wife and children?
CHR. Yes; but I am so laden with this burden, that I cannot take that pleasure in them as formerly; methinks I am as if I had none (1 Cor. 7:29).
WORLD. Wilt thou hearken unto me if I give thee counsel?
CHR. If it be good, I will; for I stand in need of good counsel.
WORLD. I would advise thee, then, that thou with all speed get thyself rid of thy burden: for thou wilt never be settled in thy mind till then; nor canst thou enjoy the benefits of the blessing which God hath bestowed upon thee till then.
CHR. That is that which I seek for, even to be rid of this heavy burden; but get it off myself, I cannot; nor is there any man in our country that can take it off my shoulders; therefore am I going this way, as I told you, that I may be rid of my burden.
WORLD. Who bid you go this way to be rid of thy burden?
CHR. A man that appeared to me to be a very great and honourable person; his name, as I remember, is Evangelist.
WORLD. I beshrew him for his counsel! there is not a more dangerous and trouble some way in the world than is that unto which he hath directed thee; and that thou shalt find, if thou wilt be ruled by his counsel. Thou hast met with something, as I perceive already; for I see the dirt of the Slough of Despond is upon thee; but that slough is the beginning of the sorrows that do attend those that go on in that way. Hear me, I am older than thou; thou art like to meet with, on the way which thou goest, wearisomeness, painfulness, hunger, perils, nakedness, sword, lions, dragons, darkness, and, in a word, death, and what not! These things are certainly true, having been confirmed by many testimonies. And why should a man so carelessly cast away himself, by giving heed to a stranger?"
God bless.

I am reading "Love on the Dole" by Walter Greenwood. It is a bird's eye view of life in the '30's. If you think you are badly off now, read this and think you are a king. LOL

Yes I liked the Zeffirelli one too [two cassettes]. I have several versions and that ranks among the best of them both technically and storywise. Another good one is "Jesus the Christ" issued by Vanguard Videos. This one is not technically as good as the Zeffirelli one but is more comprehensive storywise. It runs to 6 cassettes [twelve episodes]. The Zeffirelli video will be re-released on February 17, 2004 [Amazon.Com] and is currently available from Amazon.co.uk [PAL version].

Hi all, I don't regret anything I have said about our "Roman Catholic friends." I was warned even as young as seven what to expect from them. Of course at that tender age I had no idea what it all meant since I had no idea what a Roman Catholic was. Indeed I actually wanted to make friends with them since I have a natural tendency to side with the "underdog." However, over the years the truth has slowly dawned. Apart from listening to EWTN (a Catholic radio station), I have never heard it firsthand before. I am deeply grateful to michael_legna for giving it to me straight from the hip. I will continue to try to be a good citizen to Catholics but I can say with honesty that I hate their dogma and I am as unlikely to accept it as I am to stand at the North pole.

Hi BEP, I read your reply. Ever since I became a Christian I have stoutly defended the position of Jesus Christ as saviour. All Christians have him at the head. However some Christians like to put a point of view and expect to get no replies opposing that view and they complain bitterly if they do. Well in our country we have a "right of reply." That means a right to put an opposite view. My point is that if one joins a denomination that broadly accepts one's own beliefs then there will be minimal need to oppose anything.
Simple as that.
