Brother, your friend is completely correct. The USS Abraham Lincoln will do a tour there and provide all kinds of support for relief efforts. My son tells me the sailors on that ship feel really good about trying to help in any way that they can. My son is on the Nimitz, and the Nimitz will replace the Abraham Lincoln when their tour is over. Many people never hear about all of the good things our armed forces are doing to help people all over the world. It's just another reminder to pray for our troops all over the world. I saw some interviews with soldiers who I guess are called combat engineers now. They used to call them construction battalions in WWII. They are building infrastructure for clean water, sewage, schools, homes, and repairing many other structures. It makes me proud to know that those fine young men and women will work tirelessly to help, and they will also help many other relief organizations get to where they are needed, transport supplies, food, medicine, clothing, blankets, and the many other things that are desperately needed right now. Many folks don't have a clue that our armed forces do so many good things for so many people in need.

You are so right BEP. Our Military does not get the recognition that they deserve for the good work that they do.

The 7th Fleet consists of a whole group of ships that operate in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Currently the USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Nimitz and the USS Shoup are among those the 7th Fleet. The USS Shoup is accompanying the USS Abraham Lincoln to the area along with two air wings, a Marine Det and I heard "rumors" that the SeaBee's are also going (Navy Construction Unit).



7th Fleet Units Help in Relief Operations in Southeast Asia

YOKOSUKA, Japan - As directed by U.S. Pacific Command, Commander U.S. 7th Fleet is preparing to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to the governments of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and other affected nations to mitigate the effects of the recent earthquakes and tsunamis.

According to Lt. Gilbert Gay, 7th Fleet Task Force 72 (CTF 72) public affairs officer, six P-3C Orion surveillance aircraft from Patrol Squadron (VP) 8 and elements of VP-4, based at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, have been deployed to take part in a survey operation in the area, operating out of Utapao, Thailand. Approximately 110 personnel are involved in the operation.

"The P-3's long range and long loiter time capability is an invaluable asset for search and rescue operations as it can view a large area and rapidly provide that information to regional Rescue Coordination Centers," said Gay. "While not able to physically rescue a survivor from the water, the P-3's communications suite and abilities to stay on station, survey for long periods of time and deploy life rafts in the vicinity of any survivors make it an important component of any search and rescue operation."

Humanitarian assistance assessment teams from U.S. Pacific Command are expected to be deployed to identify requirements for temporary military-specific support that can be provided to the governments affected by this disaster.

The U.S. Navy is well equipped and trained for these situations. Because of that, when called upon, units have the capabilities to deliver assistance to areas of the world that need it.

U.S. Sailors Donate Essentials in Wake of Tsunami

MANAMA, Bahrain - Sailors forward deployed to Naval Support Activity (NSA), Bahrain, supported a relief drive Dec. 29-30 for survivors of the massive tsunami that struck Southeast Asia early this week.

More than two tons of donations poured in from men and women in uniform, and from local nationals employed on the base. The aid consisted mostly of essentials: bottled water, food, clothes and toiletries.

The goods are to be transported to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, via truck where the cargo will then be flown to Colombo, Sri Lanka, for distribution to those in need.

"I donated some canned goods, some dry goods and cereal, stuff I know people can benefit from," said Information Systems Technician 2nd Class (SW) Ann-Marie Leach from Montego Bay, Jamaica. "From what I have seen on the news, my heart goes out to them because if I were in a situation like that, I would want some help too. So I think it is a great cause, and I would encourage everybody to try and get involved and participate in this relief effort because the human toll has been very high and people are going to need help for a long time."

"When you hear about the sheer devastation in these countries, and find out children are a large part of the victims, it is really a sad thing," said Cryptologic Technician Collection 1st Class (SW/AW) Bryan Hawkins from Port Arthur, Texas. "I brought in some clothes and some canned goods with flip-top lids so you can just pop them open and eat them right there if you had to."

Bahrain is approximately 2,300 miles from Sri Lanka's capital city. The air carrier DHL donated the space to fly the aid to Sri Lanka.

"One of the nice things about this effort is we were supported from all elements of the base from service members, to civilians, to third country nationals working here on the base," said Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) Special Agent Greg Harris from NCIS's Middle East field office. "The support has been excellent, and we want to say thank you to everyone who participated."

The Dec. 26 tsunami has so far claimed the lives of more than 20,000 people in Sri Lanka and there are still many more believed to be missing. Main coastal highways in the country have been rendered impassable making the relief effort more difficult.

I'm sorry to hear you got bit by a rat terrier. It sounds like it wasn't trained properly. My little rat terrier hasn't bitten anyone. He just licks them to death. Buster is his name and as I said he is my helper. He fetches things for me that I can't reach, turns ceiling lights on and off for me. If I fall asleep at night before turning the TV off he even does that before he jumps into bed next to me.

Hi, Freak, and welcome to the forum! I'm also 20, female. I work with horses and write stories. I live with my parents and sister; we've got a mini-farm, with goats and chickens and rabbits and a dog (they're hiding from the snow!), and we've got a cat and two birds indoors. (And some fish. Do goldfish count as pets?   )

I had a friend that owned a wolf and a half-wolf pup...they were gentle giants, but they scared me anyway...

Brother, it sounds like your dog has it almost as rough as mine do. I have one 14 and one 13, and they have loved me unconditionally all of their lives. They've also been my companions during times of illness, but they don't know how to do anything to help me except love me. In return, I will love them and take care of them in the most humane way for the rest of their lives. They both just interrupted me to be petted.
