Bush Says The U.S. Will Come To Israel’s Aid

‘In the event of any attack on Israel, the United States will come to Israel’s aid’…

This is reassuring, especially being said on the same day that Iran tests a long range missle.

Iran conducted a test launch Tuesday night of the Shihab-3 intermediate-range ballistic missile, which is capable of reaching Israel and US targets in the region, Israel Radio reported. The test came hours before Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met with US President George W Bush in Washington to discuss the Iranian threat.

Military officials said it was not clear if this most recent test indicated an advance in the capabilities of the Shihab 3. They said the test was likely timed to coincide with the Washington summit and with comments made by Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah during celebrations in Beirut marking the 6th anniversary of Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

“What deters the enemy from launching an aggression is the resistance’s continuous readiness to respond,” Nasrallah told scores of supporters. “Northern Israel today is within the range of the resistance’s rockets. The ports, bases, factories and everything is within that range.”

The Shihab test was only “partly successful,” according to news reports. The nature of the difficulties was not clear. The Iranians have been working to extend the Shihab 3’s current maximum range of 1,300 kilometers. A year ago, they successfully tested a solid fuel motor for the missile.

Pamela at Atlass Shrugged reports what Bolton has to say.

She says:

It is painfully obvious that Iran wants us to strike first. They are goading. Why?

Olmert: Bush and I are in full agreement on how to confront Iran
By Aluf Benn and Shmuel Rosner, Haaretz Correspondent, Haaretz Service and Agencies

WASHINGTON - There is full agreement between Israel and the U.S. on how to confront the Iranian nuclear issue, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told Israeli journalists early Wednesday, hours after his White House meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush. (Click here for analysis by Aluf Benn)

"We extensively discussed the Iranian issue," Olmert said. "There is a full understanding between the president and myself on how to deal with this matter."

Olmert said he was "very satisfied" with the discussion he held with Bush on Iran.

Olmert said he believes Iran will cross "the technological threshold" on its path to nuclear capability in about a year.

Speaking earlier at a joint press conference with Bush following after an initial round of talks the two held as part of his first visit to Washington as prime minister, Olmert expressed concern over Iran's nuclear ambitions, insisting that it was not too late to prevent the Islamic republic's atomic program.

Olmert called Iran a threat to the entire Middle East. "This is a moment of truth. It is still not too late to prevent it from happening," he said.

Addressing the Iran nuclear issue, Bush told reporters that the aim to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons was "a common international goal."

"We determined that the Iranian regime must not obtain nuclear weapons," he said.

The president declared that the United States would "come to Israel's aid" in the event of an attack, an indirect reference to Iran, which Tuesday tested another long-range surface-to-surface "Shihab-3" missile. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last year called for Israel to be "wiped off the map," and in April called the country a "rotten, dried tree" that would be annihilated by "one storm."

Bush said that his administration was still pursuing a diplomatic solution to the issue. "Obviously we'd like to solve this issue peacefully and diplomatically, and the more the Iranians refuse to negotiate in good faith the more countries are beginning to realize that we must continue to work together," Bush said.

"We're spending a lot of time working with our Russian friends in particular to make it clear to them that Iran is showing no good faith," the president told reporters.

Russia and China, permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, have been reluctant to impose stronger measures, such as sanctions, on Iran. "We're on the cusp of going to the Security Council," Bush said.

Tuesday's Iranian missile test was viewed by Israeli and Western officials as an example of Iranian defiance of international efforts to halt its nuclear program and impose sanctions.

The "Shihab-3" has a known range of 1,300 kilometers and could reach any target in Israel. Iran is also in the process of developing longer-range missiles, intended to reach a distance of 5,000 miles.

Bush praises Olmert's 'bold ideas' for peace
Bush hailed Olmert's plans for Middle East peace as "bold ideas" that could prove to be an "important step" leading to a two-state solution, should the process outlined in the internationally brokered road map to Middle East peace falter.

"While any final status agreement will be only achieved on the basis of mutually-agreed changes... the prime minister's ideas could be an important step toward the peace we both support," Bush said with Olmert standing at his side.

