What Are You Worth?

You were bought at a price. 1 Corinthians 7:23  I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

This morning I have a package of baseball cards.  I wonder how much these cards are worth?  I didn't pay very much for them...only about fifteen cents each.  Did you know that some baseball cards can be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars?  How can that be?  They are just a picture on a piece of cardboard.  Well, some people collect baseball cards and if they want a particular card, and there aren't many of them, they may have to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to get one.  You see, these cards are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them.  If I am only willing to pay fifteen cents, then that is what they are worth.  If I am willing to pay thousands of dollars, then that is what they are worth.

How much are you worth?  If you take the skin and bones of our bodies, we are not worth very much.  But like these baseball cards, we are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for us.  Jesus must have thought we were worth a lot, because He was willing to pay a great price for us.  The Bible tells us that He died on the cross for us so that we could go to heaven to be with Him.  He paid for us with His life.  That is a tremendous price, isn't it?  Jesus must have thought we were worth a lot.

Lord, sometimes there are times when we don't feel like we are worth much.  In those times, help us to remember that Jesus thought we were worth dying for.

Three In One

Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live. 1 Corinthians 8:6 I and the Father are one. John 10:30 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. John 14:16

I'm sure that all of you know what I have brought with me this morning. It is a portable stereo, but most people call it a boom box. Do any of you have a boom box? As you can see, I only have one boom box, but it is really three players in one. Let me explain what I mean.

First, my boom box is a radio. I can turn it on, push this button, and I can listen to the radio. My boom box is also a CD player. I can put in a CD, push this button and I can listen to the CD. Finally, my boom box is a tape player. I can put a tape in in this slot, push the play button, and listen to the tape. I only have one boom box, but it is three boom boxes in one!

How many Gods are there? That's right! There is only one God, but God is like my boom box, He is one God in three persons! Let me explain what I mean.

First, there is God, the Father. The Bible says, "There is but one God, the Father, from whom all things come." That is why when Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he told them to pray, "Our Father, which art in heaven."

Second, God came down to earth in human form to die on the cross for our sins. Jesus is God in a human form. He said so himself when He said, "The Father and I are one."

Finally, when Jesus told His disciples that He was going to return to heaven, He told them that the Father would send them a comforter and teacher to be with them forever. That is why God sent us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God with us today.

Just as I have only one boom box that is three players in one, there is only one God, but He is God in three persons! Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Dear God, our Heavenly Father, our Savior, our Teacher, we praise you and worship you today. Amen.

Let the Games Begin!

Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.  They do it for a crown that will not last;  but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 1 Corinthians 9:25

This medal is a reminder of something very important that is happening right now.  Can you guess what it is?  That's right!  The Olympics.  Athletes from all over the world are in Australia competing in every kind of sport you can imagine.  Soccer, swimming, diving, gymnastics, track, tennis, bicycling and  many more.  These men and women in the Olympics train very hard in the hopes that they will win a medal.  In each event only one team or one person can win the top prize.  All of the athletes worked very hard, but there can only be one winner.

The Bible says that life is similar to games such as the Olympics.  The Bible says that everyone who competes in the games goes into very strict training and works very hard to win a prize.  Some people compete in the game of life for personal gain.  Perhaps they do it so that they can become famous, or be very popular, or to make a lot of money.  The Bible says that their prize will not last.  Some people compete in the game of life and work very hard because they love Jesus and want to bring honor to Him.  The Bible tells us that they win a prize that lasts forever.  In the Olympic games, there can only be one winner, but in the game of life, we can all be winners if we live for Jesus.

Lord, help us to play the game of life in such a way that we will bring honor to you.  Help us to remember that the victory comes from you -- not from ourselves.

In Remembrance of Me

The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me."  In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."  1 Corinthians 11:23-25

This morning I brought one of my family photo albums.  I love to look through my photo albums and remember all of the important people in my life and to think about all of the good times we have had.  I would like to share a few of those memories with you this morning.  This first picture is a picture of my mother when she was a young woman.  She was a beautiful woman and this picture helps me remember what she looked like when I was a little boy.  This is a picture of my daddy.  Daddy was very dark-skinned and had coal black hair.  As you can see, he had a wonderful smile that I think of when I remember my dad.  Here is a picture of my grandmother as a young woman, and then another taken just a few years before she went to be with Jesus in heaven.  These next pictures are pictures of my sisters.  And this one...wow!  What a beautiful baby.  Can you guess who that is?  It's me!  Here are a couple of pictures when I was in about the 4th or 5th grade, the same age as some of you.  Looking at these pictures sure brings back a lot of wonderful memories.

