The definition of the word 'custom' " a usual practice, habit. social convention carried on by tradition."
Are you saying that we should be dressing as they did in the early church? Are women in your church braiding their hair? that is forbbiden if we were to follow your interpretation .
Blessings,
bluelake
What verse 16 is saying is that they had
NO
custom that defined a requirement for the length of hair. That he (Paul) really was not concerned with such a trivial matter as length of hair. His main concern in this letter (chapters 10 and 11) to the Corinths was the women in the church that were acting like the pagan priestesses and prophetesses (acting like men) and was telling them not to follow that example.
So that leaves us with 1 Tim 2:9 and 1 Pet 3:3.
First lets look at 1 Tim 2:9.
Here it is telling them their place in the church and how to go about properly conducting that position. Being "modest" in appearance is just a part of that. Modesty here is in comparison to women of that time and in that area that were putting their hair in real fancy broids way high on their heads (called beehives, if I remember right). Modest apparel was not saying that women have to wear dull looking clothes such as straight black or gray dresses. To be modest here is saying to be properly covered and not to wear all kinds of gold and pearls or other such adornment. Simple ear rings or a wedding ring, perhaps a simple necklace, not outlandish but simple. This was in comparison to those women there that wore jewelry in their hair, a dozen neclaces, a ring on every finger and such all over their dresses.
Does this mean that women cannot put their hair in a simple twirl on top of their head or a simple bun? Not at all as it is a simple, modest hair style.
1 Pet 3:3
Here the main idea behind this chapter is the relationship of a man to a woman and woman to the man. That the woman should be more concerned with having her heart right (the inward adorning) toward God and toward her husband than to spend a lot of time on the outward adorning.
People that take these verses as a single verse and not read the whole chapter, very frequently misunderstand the intent of them. One must read the entire subject to get the proper message being relayed.

ROFL
I have extremely long hair, but I only have 1 hair on my head. I usually just wind it up in a stylish bun.

Bronzesnake,
Brother John, your picture looks great, but you actually look better in person. I would suggest a better photographer.
Forget about the hair cut -
YOU LOOK COOL!

Tom

1Cor.11:1-16? The long and short of it is you must look for the who what when where and why to have any true understanding of what you are reading. This passage is not about HAIR.
Shylynne,
Yes, I'm am aware of the passage we are discussing. I also added 1Pet. and 1Tim.which forbid the braiding of the hair. However, if you read these passages carefully you will find that it doesn't forbid the wearing of jewlery or braiding hair,or
expensive clothes. What it does say is that a gentle and quiet
spirit
is more pleasing to God than our outward appearance.
Some Pentecostal churches have dress codes that they make
mandatory to their members, even though the Bible doesn't require that it is necessary.
God bless you,
bluelake

When the bible talks about looking at nature to see if it is shameful for man to have long hair. I think it speaks for itself, we can look at nature and its creatures and see the difference between a male and a female. Man has a look that is different than that of a woman. I don’t know about you but I have seen some very pretty men, they look like woman. This is why the hair of a woman was given to her for her glory. We as man see woman with long hair and it is beautiful. Why would a man want to wear their hair in a way that is suitable for a woman, and vise versa. Nature tells us that it is shameful for a man walking around looking like a woman. Because it is the hair of a woman that makes her look like a woman. It does not make her more Holier than another woman just because her hair is longer. I thank the nature thing goes much deeper especially in this day in age.
