Dead sea scrolls published online

TWO thousand years after they were written and decades after they were found in desert caves, some of the world-famous Dead Sea Scrolls went online for the first time on Monday 26 Sept 2011 in a project launched by Israel's national museum and web giant Google.

The scrolls include the biblical Book of Isaiah, the manuscript known as the Temple Scroll, and three others. Web surfers can search high-resolution images of the scrolls for specific passages, zoom in and out, and translate verses into English.

The originals are kept in a secured vault in a Jerusalem building constructed specifically to house the scrolls. Access requires at least three different keys, a magnetic card and a secret code.

The five scrolls are among those purchased by Israeli researchers between 1947 and 1967 from antiquities dealers, having first been found by Bedouin shepherds in the Juddvean Desert.

The scrolls, considered by many to be the most significant archaeological find of the 20th century, are thought to have been written or collected by an ascetic Jewish sect that fled Jerusalem for the desert 2000 years ago and settled at Qumran, on the banks of the Dead Sea.

The hundreds of manuscripts that survived, partially or in full, in caves near the site, have shed light on the development of the Hebrew Bible and the origins of Christianity.

The most complete scrolls are held by the Israel Museum, with more pieces and smaller fragments found in other institutions and private collections.

Tens of thousands of fragments from 900 Dead Sea manuscripts are held by the Israel Antiquities Authority, which has begun its own project to put them online in conjunction with Google.

That project, aimed chiefly at scholars, is set to be complete by 2016, at which point nearly all of the scrolls will be available on the internet.

The Digital Dead Sea Scrolls can be seen at the following web site:

"A New Testament professor is setting the world of Bible scholarship on fire with his claim that newly discovered fragments of early Christian writings could include a first-century version of the Gospel of Mark, from the same century in which Jesus and the apostles lived."

RECENT ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERIES IN ISRAEL PERTAIN TO KING DAVID, JESUS

Aug 17, 05 | 4:55 pm

Working a short distance from each other near Jerusalem's Old City, archaeologists have made two major discoveries in recent months, one pertaining to King David and the other to Jesus.

Israeli archaeologist Eilat Mazor has uncovered what may be the 3,000-year-old foundation walls of the palace of the biblical King David in the area known as the City of David.

The foundations for the monumental building are large boulders. Its walls are more than six feet thick and extend at least 98 feet. Also found at the site were a governmental seal of an official named Jehucal or Jucal, who is mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah, and numerous shards of Iron Age II pottery dating from the 10th to 9th centuries, corresponding to the time of David and Solomon.

The find has sparked a lively debate among archaeologists about whether the structure is actually the palace of the fabled Jewish king. If true, it "could turn out to be the archaeological find of the century," according to the Jerusalem Post. But in any case, all agree that it is a rare and important major public building from a period that has been under-represented in the archaeological record.
"This is a very significant discovery, given that Jerusalem as the capital of the united kingdom [Jewish] is very much unknown," said Gabriel Barkay, an archaeologist from Israel's Bar-Ilan University. "This is one of the first greetings we have from the Jerusalem of David and Solomon, a period which has played a kind of hide-and-seek with archaeologists for the last century."

This is a very old post, but yet it is still alive. This information in this post is errant. The original city of David (the fortress Zion) was totally destroyed in the second century BC by Simon the Hasmonian. Mr Mazor needs to read Josephus. Some buildings were moved to the NEW city of David located to the west of the old city of David. The fact is that David never lived in the new city of David. It's sad today that even science has become politicised. You don't know who to trust anymore - global warming, temple location to name two current "scientific" falsehoods.

I didn't look up the original post, but I did quote from your post. Did you see a reference in the article about an old or new City of David? If not, the article would be correct, right?

Have archaeologists found home of Bible's Elisha?
Pottery shard dated to the 9th century B.C. with prophet's name

Archaeologists in Israel say they may have discovered the home of the Old Testament prophet Elisha.

A pottery shard with his name on it has been dated to about the ninth century B.C., which would be about the time he lived, researchers say.

“You know I cannot say for sure this particular Elisha that we found is the biblical Elisha,” archaeologist Ami Mazar told CBN Jerusalem bureau reporters Chris Mitchell and Julie Stahl.

“You know it’s very difficult to say, but it is very tempting because it is exactly the period when Elisha acted – the second half of the ninth century B.C.”

CBN reported the pottery piece was found in a novel house uncovered in Tel Rehov in the Jordan Valley. Elisha was born in Avel Mehola, only about seven miles from Tel Rehov.

Get the complete 13-part cable network series that asks the powerful question: Is Israel a place of miracles?

The report said the research, which has been going on for more than a decade, uncovered a 3,000-year-old “well-planned” city.

There, a unique structure was uncovered, with two wings “connected to one another through the back room and each one of the wings had an opening to the street,” Mazar said.

Inside was a special room with a table and a bench. A pottery shard bore the name Elisha, CBN reported.

The news organization said archaeologist Stephen Pfann suggested the possibility it was the prophet were reasonable.

“With only six other people by the name of Elisha known in that time for a couple of centuries on either side, we can somehow believe that either there was just the luck that this holy man was also by the name of Elisha, or this was Elisha the prophet himself,” Pfann told CBN.

The report said also found on site were two inscriptions mentioning the family of Nimshi.

Pfann told CBN: “We remember that it was Elijah who was told to anoint Jehu, the son of Nimshi, to be the king. … And he passed that on to Elisha who sent out one of his disciples to finally do the anointing.”

Cary Summers, head of Nazareth Village, said there will be doubters.

“There is always the skeptic who says, ‘Show me the proof,’” Summers told CBN.

He pointed to the tile with the name and the excavation itself as “one more proof for what we call the doubting world.”

There is more and more archaeological evidence appearing by the day to validate Biblical truth. The Gospel of Mark written before 90 AD discovered in Egyptian mask.

The ancient city of Sodom, which the Bible says was destroyed by God for its wickedness, may have been found according to a team of American archaeologists.

Popular Archaeology reports a 10-year dig headed by Steven Collins of New Mexico’s Trinity Southwest University “has unearthed a goldmine of ancient monumental structures and artifacts that are revealing a massive Bronze Age city-state that dominated the region of Jordan’s southern Jordan Valley, even during a time when many other great cities of the ‘Holy Land’ region were either abandoned or in serious decline.”

The site on the northeastern side of Israel’s Dead Sea is known as Tall el-Hammam.

More hard evidence that the Bible is true. Thanks for posting this.