When Jesus went back to heaven to be with his Father, he left behind a picture for us to remember him by.  It isn't a picture in an album that we can look at and remember what Jesus looked like, but it is a picture to help us remember what Jesus did for us.  We call it "The Lord's Supper." (Communion)  Just before Jesus was crucified, he called his disciples together for a meal.  He took a piece of bread and he told the disciples that the bread was to remind them of his body that would be hung on a cross for them.  Then he took a glass of wine and told them that the wine was to be a reminder of his blood that would be shed for them on the cross.  He told them that whenever they ate the bread and drank the wine, it was to remind them of what he had done for them.  We still eat the bread and drink the wine today, and when we do, we do it to help us remember what Jesus has done for us.

Lord Jesus, thank you for giving us this picture to remind us of what you did for us when you died on the cross.  Help us to remember and be thankful.

We Will Remember

The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me."  In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 1Corinthians 23-26

I am sure that most of you have seen one of these ribbons.  Many people are wearing these red, white and blue ribbons right now as a way to help them to remember what happened on September 11, 2001.  These ribbons help us to remember the people who died in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania during terrorist attacks against our nation and it reminds us to pray for their friends and families.   It also reminds us to pray for those who are still working to clean up the sites of these terrible tragedies and recover the bodies of those who died there.  The ribbon also reminds us to pray for our nation and for our President as he leads us. This ribbon is a very special way to help us to remember what happened on September 11th.

Jesus has also given us a very special way to help us remember him and what he has done for us by his death on the cross.  On the night before Jesus was betrayed, he met together with his disciples for a final meal.  As he sat at the table with his disciples, Jesus took a piece of bread and broke it.  He said, "This is my body which is broken for you.  Eat this in remembrance of me."  Then he took a glass of wine and said, "This is my blood which is shed for you.  Drink it in remembrance of me."  We still use the bread and wine as a way to remember what Jesus did for us when he died on the cross.  The Bible also tells us that when we do this, we are telling others about Jesus' death.  Just as wearing a ribbon is a good way to tell others that we remember what happened on September 11th, the bread and wine are a good way to tell others about Jesus.

Dear Jesus, we pause today to remember the tragic events of September 11th and to pray for the families of those who died.  We also pause to remember your death on the cross which gives us life.

"The Savior's Happy Meal"

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

I'm sure that everyone here this morning will know what this is! That's right! It is a McDonald's Happy Meal. Have you ever had a Happy Meal? What's your favorite part of a Happy Meal? For most children, their favorite part of the Happy Meal is the toy. Let's look and see what kind of a toy we got in our Happy Meal. (Open the toy and show it to the children.)

I will have to be honest with you, I'm not too happy about the toy in this Happy Meal. It looks pretty cheap and I doubt that it will last very long. Even if it does last, it doesn't do much of anything and I'm sure it won't keep me happy for very long. I will admit that I was pretty happy about the fries, but as good as they were, when they were gone, I wasn't really satisfied. I still wanted more. That's the trouble with a McDonald's Happy Meal -- the happiness just doesn't last.

Did you know that our church has a happy meal? Well, we do -- and we are going to have a happy meal right here in this worship service this morning. This is what our happy meal looks like. It is a small piece of bread and a little glass of juice.

The bread represents the body of Jesus and the juice represents his blood. When we eat this Happy Meal, we are reminded that Jesus loved us so much that he died on the cross so that you and I could have everlasting life in heaven with him. Now, that is something to be happy about!

I have a poem that might help you to remember the meaning of our Happy Meal.

The Savior's Happy Meal

This Happy Meal doesn't look like much,
And it doesn't come with a toy.
It may not fill my stomach,
But it fills my heart with joy!
The bread and juice remind me of
The Savior's love for me;
When he died upon a rugged cross
On a hill called Calvary.
There is no way I can describe
The gratitude I feel
Each and every time I eat
The Savior's Happy Meal!

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for Jesus' death and resurrection. Thank you also for the Happy Meal we will eat today as a reminder of what Jesus has done for us. Amen.

God’s Toolbox

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.   There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.  There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. 1 Corinthians 12: 4-6

I have a tool box full of tools.  Why do you suppose I need so many tools?  It is because each of these tools has a different purpose.  There is no one tool that can do everything.  Here is a hammer.  If I need to drive in a nail, this is the tool I need.  If I needed to cut a piece of tin, this hammer just wouldn’t do, would it?  No, I would need these tin snips.  If I needed to put a screw into a piece of wood, these tin snips wouldn’t be of much help.  I would need this screwdriver.