Olmert, who placed his "convergence" plan for a unilateral withdrawal from the West Bank at the center of his recent election campaign, has said he plans to remove remote settlements in the West Bank, keeping larger enclaves forever and imposing a border unilaterally if peace efforts remain frozen.

Bush stressed, however, that a negotiated two-state solution remained the preferred route to peace. "I believe Prime Minister Olmert agrees that a negotiated final status agreement best serves the Israelis and the Palestinians and the cause of peace," he said.

'No country can make peace with those who deny its right to exist'
Bush also praised Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas as a leader who "speaks out for peace and negotiations," but criticized the Hamas-led Palestinian government, which he said does not seek peace. "No country can be expected to make peace with those who deny its right to exist, and who use terror to attack its population," he said.

"Hamas must recognize Israel's right to exist, must abandon terror and must accept all previous agreements between the Palestinian Authority and Israel," he added. "I assured the prime minister that our position is steady and strong - that Hamas must change."

Speaking after Bush, Olmert praised Abbas - referring to him as "president," not chairman as he has always done in the past - and said he would "exhaust" every possibility for peace. But, he added, if Israel discovered that negotiation was not possible, "we will be compelled to try a different route" - a clear reference to his plans for a unilateral withdrawal. Olmert also said he planned to complete his plans within three to four years.

While the Americans still hold out hopes that Abbas can deliver in negotiations, Olmert's comments on the Palestinian leader appear to be more a gesture to the Americans than the product of any real belief that Abbas has sufficient political clout to cut a deal with Israel. On Sunday, in an interview on CNN aired just 48 hours before his meeting with Bush, the Israeli leader referred to Abbas as a "powerless" and "helpless" leader.

If Hamas abandoned its refusal to recognize Israel and its embrace of violence, Olmert added, "they will find us a willing partner in peace." But he said Israel would not enter into an agreement with any party that refuses to recognize its right to exist. "We cannot wait indefinitely for the Palestinians to change," he said.

Olmert said that in a final status agreement, major population centers in the West Bank would be part of Israel. Asked about Olmert's assertion, Bush referred reporters to his April 2004 letter to then prime minister Ariel Sharon. In that letter, Bush wrote, "In light of new realities on the ground, including already existing major Israeli populations centers, it is unrealistic to expect that the outcome of final status negotiations will be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949."

Six to nine months
Olmert was quoted by Israel Radio on Tuesday as saying that he would be "willing to devote six to nine months to find a Palestinian partner" before turning to his unilateral plan.

On Monday night, Olmert met for dinner with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and U.S. National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley to prepare for his talks with Bush. Earlier Tuesday he held talks with U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

A series of secret talks between the U.S. and Israel is expected to follow Olmert's visit. During these talks, elements of the convergence plan will likely be honed and translated into a practical program.

U.S. State Department envoys David Welch and Elliott Abrams are to visit Israel at the beginning of June. Rice is also expected to travel to the region, and an additional meeting between Bush and Olmert is likely as well.

Bin Laden on the Move; New Sightings in Pakistan

Pakistani government sources tell ABC News they have "credible reports" that Osama bin Laden and his entourage have moved down from high mountainous peaks along the Afghan border to a valley area 40 miles inside the Pakistan border.

The officials say the reports put bin Laden around Kohistan's Kumrat Valley.

Officials said the reports were validated by the release of bin Laden's audio tape yesterday, which appears to have been recorded only two weeks earlier.

Such a quick turn-around suggests, say the officials, that bin Laden is much closer to civilization than he had been previously.

Previous audio and video tapes have taken four to six weeks to become public.

Hamas looking to fly planes into buildings
Terror leader details goal to carry out 9-11-style attacks, 'possibly against skyscraper'

JERUSALEM – Hamas is seeking the ability to attack Israel using small airplanes laden with explosives to be flown 9-11-style into important targets, possibly Tel Aviv skyscrapers, Abu Abdullah, a leader of Hamas' so-called military wing, told WorldNetDaily yesterday.

Abdullah is considered one of the most important operational members of Hamas' Izzedine al-Qassam Martyrs Brigades, Hamas' declared "resistance" department. He said his group would not immediately carry out airplane attacks, but that Hamas is preparing for the possibility should a long-term truce it claims to abide by falls apart.

