IN BRIEF

Labor Day, Economics, and Hurricane Dorian10

Today is Labor Day, and that means the unofficial end of summer on a day of celebration of the American worker. The holiday originated in the late 19th century and was born of the labor movement, though many Americans, led by President Grover Cleveland, pushed for and secured a September date to distinguish it from the socialist/communist “International Workers Day,” or “May Day,” on May 1. Labor Day was made an official federal holiday in 1894.

As we mark the day, let’s take a quick look at a few related topics.

First, Hurricane Dorian, currently a Category 5 monster, is heading for Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas — not exactly a welcome holiday event. The days and weeks ahead with be filled with the extensive labor and massive expense of recovery, but Americans are a resilient lot.

As for the economy, as we’ve hammered home in recent weeks, the positive outlook is exactly why the Leftmedia is incessantly running reports of economic doom and gloom on the horizon. A good economy is bad news for Democrats. If their prophesies come true, it will be because they succeeded in undermining consumer confidence.

Well, here are the facts: The August jobs report won’t be released until this Friday, but the employment picture is largely a good one — even if recent revisions are being used by Democrats and their Leftmedia propagandists to forecast a recession11. The unemployment rate stands near a 50-year low of 3.7%, meaning one of the biggest hurdles for increasing employment is that companies are finding it difficult to fill jobs with workers. Manufacturing has taken a hit because of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, which are also hurting American consumers with higher prices. But Trump is calculating that the U.S. economy can withstand a needed battle with China that he didn’t start12.

Third, wages are growing and consumers are generally confident. In fact, The Wall Street Journal reports, “American workers under 35 report being happier with their paychecks than people over 55 for the first time since at least 2011, according to a new report from the Conference Board, a business-research organization that polls U.S. employees about workplace satisfaction. Overall, the share of workers satisfied with their paychecks rose to 46.4% in 2018, from 43% in 2017, an increase that mirrors federal data showing that wage growth accelerated in 2018.” Furthermore, “Nearly 54% of U.S. workers said they were satisfied with their jobs in 2018, the highest share reported in more than two decades.”

In any case, a happy Labor Day to those Americans taking a break from laboring today!

CA Court Overturns Conviction Against Steinle Killer13

If there wasn’t already more than enough insult added to injury in the sad case14 of the death of Kate Steinle at the hands of a five-time deported illegal-alien felon, a California appeals court on Friday overturned the lone conviction against her killer. In the case against Mexican national Jose Ines Garcia-Zarate, the First District Court of Appeals overturned his felony possession of a weapon conviction on a seeming technicality. In its decision, the court noted that the trial judge failed to give the jury “the momentary possession instruction.” The court explained, “It is undisputed that defendant was holding the gun when it fired. But that fact alone does not establish he possessed the gun for more than a moment. To possess the gun, defendant had to know he was holding it.”

You might need to read that last sentence again.

So, as things currently stand, all charges surrounding Steinle’s death have been either dismissed or overturned. Even the Steinles’ civil suit against the city of San Francisco for its “sanctuary city” laws, which directly led to Garcia-Zarate being released rather than detained for immigration authorities, was dismissed15 earlier this year.

Upon hearing the news, acting U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ken Cuccinelli responded, “Kate Steinle was tragically killed because San Francisco proudly proclaims itself a sanctuary city. How many more innocents will die [before] sanctuary cities stop harboring violent criminals? This defies common sense, public safety, [and] human decency.”

The good news is, while California has failed to hold Garcia-Zarate accountable, he is still in custody facing federal charges for possessing a firearm and being in the U.S. illegally. That trial is scheduled to begin in January.

TOP NEWS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

WEEK-LONG HAVOC: “Hurricane Dorian has now stalled, continuing its Category 5 siege of the northwestern Bahamas, but will track dangerously close to a long swath of the East Coast from Florida to Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and southeastern Virginia this week. … Dorian’s forecast track continues to be the razor’s edge between more severe hurricane impacts reaching land, compared to those impacts staying barely offshore. … Regardless of its exact track, Dorian is likely to be a dangerous hurricane this week near the Southeast coast.” (The Weather Channel21)

TEXAS MASS SHOOTING: “A 17-month-old girl was among the 22 injured in a shooting rampage around Odessa, Texas, as the death toll increased to seven victims Sunday,” NBC News reports22. “The [perpetrator] was killed in a shootout with police.” The assailant, who had just been terminated from his job, launched his rampage following a traffic stop. The circumstances notwithstanding, Republican Sens. Rick Scott and Pat Toomey envision passing gun-control measures. “I’m hopeful,” Sen. Scott declared23. And according to Sen. Toomey, “[Trump] is very interested in doing something meaningful.”