The Church is like God’s tool box.  God has a lot of jobs to do and he has given the people in His Church different gifts and talents to help Him to do those jobs.  We are His tools!  To some he has given musical talent to help lead others in worship.  To some He has given the talent of teaching so that they can help others to learn more about Him.

If I needed to tighten a screw in my glasses, would this hammer help?  Would this great big screwdriver help?  No, I would need this little tiny screwdriver.  It doesn’t matter what your talent is and it doesn’t matter if you are big or small.  What does matter is that when God has a job for you to do, you need to be right there in His toolbox, ready and willing for Him to use you.

Lord, we thank you that you have given each of us special abilities to do things for you.  We pray that when you need us, we will be ready and willing to do what you need for us to do. Amen.

 That's What It's All About!

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
1 Corinthians 12:27 (NIV)

I am sure that all of you probably know the song and dance called "The Hokey Pokey." It goes like this:

You put your right hand in,
You put your right hand out.
You put your right hand in,
And you shake it all about.
    You do the Hokey Pokey
    And you turn yourself around,
    That's what it's all about.

After your right hand, you put your left hand in, then your right foot, then your left foot, then your head, until finally, you put your "whole self in!" What a fun song!

Can you imagine what would happen if you were doing the "Hokey Pokey" and the left hand refused to do the "Hokey Pokey" because it wanted to be the right foot?

What if the right foot said, "Since I am not the left hand, I am not part of the body so I refuse to do the 'Hokey Pokey?'"

The next thing you know, the head might say, "I don't need any of you, I can 'Hokey Pokey' all by myself!"

Oh, no! This can never be. The hands, the feet, the head...they are all part of the "whole self." You need them all to do the "Hokey Pokey." After all, like the song says, "That's what it's all about!"

Maybe this example of the "Hokey Pokey" seems a little bit silly, but it is a good picture of the church. The Bible teaches us that the church is the body of Christ and that it is made up of many members. Each member is different and each has been given different gifts.

Some have been given the gift of preaching and teaching while others have been given the gift of healing. Some people are good leaders and have been given the gift of seeing that everything runs smoothly while others may have been given the gift of helping others.

Just as God gave us hands, feet, head, eyes, and ears to meet the needs of the whole body, God has given the church different members with different gifts to meet the needs of the whole church.

And just like the song says, "That's what it's all about!"

Heavenly Father, we are thankful that you have given each of us special gifts. Help us to remember that each of us is an important part of the body of Christ. Amen.

 Are You on Target?

So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. 2 Corinthians 5: 9-10

As you can see, I have my bow and arrow with me this morning. I was watching TV the other day and I saw some archery events on the sports channel. I think I can do as well as they did. I am a pretty good shot. Just watch this! (shoot an arrow harmlessly off into an open area)

Hey, how about that! I am pretty good with this bow and arrow! How many of you thought that was a good shot? Well, actually, we can't tell whether that was a good shot or not, because I wasn't aiming at anything. What I need is this. (Hold up a target) The only way to know if I made a good shot is to have a target. If I hit the target, we will know it is a good shot. In an archery contest, the one who hits the target most often and hits the bull's-eye most often wins the gold medal.

A lot of people go through life without any goals or targets. They just wander aimlessly through life. How can they tell if they are successful unless they have a goal or target? The Bible tells us that we need to have a goal. It even tells us what that goal should be. It says that our goal should be to live a life that is pleasing to God. If we are successful and hit the target, the Bible says that we will receive a reward in heaven.

If you don't have a target to shoot at in your life, I hope that you will decide today to choose pleasing God to be your target.

Lord, sometimes we wander aimlessly through life without any goals or targets. Today, we choose pleasing You to be our goal. Help us to achieve that goal. Amen.

The Butterfly

In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." John 3:3 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17

One night a man named Nicodemus came to talk to Jesus. As Jesus was talking to him, he said something that Nicodemus didn't understand. He told Nicodemus, "No one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." Nicodemus was really puzzled by what Jesus said. He just couldn't understand how someone could be born again. To this day, a lot of people still have trouble understanding how that can be possible.

This morning I have brought something that might help us to understand what Jesus meant. I have brought a butterfly. Just look at my butterfly! Isn't it beautiful? I think the butterfly is one of the most beautiful things that God has ever created, but it wasn't always so beautiful.

