THE TEMPERATE TEEN
By Sarah Dowell
"Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." I Tim. 4:1212

When I think about obedience, I always remember a poem my mother read to me many times when I was young. It told wonderful things about children who loved to obey. They all lived in a town called Happy-ville. It contrasted their smiles with frowns on the children who lived in Grumpy-town, where everyone was sad and mad. This favorite nursery rhyme lingers still in my mind and often chides me when I'm in a grouchy mood.
Did you realize that you make your parents happy when you obey? Col. 3:20 says, "Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. " God tells you to submit regardless of your circumstances. No matter what situation occurs, your responsibility is to yield your will, your actions, and your thoughts to the authority of your parents. "Children, obey your in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth" Eph. 6:1-3. To honour means to reverence. To reverence means to have fear mingled with respect and affection. It is a bow of courtesy. It makes God happy when you comply to your parents' wishes with agreeable attitude.
Even though it is good to do good, "to obey is better than sacrifice .... For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry" 1 Sam.15:22-23. I hope you do not "back-talk" or "bad-mouth" when you're told to do something you don't want to do. All these scriptures admonish and encourage us to do the right thing. If we fill our mind with the word of God, obedience will be much easier. Then we can move out of Grumpy-town and live in Happy-ville!