Abdullah's statements come after Palestinian security officials told WND they believe Hamas recently smuggled into the Gaza Strip three small airplanes that can carry explosives and be used to attack Israel. They said information indicates the aircraft were purchased from eastern European dealers and that Hamas members received flight training from professionals in the Sudan, Iran and Syria.

Abdullah refused to confirm the reports, but said his group has the right to acquire aircraft.

"I cannot confirm whether this information is right or not but for sure it is one of our goals to have these airplanes," Abdullah said. "It is part of our legitimate arming in case the enemy [Israel] thinks to launch a big attack against our people."

Abdullah said Hamas would fly the planes into Jewish targets, possibly Tel Aviv skyscrapers.

"The goal is to have these planes carry maximum quantities of explosives and that they will be able to hit the targets that are fixed for its operation at a high level of accuracy. All the Zionist goals in our dear Palestine are legitimate. I estimate that this tool will not be used against regular targets. We will choose precious targets and I do not want to speak about strategic or any other targets. ... We know that the enemy is building new and high buildings in Tel Aviv."

The terror leader listed possible military targets, as well.

"[Our target] could be important military and civil buildings and compounds and it could also be settlements in 1948 occupied Palestine (Israel). We know that many of the decisions to kill our brothers are taken in the army headquarters in occupied Beer Sheva (considered the capital of the Israeli Negev desert). All these targets are legitimate ones," Abdullah said.

Abdullah would not specify whether the airplanes used in the attacks Hamas is seeking the ability to carry out would be piloted or flown by remote control.

He said Hamas is currently abiding by a truce with Israel it agreed to last February, but that at the same time his group was advancing its "resistance" capabilities for the eventuality the truce may fall apart.

"[Acquiring the airplanes] is part of the balance and the equilibrium with the enemy we have been working on these last years. It is not a secret that our military wing is very creative and works hard to improve its tools," Abdullah said.

Hamas the past few months has claimed many times its "military wing" functions separately from the group's political leadership.

Since Hamas was elected to Palestinian parliament in January, the terror group has refused to recognize Israel's right to exist. Some Hamas leaders have hinted at the possibility of negotiations. In a widely circulated report, Hamas Foreign Minister Mahmoud al-Zahar previously told WND his group would consider talking with the Jewish state through a third party. But Hamas leaders, including al-Zahar and the group's overall leader Khaled Meshaal, regularly declare they will not give up the right to "resistance."

Asked if the Hamas' political leadership sanctions the acquiring of aircraft for attacks, Abdullah replied, "The acquiring of any weapon is a decision of the military wing and it depends on a number of conditions related to financial facilities and to the situation on the ground. The Hamas political leadership starts to play a role only when it comes to the question of time – when to come back to the military operations because as you know we are respecting the ceasefire."

Israel says Hamas continues to direct attacks using other terror groups, particularly the Gaza-based Popular Resistance Committees. The Shin Bet Security Services recently announced Hamas senior member Ahmed Randor was responsible for a thwarted major bombing by the Committees at the Karni crossing, the main checkpoint between Israel and Gaza.

Hamas has previously been connected to foiled attacks using small airplanes.

Israel in the past has reportedly had numerous security alerts involving plots to fly aircraft into skyscrapers, including Tel Aviv's two Azrieli towers. Although the towers are shaped differently – one is triangular, another is circular – they are often referred to as Israel's Twin Towers.

In February 2003, six Hamas members were reportedly killed in a blast while filling a small aircraft with explosives. Security reports at the time said Hamas planned to fly the airplane by remote control into an Israeli target. Hamas leaders, including Abdullah, blamed Israel for the explosion that halted the aircraft attack.

In the past we succeeded to acquire one of these planes but the enemy discovered it and bombarded the plane killing our brothers who were working and training on the plane," Abdullah told WND.

Abdullah warned Hamas could easily resume its attacks.

"Any trial to launch a big attack against our lands and our people, any trial to remove our government from the power that we have achieved in a democratic way can motivate and accelerate the decision to use our new weapons. Once we are back in the operations, we are relatively independent to lead the struggle the way we see it."

