IN BRIEF

So Demos Are Outraged About Presidential Promises to Foreign Leaders?11

Recall this infamous hot-mic assurance12 from Barack Obama to then-Russian President Dmitri Medvedev that he would surrender NATO’s plans for anti-ballistic missile defense in Poland: “On all these issues, but particularly missile defense … this can be solved, but it’s important for [incoming Russian President Vladimir Putin] to give me space. This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.” The mainstream media treated it with little more than a ho hum of a shrug and moved on. After all, it was an election year and Obama was their preferred candidate. Never mind the fact that Obama was colluding about U.S. defense systems with the leader of one of our biggest geopolitical foes, Russia.

Fast-forward to Wednesday when The Washington Post reported that an intelligence officer filed a whistleblower complaint against President Donald Trump alleging that he had made a “promise” to a foreign official that was “troubling.” Just who the foreign official was and what was promised is not known. However, it may be that the foreign official in question was Ukraine’s new president, Volodymyr Zelensky, who Trump had a phone conversation with two and a half weeks prior to the whistleblower complaint.

Much of the mainstream media speculate’s that Trump was seeking to press Ukraine’s president into reinitiating a sidelined investigation into alleged illegal activity by Hunter Biden, son of Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden. This speculation seemed to gain legitimacy after Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani commented on social media, “A President telling a Pres-elect of a well known corrupt country he better investigate corruption that affects US is doing his job. Maybe if Obama did that the Biden Family wouldn’t have bilked millions from Ukraine and billions from China; being covered up by a Corrupt Media.”

The Leftmedia contends that Trump may be in hot water because of a possible quid pro quo with a foreign government to help him dig up dirt on a political opponent. That’s a serious charge, but the truth is that even this accusation pales in comparison to Obama’s promise to Medvedev. It’s also nothing compared to Hillary Clinton’s hiring of Fusion GPS to fabricate dirt on Trump, which then served to launch the biggest political scandal in our nation’s history — the whole Trump/Russia collusion hoax and the attempted intelligence coup13 against a sitting president. And yet it will be treated by Democrats and the Leftmedia as a massive scandal.

Will Trump Accept O'Rourke’s Gun-Ban Gift?14

The Trump administration is getting a lot of pushback15 from Liberty16- and Second Amendment17-advocacy groups regarding proposed broader and more enhanced background checks for firearm purchases. While most Americans believe all firearm purchasers should be qualified, there is a very legitimate concern that implementing background checks for any firearm transfer under any circumstance will lead to a national firearm registry.

But Trump was given a gift by Beto O'Rourke when the latter used the Demo debate stage18 to expose the Democrats’ long-range gun-confiscation19 objective.

When asked, “Are you proposing taking away their guns and how would this work?” O'Rourke responded, “Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47!” Even Demo Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer declared, “I don’t know of any other Democrat who agrees with Beto O'Rourke.”

Trump responded, “Dummy Beto made it much harder to make a deal. Convinced many that Dems just want to take your guns away. Will continue forward!”

O'Rourke just provided Trump an “easy out.” He has an opportunity to declare that O'Rourke has poisoned the debate and that no “sensible” (as Democrats insist) policy discussion is possible now given O'Rourke’s comments. Trump can kill two birds with one stone — taking down O'Rourke by blaming him for killing further policy discussion at this time.

Will he take O'Rourke’s gun-ban gift?

Colt Stumbles Into Civilian Rifle Suspension20

In a confusing public statement21, Colt Arms announced that it is suspending production of rifles for the civilian market, including the popular AR-15. According to Colt’s CEO Dennis Veilleux:

We want to assure you that Colt is committed to the Second Amendment, highly values its customers and continues to manufacture the world’s finest quality firearms for the consumer market. The fact of the matter is that over the last few years, the market for modern sporting rifles has experienced significant excess manufacturing capacity. Given this level of manufacturing capacity, we believe there is adequate supply for modern sporting rifles for the foreseeable future.

Veilleux also cited military and law enforcement demand, noting, “These high-volume contracts are absorbing all of Colt’s manufacturing capacity for rifles.”

This explanation appears rather dubious. The civilian market for rifles is brisk. A more likely explanation may be connected to the recent OxyContin settlement22. As Mark Alexander observes, “If Purdue Pharma can be held liable for how physicians prescribe and consumers use its products, then will firearm manufacturers be next? Perhaps Colt believes that only those who are in current production of ARs would be liable when those legal challenges begin.”

TOP NEWS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

TRUMP TAX-RETURN VICTORY: According to CNBC32, “A federal judge has sided with the Trump campaign’s request to halt a California law that’s aimed at forcing the president to release his tax returns. … The ruling marks a major victory for Trump, who is fighting multiple Democratic-led efforts to force him to reveal the returns. California is expected to appeal.” Meanwhile, NBC News adds33 that “Trump filed a lawsuit Thursday against Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, who subpoenaed Trump’s accounting firm for eight years of Trump’s personal and corporate tax returns earlier this month.”

