SANDERS’S RENT CONTROL: “Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) has released an ambitious housing plan that stays true to the candidate’s interventionist brand of democratic socialism. In a speech to trade union members in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, Sanders laid out his vision for tackling high housing costs, homelessness, and gentrification through a mix of nationwide rent control, increased federal spending on housing vouchers and public housing construction, and higher taxes on the wealthy.” (Reason28)
SNOWDEN LAWSUIT: “The Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit Tuesday against former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden for violating his non-disclosure agreements with the CIA and the NSA by writing a new book about his leaks. … The filing alleges that Snowden violated his non-disclosure agreements by failing to submit his manuscript to the agencies for pre-publication review, as is a standard process for former employees and contractors of the agencies. The DOJ aims to ensure that no funds are transferred to Snowden or at his direction while the court is resolving the United States’ claims.” (Fox News29)
FREE SPEECH & RELIGIOUS LIBERTY: “The free speech rights of two Christian artists who make wedding invitations were violated by an anti-discrimination ordinance in Phoenix that makes it illegal to refuse service to same-sex couples for religious reasons, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled Monday. The 4-3 decision reversed lower-court rulings favoring the city.” (Associated Press30)
ABORTION RATE TUMBLES: The Washington Post says31, “A new Guttmacher Institute report released on Wednesday outlines dramatic changes in the abortion landscape between 2011 and 2017. The U.S. abortion rate hit an all-time low — again. … The report estimated the abortion rate in 2017, the most recent year studied, at 13.5 per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. That compares with 14.6 in 2014 and 16.9 in 2011 and is the lowest rate since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion through the landmark decision Roe v. Wade in 1973.” Unfortunately, that’s still nearly a million abortions too many: “In total, 862,320 abortions took place in 2017 at health-care facilities. About 339,640, or about 39 percent, of those were medical abortions, which involve taking pills to induce miscarriage as opposed to traditional surgical abortion.”
MERRIAM-WEBSTER GOES WOKE: “Merriam-Webster announced Tuesday that it has added the nonbinary pronoun ‘they’ to its dictionary. The nonbinary pronoun is now listed as one of four definitions of the word by the online dictionary company. Merriam-Webster defines ‘they’ as "used to refer to a single person whose gender identity is nonbinary.” (The Hill32)
POLICY: “Autonomous weapons” — the real robot threat (National Review33)
POLICY: Should failing schools be closed? What the research says (Manhattan Institute34)
HUMOR: Hypocrisy: Right-wingers who love it when The Babylon Bee makes stuff up suddenly get mad when The New York Times does it (The Babylon Bee35)

OPINION IN BRIEF
Ben Shapiro: “Ex-slave Frederick Douglass’s take on American history remains the most honest, as well as the most visionary. While acknowledging that to the American slave, Independence Day represents ‘more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim,’ Douglass recognized that the Constitution is a ‘glorious liberty document,’ the Declaration of Independence a charter of ‘saving principles.’ American history is our common history. [Beto] O'Rourke’s pathetic rewriting of American history is designed not to unify us as a nation but to divide us — to call us away from the unifying principles that lie at the foundation of America, in favor of divisive principles of tribal partisanship. We must recognize the evils of American history — that is part of our common story. In fact, our quest to rid ourselves of those evils is our common story. But if we wish to survive as a nation, we must also recognize that the story of America lies in the constant purification of our actions to align with our founding principles, not oppose them.”
SHORT CUTS
Observations: “Once you see Trump as history’s greatest nightmare, every action taken in opposition to him and those allied with him is justified. This kind of thinking is how you get people trying to shoot up a baseball field full of Republican congressmen.” —Jim Geraghty
For the record: “Do you know that I get in trouble when I don’t say that [the president is racist]?” —former DNC chief Donna Brazile
Obstructionist on standby: “I won’t commit to anything full time until next year’s election because I need to be free to speak, so I’m in a little bit of a state of suspended animation. I can’t go lead a nonprofit or take a prominent position somewhere else, because I need to be able to speak.” —James Comey on his unemployed status
Now do Bill Clinton: “Someone should investigate [Bret Kavanaugh]. Because the fact that something has not been proven it doesn’t mean it didn’t occur, right?” —Sen. Kamala Harris
Let’s buy back the Constitution instead: “I do believe that we need to do buybacks and I’ll tell you why. First of all, let’s be clear about what assault weapons are. They have been designed to kill a lot of human beings quickly. They are weapons of war with no place on the streets of a civil society. I’ve seen assault weapons kill babies and police officers.” —Kamala Harris (She’s totally wrong37.)
D'oh! “You get a tax break for a race horse. Why in God’s name couldn’t we provide an $8,000 tax credit for everybody who has childcare costs? It would put 720 million women back in the workforce.” —Joe Biden (There are about 320 million total people in the U.S.)
Non sequitur: “You can run the best campaign, you can have the best plans, you can get the nomination, you can win the popular vote. And you can lose the Electoral College and therefore the election for these four reasons. Number one, voter suppression.” —Hillary Clinton, who won the popular vote by three million, blaming voter suppression for her loss
Race bait: “[There is] a very determined minority — in this case, wealthy white men and wealthy white Christian men and Christian Americans who are of the fundamentalist variety — who are very clear that no matter what happens, if they have to pull the South Africa model to maintain power forever they will do it, and they’re not afraid of it, and they’re increasingly open about it.” —MSNBC’s Joy Reid
And last… “I am changing my pronouns to ‘we/us/our.’ You see, I — or rather we — identify not just as myself but as all selves. We identify as me, but also you and everyone else. You might protest that you are not me, to which we would agree. You are not me because there is no me. You are us, we are you, yours is ours. This isn’t difficult to understand.” —Matt Walsh
