Looks like I'm gonna make a climbing wall! Maybe some resin holds, or some people say they make them out of Bondo and they're reasonably durable. Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait...WooHoo!

Hmmm. Latest ponderance: What's the line between managing risk and tempting God? Not to get close to the line, but I suppose it's better stated, "What is the difference between the two?"
Any opinions?

Oklahoma Howdy to Whitehorse,
Several of my friends have a portable one they set up in the mall and charge to use. They use a safety tether from the top, and a person on the ground is responsible for holding the other end of the rope and stopping a fall. With the right gear, I doubt you would need the person on the ground. The climber would continually adjust the safety tether with one end on their belt. I think that minimal safety equipment would just about eliminate serious injuries and death.
I do the same type of climbing that Brother Love does, in and out of bed.
So far, I don't need a safety tether for that.
In Christ,
Tom

Those are fun. That's neat that they have their own! Everybody loves those things. Self-belay is never a bad bet if they know how to use the belay device right, and if the insurance company will let them. I'd prefer it, actually.
Glad to hear you don't need a rope yet-I think I just might!

Good question. 'Sorry I missed this from months ago.
"...managing risk...". Hmmm.
My first reaction to this is, "What's the point?"
I.e., What's the point of doing something if it's about "managing risk"?
Which begs the next question, "What's the point of going climbing?"
Which then begs the next question, "What's the point of doing anything at all?"
The answer is, there is no point to doing anything--OR, perhaps, that IS the whole point--that our world is subjected in futility and that ultimately there is no point to doing anything. THat IS the whole point--that everything we do is pointless.
But to get back to your question, "managing risk" is in other words doing things in such a way as not to tempt God--like Evil Knievel across the Grand Canyon.
In a way, this is the "pioneer spirit". Why be a pioneer?
Isn't being a "pioneer" tempting God?
No, becuase, again, if you are going about it as "led by the Spirit", it's not about "managing risk".
What about those two nature lovers from Malibu last Fall getting mauled and killed by Grizzlies, up there in
Alaska, after deliberatgely putting themselves, at risk, in that situation?
But then, on the other hand, what about Christian missionaries deliberately and knowingly putting themselves at genuine risk?

Managing risk means having adventure without being nuts about it. That, in a nutshell.
