I never was much for larger game (deer, moose, elk, bear, etc.) but I always enjoyed bird hunting.  I also enjoy fishing (which is a form of hunting, right???).

Basic rule my father taught me: never "harvest" anything you aren't going to eat - doesn't matter if it is a potato or a rabbit.

Is it a sport?  I suppose that depends on how seriously you take it.  If you stay in super good condition to hike ten miles, harvest a dear and carry it back before the meat spoils, then it is a definite a sport.  For the kind of hunting I enjoy (a leisurely stroll in the Sierra foothills followed by a feast of quail) – nope not a sport.  More like ‘shopping’.  Grin

We're a family of hunters! 'Cept for me these days... Embarrassed I just get to cook and eat!  Wink

When the freezer is full, the hunting is done for the season. None is wasted! The kids take turns going out with my husband and they come back TIRED! Lots of walking... They've all learned so much about animals. What's been where by the tracks, rubbings, and droppings Lips Sealed. Re-loading and math.... FPS, grams, etc. Too much for me!

My husband was walking back with the oldest daughter one evening. It was almost completely dark. I saw them coming up and said that I thought it was really cool that a teen girl was coming out of the woods at dark and wasn't the least bit fearful. My husband said; "She's a blonde with a gun, why should she be afraid?"  Grin

A sport? Yes! Lots of hiking through varied terrain. And those deer stands have rungs to climb!  Grin

Someday (I'm dreaming, don't worry) I'm going to go to Africa and hunt Kudu and Gemsbok and Cape Buffalo (maybe). But first I have to get a big grizzly, and a moose, of course, and a caribou . . . somebody stop me, I'm drooling.  Grin Cool Tongue

So there's only armchair quarterbacks around here? What has happened to the hunters? Did the grocery stores kill them off?  Grin

Beef, pig, buffalo, goat (well – lamb), ostrich, turkey, duck, goose, salmon, halibut, trout – Safeway DOES seem to do most of the hunting and fishing now days…I guess if they sold a good quail I’d have no reason to hunt at all!  If they had good striped bass, large mouth bass, crappie and sturgeon I could give up fishing, too!
 Grin

But, then - what would I do with my boat and my shotgun?  Undecided

Hm.  I guess I'd develop a taste for meadow lark and carp.  Grin

My late daddy used to take me hunting in Northern,California where I was born.  Also to the Black Hills of Wyoming every winter from the 1960s to the 1970s.

I still like deer meat, it's much leaner than beef is. I have eaten Elk, Moose, and many others. My daddy was an avid outdoorsman!

JudgeNot, It's a good thing you don't live here..... we have a local grocer that DOES sell quail! Lips Sealed You'd have no reason to hunt!  Cry
Course my husband says it tastes better when you follow the 'do-it-yourself' way!  Grin

But, then - what would I do with my boat and my shotgun?
Now that would be a huge problem!  Wink

I know a guy who said the best thing he's ever eaten is turtle stew. Doesn't make for a very challenging hunt, though.  Tongue