Northeast rail resumes after power outage
Five commuter trains shut down inside Hudson River, Baltimore tunnels

NEWARK, N.J. - A major power outage stranded thousands of rush-hour commuters Thursday between New York and Washington, stopping trains inside sweltering tunnels and forcing many passengers to get out and walk.

Power was restored throughout the heavily traveled corridor at about 10:30 a.m. ET, more than two hours after outage, Amtrak said.

The outage stranded five trains in tunnels — one in Baltimore and four under the Hudson River heading into New York. They all been removed, Amtrak said.

Joe Piasecki of Washington Crossing, Pa. was among 100 passengers who climbed down out of a stalled train near Elizabeth, N.J. to walk nearly a mile to the nearest station.

“It’s a kind of eerie, end-of-the-world feel,” said Piasecki, who boarded the train in Trenton. “You have these two trains sitting here dead, not moving. You can’t see any cars or anything else moving.”

Bathroom ‘getting backed up’
Mike Kenny of West Windsor has been commuting to Manhattan for 30 years and said the outage was “shaping up as one of the worst ever.”

“It’s getting pretty hot in here, and the bathroom is getting backed up,” he said.

Train crews offered passengers the option of getting off and walking about a quarter-mile to the nearest station in North Elizabeth.

“I’ve got a bum foot, and I’m wearing a boot on it, but I’ll do it,” Kenny said. “I’m ready to call it quits and go home.”

Larry Willis, 63, of Upper Marlboro, Md., said he and other passengers were stuck in the dark for about 45 minutes in a Baltimore tunnel.

Passengers remained quiet during the outage but there was “a lot of frustration,” said Willis, who had been traveling to Newark, N.J., to catch a flight to Tel Aviv, Israel.

Birthday blessing?
Krista Barry spent the morning of her 23rd birthday sitting on the floor of a sweltering NJ Transit car, reading a book for more than 90 minutes.

“Everyone is calling me on my cell and saying, ’Uh, happy birthday; too bad you’re stuck,”’ said Barry, who boarded the train in Trenton bound for her job as an office temp in Manhattan. “At least I get to relax and not go to work.”

In New York, John McAlonan planned to catch an 8 a.m. Amtrak train from Penn Station to Philadelphia. He sat on the train for an hour but then gave up when it failed to leave the station.

“The lights went out three times and then they just stayed off,” McAlonan said.

Arctic refuge drilling to get new vote in House
Republicans advance Bush energy plan for Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

The House of Representatives is planning to this week vote yet again on opening Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.

Drilling in ANWR, a cornerstone of President Bush’s energy blueprint, is the only one of three Republican energy proposals that will come to a vote before lawmakers leave for a holiday recess at week’s end, Majority Leader John Boehner said Tuesday.

A vote on opening about 2,000 acres of ANWR to drilling was likely on Thursday, House aides said.

A proposal to give companies incentives to expand refining capacity will be delayed, and the fate of a bill requiring the administration to rethink vehicle fuel efficiency standards was unclear, Boehner told reporters.

In the Senate, Alaska’s two Republican lawmakers said they would continue to push to advance ANWR drilling.

Sen. Ted Stevens, chairman of the Commerce Committee, said ANWR drilling could be included in a package of energy legislation that Republicans are drafting for possible consideration this summer.

_________________________

This was just passed by the House today and forwarded on to the Senate. It is expected to have a more difficult time getting through the Senate but if it does by some chance get passed by the Senate it is also expected to be signed by the President.

JI training in chemical weapons

TERRORISTS linked to the group blamed for the Bali bombings are being trained in the use of chemical weapons that can cause widespread death and destruction.

Terrorism expert Rohan Gunaratna has warned that the authorities have proof Jemaah Islamiah has been training its operatives in chemical warfare.

Dr Gunaratna said authorities had recovered a training manual from the home of a senior JI leader instructing terrorists on how to develop and launch an attack with the deadly chemical, hydrogen cyanide.

