We have a pet spider. A black widow. She's lovely as she floats in the alcohol!  Grin

My bro had a pet black widow. A live one. She died about a month ago . . . I still hate spiders, though. Scorpions rule!

Shocked I'm SO SORRY!!!! How could I have possibly forgotten? I mean, I've been quite "attached" to a number of ticks in my lifetime.  Grin Cool Tongue

He-he-he-he-he - you're killing me, here!  Cheesy
It's not so much that I love ticks, it's that they have so much affection for us!  Especially our pets!

Plus - they are soooo cute when they are full!  Grin

I admit it! I'm prejudiced! I don't like ticks!  Undecided

But maybe if they were in alcohol, I'd like them more!  Grin

All creepy leggy things are arachnids, to me...

My favorite is the Giant African Hissing Beetle. Its about 3 or 4 inches long, and its sometimes called a cockroach, but its actually more of a beetle. Its abdomen is full of air tunnels, and it "talks" by swelling with air and exhaling so that those tunnels hiss. For a bug, its kind of cute. (Mine liked chocolate and pizza, didn't seem to care much for the veggies I was supposed to feed him.)

In Northern California we have Jerusalem Crickets.  Probably the biggest bug I know of in California - as long as the biggest scorpion but lots heavier. (FYI - for some perspective, the one in the picture is just about actual life-size.)

Some are large enough to walk with a leash!  Real “meaty” also – I suppose if you had to, one could sustain life by eating Jerusalem crickets and dandelion leaves.
Mmmm - good!

Well, as usual I can't see the pcture, but I believe what you are referring to are the same things that we called "Children of the Earth" in New Mexico. If so, YES, they are very big! And very scary, too! (if you haven't noticed, I'm afraid of just about every bug and archind other than scorpions. Tongue)

YoYo, Your lack of viewing capabilities must be a real hinderance - I guess maybe you know (to a very small extent) what it must be like being blind when someone says "Oh! Look how blue the sky is today!"

To confirm we are talking the same six-legged critter, you can use Google.  Google has an option to search images.  Click [Images] and for search words use 'Jerusalem Crickets'

Good luck!

Nope, sorry. My internet connection won't let me into Google images.   UndecidedTongue

Willowbirch,
I looked at your two websites, and miraculously I was allowed to get into the second one. It definitely does mention "Children of the Earth" but the legs looked too small. So, I asked my older brother and he informed me that the name "Children of the Earth" was originally applied to Jerusalem Crickets but has now been relocated to solpugids (or solifugids) which is what I was thinking of.

Hopefully that clears everything up.

The air is not clear yet.
Now I want to know who thought up a word like "sulpogid"? Do entymologists ever laugh at themselves?