FAKE HATE GROUPS TARGETED: “House Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee said on Thursday that over 60 alleged hate groups, mostly socially conservative organizations, anti-immigration entities, and religious groups should be stripped of their tax-exempt status,” according to the Washington Examiner34, which further notes, “The groups were designated as ‘hate groups’ by the Southern Poverty Law Center, a group that itself is controversial and whose founder was fired this year for misconduct.” The SPLC is the biggest hate group of all35, and yet Democrats are relying on it to destroy conservative institutions.

PELOSI’S DRUG PLAN: “Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday unveiled her long-awaited plan to lower prescription drug prices, one of the top priorities for Democrats this year. The plan would allow the secretary of Health and Human Services to negotiate the price of up to 250 drugs per year, and the lower prices would apply to people both with private insurance and those on Medicare. The plan is far-reaching and significantly left of center, which would likely make it very difficult to get passed through the Republican-controlled Senate, and there are still some concerns from progressives in the House that the plan does not go far enough.” (The Hill36)

FACEBOOK’S AMBIGUOUS CONFAB: “President Trump and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg held a meeting at the White House to discuss internet regulation. ‘Mark is in Washington, D.C., meeting with policymakers to hear their concerns and talk about future internet regulation. He also had a good, constructive meeting with President Trump at the White House today,’ Facebook said in a statement Thursday. Zuckerberg and Sen. Josh Hawley also met Thursday to talk about tech regulation. Hawley said the Facebook head refused his demands to sell Instagram and WhatsApp as well as to submit to independent audits on censorship.” (Washington Examiner37)

WARREN’S HYPOCRISY: “Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren hired a Planned Parenthood lobbyist to a key role in her presidential campaign Tuesday, just one day after Warren announced a plan that would ‘end lobbying as we know it,’” The Daily Caller reports38. If not for double standards, Democrats wouldn’t have any.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Marc A. Thiessen: “[Dick] Durbin and [Nancy] Pelosi understand that the threats to impeach [Justice Brett] Kavanaugh are a godsend for Trump. And they come in the wake of Senate Democrats issuing an unprecedented threat to the other Supreme Court justices. In a brief, they warned that if the high court does not rule as Democrats wish in a gun case, they could ‘restructure’ the court when they take power in the 2020 elections — packing it with liberal justices, flipping a 5-to-4 conservative majority to a liberal majority. Democrats do not seem to realize that when they make threats like these, they are not hurting Kavanaugh or Trump, they are hurting themselves. The Washington Post reports that in 2016, ‘26% of Trump voters told pollsters that Supreme Court nominees were the most important factor in their voting, compared with only 18% of Hillary Clinton voters who said the same.’ As we have seen in the past two elections, when the Supreme Court is on the ballot, Democrats lose. In other words, Democrats should not want voters to be thinking about Brett Kavanaugh or liberal court packing when they cast their ballots in 2020. Republicans should. So, let the impeachment proceedings begin.”

SHORT CUTS

Food for thought: “Justin Trudeau at one point chastised a young woman at a townhall for saying ‘mankind’ instead of ‘people-kind’ when asking a question — but didn’t think twice about dressing up in blackface at age 30. Just let that sink in for a minute everyone…” —Meghan McCain

Friendly fire: “I can’t even read the LGBT media anymore, because it’s all ‘too gay, not gay enough, wrong kind of gay.’” —Pete Buttigieg

A blind squirrel finds a nut: “Take recent demands to boycott businesses whose investors have voiced support for the president. … The question is not whether business boycotts are legitimate. … The question is whether Americans can live and work together without being so absolutist about politics and intolerant of viewpoint diversity. … To put it simply, healthy democracy is about living with disagreement, not eliminating it. … An approach that demands silence on contested issues, or that extends bitter political division into commerce and every other sphere of life, will succeed only in fracturing the country even more deeply.” —Michael Bloomberg

Idiocracy: “DC was the 1st territory in the United States to free the enslaved. It’s where Black Americans fled the tyranny of slavery & towards greater freedom, to DC. Yet today it’s where 2nd class citizenship reigns, and the right to vote is denied. It’s time to recognize DC statehood.” —Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Facts are stubborn things… “We need to go beyond hard data. We need to go beyond just thinking about the facts. I want you to think about this with your heart.” —Marianne Williamson regarding nuclear energy

Non compos mentis: “We might not own our own cars. Our current car ownership and usage model is really inefficient and bad for the environment.” —Andrew Yang’s response to the question, “What does the world look like to you in 2050?”

Demo-gogues: “I don’t know of any other Democrat who agrees with Beto O'Rourke [on gun confiscation], but it’s no excuse not to go forward.” —Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer

Braying jenny: “I have taught juvenile delinquents who were more respectful in a classroom than this [Corey Lewandowski], than [Brett] Kavanaugh. … I’ve had kids who were murderers and pimps who have behaved better than this.” —Joy Behar

And last… “As we have this conversation about blackface and the evils of appropriation, please remember that a man appropriating femininity and dressing like an absurd caricature of a woman is definitely not offensive or degrading or wrong in any way. Totally different! For reasons!” —Matt Walsh
