Smokey's Testimony
The way I came to Christ is a long and winding tale. A shortened version follows. I was dragged to church as a kid, but we stopped going after my mom died when I was 11. God was fathful though. I remember being invited to vacation Bible school, at a neighborhood church and I had a friend in high school who was a Christian, and she invited me to a youth for Christ rally. It made me very uncomfortable. I asked God to forgive my sins one night after that, but told no one. I went away to college, and drifted away, the usual college stuff, drinking swearing and sex. Yet God was faithful. I kept bumping into Christians. In the dorm, the cafeteria, even in my fraternity! I received Christ as savior about 10 months after graduating from college when a co-worker shared with me on our lunch break at 3:00am one morning. I was working for a contract security company on the midnight shift at the time. That was in 1976. The man who shared with me was fired within a couple months, and I didn’t get much discipleship. It was just me and my pocket New Testament. But God was faithful, and seemingly out of the blue I got a call from a fraternity buddy who invited me to a Bible study at EMU. The funny thing is he didn’t know I had become a Christian! Of course I accepted! Through that study I found a church, and I was baptized in May of 1979. I have been an active member of Crossroads Community Baptist church since that time. I’ve taught adult Sunday school classes with the college students, single adults, and married adults, and I have served as a deacon for one 3 year term. I've been married for 14 wonderful years. My wife and I are currently active in the Choir, and occasionally teaching in our adult Sunday school class. We both work for the University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor.