"The chemicals and biological agents discussed in the manual were similar to those that al-Qa'ida had been experimenting with and producing in laboratories in Afghanistan," Dr Gunaratna said. "Al-Qa'ida has conducted experiments on dogs and rabbits exposing them to the fumes and forcing them to die harrowing deaths."

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty yesterday confirmed chemical warfare was an option that terrorist groups might consider, saying: "We do have to be prepared for biological and chemical attacks."

Speaking from Kuala Lumpur, where he was attending a meeting of regional police chiefs, Mr Keelty said groups such as JI had demonstrated their ability to quickly embrace new technology.

The AFP has been given $19.1million over five years to establish a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) data centre, which will be responsible for collating and co-ordinating the latest information on threats, strategies to combat them and sending the information to authorities in the region.

Mr Keelty yesterday signed an agreement with Malaysian police to work together to fight transnational crime, including terrorism. The AFP has already signed agreements with 10 other nations.

Mr Keelty said there was now an unprecedented level of co-operation between regional police agencies, which had put them in a much stronger position to fight terrorism.

Mr Keelty said yesterday one of the breakthroughs from this week's conference was the launch of a web-based criminal database linking member nations and the Interpol database. He said the database would allow authorities to track the movements of criminals and terrorists throughout the region.

Dr Gunaratna, also speaking from Kuala Lumpur yesterday where he was attending a cyber-terrorism conference, said the chemical weapons training manual had been seized during a raid on the home of JI leader Taufiq Rifqi in the southern Philippines.

The document has been analysed and translated by the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research's Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies. Dr Gunaratna said the manual was "rudimentary when compared to al-Qa'ida manuals but it demonstrated a clear intent of JI to develop chemical and biological weapons".

He said the interest of global jihad groups to manufacture, develop and use chemical and biological weapons such as hydrogen cyanide was growing significantly. Hydrogen cyanide is a widely used industrial chemical which in high doses is extremely toxic, causing laboured breathing, headaches, dizziness, hyperventilation, convulsions, heart attack and death.

Dr Gunaratna said JI had also been involved in training in al-Qa'ida's anthrax program in Afghanistan.

He said there had been past plans to move the anthrax laboratory from Afghanistan to Indonesia but the plans were thwarted by the "vigilance" of the Indonesian, Thai and Malaysian police and subsequent arrest in 2003 of JI operations chief Hambali.

Dr Gunaratna said jihadist groups around the world were keen to use chemical warfare and said governments should invest more in developing intelligence on these groups.

Marry or get out, US town tells unwed parents
May 23 9:20 PM US/Eastern

A small American town is facing accusations of seeking to drive unmarried couples with children out of town on grounds they do not fit the local definition of a family.

The brewing controversy in Black Jack, a town of 6,800 in the central state of Missouri, began unfolding earlier this year when Olivia Shelltrack and Fondray Loving were denied an occupancy permit after moving into a four-bedroom house they had purchased.

Local officials told the couple that the fact they were not married and had three children, one from Shelltrack's previous relationship, did not fit the town's definition of "family".

A Black Jack ordinance prohibits more than three people from living together in a single family home unless they are related by "blood, marriage or adoption".

The couple were then left with the option of getting married, packing their bags and leaving town, or putting up a fight, which is what they decided to do.

"I think the city wants to send a clear message that they don't want children born out of wedlock," Shelltrack told AFP in a phone interview. "It has become a moral issue for them.

"They see family in a certain way and that's the only acceptable way."

Shelltrack, 31, said she and Loving, her partner of 13 years, never imagined when they moved to Black Jack from Minnesota in January that a legal nightmare awaited them.

"We though the occupancy permit was a housing code issue, that an inspector would come by and check the house," Shelltrack said. "But we figured something was wrong when they asked for the children's birth certificates and a marriage certificate."

She said the family has received a lot of support from neighbors and local residents, many of whom are baffled by what they consider an archaic law.

Sheldon Stock, the town's attorney, told AFP there were no plans to evict the couple after the City Council earlier this month rejected a measure that would have changed the definition of a family to include unmarried couples with two or more children.

Nonetheless, he said, Shelltrack and Loving would have to abide by the law or face fines and a court battle.