As you probably know, the butterfly started out as a fuzzy little caterpillar. Now some people may think caterpillars are cute, some may think that they are funny, but probably no one would say that they are beautiful. A caterpillar is a worm -- and worms are not beautiful! Then, one day the caterpillar spins a cocoon about himself and stays there for several weeks. When it comes out, it is no longer a caterpillar, it has been miraculously changed into a beautiful butterfly.

God didn't just take a caterpillar and stick some wings on him and paint the wings all different colors. When the cocoon opens and the butterfly crawls out, it is a new creation. The caterpillar is gone! It has now become a butterfly.

That is a good picture of what Jesus meant when he said we had to be "born again." The Bible says, "if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" When we invite Jesus to come into our heart, we become a new creation. God doesn't just clean us up and slap on a little paint, he makes us into a new person. Would you rather be, a worm or a butterfly? Jesus will make you into a new creation if you will invite him into your heart.

Dear Lord, we thank you for sending Jesus to die on the cross so that we, like the butterfly, can become a new creation. We ask you to change us and to make us beautiful. Amen.

 Christ In Me

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

One day I had some work to do around the house so I went to the store and bought some work gloves. I don't know why they call them work gloves -- they don't do any work. Look at them...they are flat and lifeless. What do you think it will take to get these gloves to do any work? That's right! I have to put my hands inside the gloves. They won't do a thing until I put my hand inside them.

Once I put my hand in the work gloves, they can do all sorts of things. They can hammer nails, rake leaves, and hoe in the garden. They can open doors and lift and carry all kinds of heavy objects. As you know, of course, it isn't the gloves that are doing the work. It is my hands inside the gloves that are doing the work.

You know, that is the same way it is with being a Christian. The apostle Paul explained it this way, "I no longer live, but Christ lives in me."

Sometimes we may start thinking that we do some pretty great things. We may brag about how many people we have told about Jesus or we might tell everybody about how much work we do around the church. We might say, "Look at me. I do this and I do that, I, I, I..."

Ay! Ay! Ay! We have it all wrong! "It is not I, but Christ who lives in me."

The next time you start to thinking that you have done something great, remember the work gloves. They can do nothing without a hand inside. You and I can do nothing without Christ inside.

Dear Jesus, help us to remember that apart from you, we can do nothing. Amen.

 One in Christ

So you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have been made like him. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female. For you are all Christians--you are one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and now all the promises God gave to him belong to you. Galatians 3:26-29 (NLT)

This is a membership card to the Public Library. Do you have a library card? If you don't already have one, you should get one. One of the great things about a library card is that it is available to everyone. It doesn't matter if you are young or old. It doesn't matter if you are a boy or a girl. It doesn't matter if your skin is red, brown, yellow, black, or white. It doesn't matter where you were born or who your parents are. Everyone is welcome.

Another great thing about the library is that once you become a member, you are entitled to all of the benefits and services that the library provides. You can check out books and videos -- even music on a CD. You can go to the library and read magazines and newspapers. You can even use the computer.

Oh, by the way, do you know how much it costs to join the library? Nothing! Membership is free!

You know, that is a pretty good picture of what it is like to be a member of the Kingdom of God. The Bible tells us that when we trust in Jesus and are united with him in baptism, we all become the children of God. It doesn't matter if you are a boy or a girl. It doesn't matter what color your skin is. When we become a part of the Kingdom of God, we are all one in Christ Jesus.

The Bible also tells us that when you belong to the Kingdom through Christ Jesus, you are entitled to all the benefits of being a child of God. All of the promises that God has made in His Word belong to you! Isn't that great?

Oh, by the way, do you know how much it costs to become a part of the Kingdom of God? Nothing! It is a gift of God!

Dear Father, we are thankful that we can become your children through faith in Jesus Christ. We are thankful that it doesn't matter whether we are girl or boy -- black or white. We are thankful that in Christ we all become one. Amen.

 The Weightlifters

Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galations 6:2

One day last week I went to the gym to work out. There were a lot of other people down there working out too. Some of them were lifting weights. As I watched the weight lifters, I noticed that they always worked in pairs. One of them would lie down on the bench to lift the weights while the other would stand up near the lifter's head.

The person standing near the head is called a spotter. The spotter stands near the lifter's head just in case the lifter needs some help. Sometimes, the spotter didn't need to do anything at all. Just being there gave the lifter the confidence needed to lift the weights.

Other times, the spotter would call out words of encouragement to the lifter, saying, "You can do it! You can do it!" That encouragement was just what the lifter needed to lift the weights.

As more and more weight was added and the bar became really heavy, the lifter became very tired. When that happened, the spotter had to help the lifter by lifting the weight for him. Then, the two traded places and the spotter became the lifter and the lifter became the spotter.