"The city intends to enforce its ordinances and we think under the current state of the law that we have every right to do so," he said.

Stock noted that numerous other cities in Missouri have similar occupancy codes, but he acknowledged that the majority don't enforce them.

"Everybody in their occupancy codes has a definition of family," he said. "Somewhere you draw a line and unfortunately in this case they (Shelltrack and Loving) don't fall on the right side of the line."

The couple have taken their case to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which is considering filing a lawsuit against the city on their behalf.

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development is also conducting an investigation.

Anthony Rothert, the legal director for the ACLU in eastern Missouri, told AFP that some 10 unmarried couples with children had been denied occupancy permits in recent years in Black Jack and were essentially driven out of town.

One unmarried couple that owns a house in the mainly Catholic town and that recently had a second child is facing the same fate, Rothert said.

"I find this ordinance very bizarre," he said, adding that the city's argument that the law, adopted in 1985, was aimed at preventing overcrowding did not hold up.

"If Olivia and Fondray were married and had 20 kids they could live in the house," he said. "I think this is all about the city trying to impose its moral values on its citizens."

I can't post the link because of adertisment.

Judge says man too small for prison

Thu May 25, 4:56 PM ET

SIDNEY, Neb. - A judge said a 5-foot-1 man convicted of sexually assaulting a child was too small to survive in prison, and gave him 10 years of probation instead.

His crimes deserved a long sentence, District Judge Kristine Cecava said, but she worried that Richard W. Thompson, 50, would be especially imperiled by prison dangers.

"You are a sex offender, and you did it to a child," she said.

But, she said, "That doesn't make you a hunter. You do not fit in that category."

Thompson will be electronically monitored the first four months of his probation, and he was told to never be alone with someone under age 18 or date or live with a woman whose children were under 18. Cecava also ordered Thompson to get rid of his pornography.

He faces 30 days of jail each year of his probation unless he follows its conditions closely.

"I want control of you until I know you have integrated change into your life," the judge told Thompson. "I truly hope that my bet on you being OK out in society is not misplaced."

Brother, some people will read this story and think it is outrageous. But it really isn't outrageous, and many are completely unaware of recent history. Most states and maybe all had laws on the books up until recently that it was against the law for an unmarried man and woman to live together. In Oklahoma, it was called "Unlawful Cohabitation".

In fact, it might still be on the books in many states, even though it might be impossible to enforce in modern courts. The same is true for the criminal offense of "Adultery". Adultery was a felony in Oklahoma, but I don't think that law has been enforced since about 1970.

I just thought that some might find this to be interesting.

There are many such laws out there that are very old, and haven't been enforced in several decades, some are even out right silly one example is leaning against a public building is a crime, I don't remember the state or town, but you would be surprised at some of these laws. ACLU would be kept very busy trying to change these laws.
My children had a book on silly laws like this, a few years ago.

maybe we can find some laws that we can use against the ACLU  Grin Grin Grin Grin

Sister Maria,

You would probably be surprised about how many of those laws made some sense and dealt with some real problems. I'm thinking about an example regarding an ordinance that set requirements about how your horse had to be tied in the downtown area. It might still be on the books. If a horse got frightened and was able to get loose in an area with a lot of people, many people could become injured or even killed.

Cheesy  I'm going to guess that the "leaning against a public building" law had something to do with loitering. If you think about it, many criminals loiter in public places looking for a potential victim to pickpocket, snatch a purse, etc. So, some of those funny laws did have a purpose.

Love In Christ,
Tom

John 10:8-10 NASB  "All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. "I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Brother Tom, bear with me a moment please,  Grin Grin Grin Grin

I seem to recall that my daughter was reading to me from this book some of the laws and another one I rmember was one where if a husband wanted to beat his wife, he had to take her to the courthouse on a Sunday (can;t remember the hours) afternoon, but it was only for a couple of hours, and then he was allowed to beat her in public on the steps of the courthouse.   Grin Grin Grin Grin

If it was me I'd be out of town every Saturday and not come back until Monday, or maybe just not come back  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

maybe just not come back

That would probably be the better move. Otherwise you might get locked up in jail until Sunday.