I think that is a pretty good picture of what the Bible teaches us that we are to do for one another. The Bible tells us to "bear one another's burdens."  Sometimes we may have a friend who is going through some difficult times and needs someone to help carry their burden.  Maybe our friend is sick, sad, or lonely.

Many times, we don't even have to say anything or do anything. We just need to be there and let them know that we care.  Just knowing that we are there may be all they need to give them the courage to carry on.

Other times, our friend may need some words of encouragement. They may need for us to say, "You can do it! I believe in you! You can do it!" Those words of encouragement may be all they need.

Sometimes a person has a burden so heavy that they may need for us to lift that burden for them. Perhaps they have no money and need food or clothing.  We can lift their burden by giving them what they need.

Do you remember what the weight lifters did?  After one of them helped the other, then they traded places. The really beautiful part of what the Bible teaches about bearing one another's burdens is that sometimes we are the lifter and sometimes we are the spotter. We must be willing to give help to others as well as to receive it.

Dear Lord, just as Jesus loved us, help us to love one another and to bear one another's burdens.

The Tater Family

But the fruit of the Spirit is love,  joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.   Galatians 5:22-23

You know, a church is very much like a family.  Each member of the family is different and has his own special identity and his own personality.  This morning, we have a very special family with us to show us how each member of the family may be different and how members of our church family may be different too.  The family that I have with us this morning is the Tater family.  The Tater family is made up of a father named Dick Tater, a mother whose name is Sweet Tater, a teenaged son named Speck Tater, a daughter named Emma Tater and two children in the nursery .  They would be the Tater tots!

The father, Dick Tater always has to be the boss.  He always tells everyone what to do.  He wants to be chairman of the deacons, or at least the personnel committee.  If he can't be the boss, he won't even come to church at all.

The mother, Sweet Tater, always has something nice to say about everyone.  She never insists on having her own way and she would never get mad or get her feelings hurt if she didn't get her way.  She really shows what the Bible calls the fruit of the Spirit; love,  joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

The teenaged son, Speck Tater just doesn't want to get involved.  He doesn't want any jobs, he just wants to sit back and watch everyone else do the work.  Of course, if they don't do it to suit him, he will surely be the first to criticize and find fault.

The daughter, Emma Tater, is more worried about what she wears to church than she is about what happens at church.  It is very important to her that she is dressed in the latest style so that she won't be embarrassed.  She wants every one to notice that she is very "cool."

Well, that brings us to the Tater tots in the nursery.  I don't know how they will turn out, but they will probably look at  the other members of the family and decide that they want to be like one of them.  They might become a Dick Tater, a Sweet Tater, a Speck Tater, or an Emma Tater.  Let's hope that they make the right choice.

Dear Lord, as we choose the type of church family member we will be, help us to make the right choices.  Let us show the fruit of your Spirit in our lives.    Amen.

 The Greatest Gift of All

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8 (NIV) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (NIV)

Look at this beautifully wrapped package. As you can probably guess by the way it is wrapped, there is a gift inside. Do any of you like to receive gifts? Of course you do! I can't imagine anyone saying that they don't enjoy receiving a gift. If I were to give this package to you and ask you to give me five dollars, would it be a gift? No, if you have to pay for it or do something to receive it, it isn't a gift. When someone gives you a gift, it doesn't cost you anything. It doesn't come with any conditions. All you have to do is accept it. That's what makes it a gift.

What was the best gift you have ever received? Was it your first bicycle? Maybe it was an XBox 360® or a Sony Playstation®. For some of you it may have been a battery-operated remote control car or, for others, it might have been a favorite stuffed toy. In a group like this, we might have a lot of different ideas about what makes a great gift, but today I want to tell you about a gift that is, without question, the greatest gift ever given.

What is that gift? It is the gift of eternal life. It is the gift of God and it was given to anyone who wants to receive it. The Bible says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Whoever -- that's you and me. The greatest gift of all is for you and me.

When someone gives you a gift, it is never polite to ask, "How much did it cost?" But in this case, the Bible tells us how much God's gift cost -- and the cost was great. It cost God his only Son. Can you imagine how much God loved us to send his one and only Son to earth to die on a cross so that we could have eternal life? Can you imagine how much Jesus loved us to be willing to die on that cross so that we could have eternal life in heaven?

Eternal life -- what a gift! And all we have to do to receive it is believe and accept Jesus as our Savior.

Thank you, Father, for the greatest gift of all. Thank you for Jesus, who loved us so much that he paid the price for our sin to give us the gift of eternal life. Amen.