STRAIGHT PRIDE: Via NBC News24: “A so-called ‘Straight Pride Parade’ in Boston on Saturday drew as many counterprotesters as marchers in addition to a heavy police presence. The parade, which drew several dozen participants, kicked off at around noon to the sound of Lee Greenwood’s ‘God Bless the USA’ with some floats displaying messages of support for President Donald Trump, with signs such as ‘build the wall,’ ‘Trump nation’ and ‘Blue Lives Matter.’” The too-clever-by-half Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded: “For men who are allegedly so ‘proud’ of being straight, they seem to show real incompetence at attracting women to their event. Seems more like a ‘I-Struggle-With-Masculinity’ parade to me.”

A FITTING VERDICT: “A Montana judge has ordered two men who allegedly lied about having served in the military in an effort to get special treatment in veterans court to wear ‘I stole valor’ signs as part of their parole conditions.” (Time25)

THE HAZARDS OF GOVERNMENT HEALTHCARE: The Veterans Administration failed to stop pathologist who misdiagnosed thousands — and showed up drunk for work (Hot Air27)

NEW HANDOUT: “U.S. presidential contender Bernie Sanders proposed a plan on Saturday to cancel $81 billion in existing past-due medical debt for Americans, but offered no details on how it would be financed. Sanders … said in a statement that under his plan, the government would negotiate and pay off past-due medical bills that have been reported to credit agencies.” (Reuters28)

TRADE-WAR FALLOUT: “A measure of how Americans view the strength of the economy fell to the lowest level in almost three years, reflecting growing worries about the U.S. trade war with China that’s led to higher and higher tariffs. The final consumer sentiment survey fell to 89.8 in August from an early estimate of 92.3 and a 98.4 reading in July, the University of Michigan said Friday.” (MarketWatch29)

BREXIT BRAWL: “[Boris] Johnson, who took over as prime minister in July, drove a spike into a raw nerve in Britain when he announced last week that he intends to suspend Parliament for five weeks, sharply limiting members’ opportunity to debate the terms of Britain’s Oct. 31 Brexit divorce from the European Union. That maneuver set up a potentially ferocious showdown on Tuesday, when Parliament returns from its summer recess. Jeremy Corbyn, Johnson’s chief rival as leader of the opposition Labour Party, has promised to fight Johnson in the House of Commons, calling his action a ‘smash and grab’ on democracy.” (The Washington Post30)

OPINION IN BRIEF

Gary Bauer: “Last month, progressives celebrated when Montgomery County, Maryland, enacted what The Washington Post called ‘the strongest ban’ on cooperation with ICE in the DC region. But in the weeks since that report, Montgomery County leaders have been scrambling to explain why their sanctuary-city policies are a good thing. At least six illegal immigrants have been arrested for rape and sexual abuse in recent days. Sadly, this is nothing new. A report earlier this year noted that such crimes have been ‘steadily increasing over the last four years.’ In addition, identity theft ‘almost doubled’ from 2017 to 2018. It seems that one of the most upscale Washington, DC, suburbs is rapidly becoming a sanctuary for criminals. How is all that left-wing ideology working out for the residents of Montgomery County?”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “Government growing beyond our consent had become a lumbering giant, slamming shut the gates of opportunity, threatening to crush the very roots of our freedom. What brought America back? The American people brought us back — with quiet courage and common sense; with undying faith that in this nation under God the future will be ours, for the future belongs to the free.” —Ronald Reagan

Gun grabber: “[Confiscation is] exactly what we are going to do. Americans who own [semiautomatic firearms] will have to sell them to the government.” —Beto O'Rourke

Braying Jackass: “The thoughts and prayers that you just referred to, it has done nothing to stop the epidemic of gun violence.” —Beto O'Rourke

Too many people don’t “get” the reason for the Second Amendment: “Often times it’s actually hunters and folks that shoot on a range that understand that you don’t need these weapons of war, the AR-15 and other similar weapons. I think more and more, many of them get it.” —Julian Castro

Case in point: “Sure, I agree a certain percentage of people somehow fear the government is going to try and take over the entire country somehow and they’re going to need their weapons. But that’s actually a minority of people.” —Julian Castro

Non compos mentis: “And these kids who come [illegally], and they end up doing well, they become Americans before a lot of Americans become Americans. … I’m serious.” —Joe Biden

Grand delusions: “When we win that nomination, I’ll … make sure that we defeat the most dangerous president in the history of this country.” —Sen. Bernie Sanders

Non sequitur: “The weirdest thing about the electoral college is the fact that if it wasn’t specifically in the Constitution for the presidency, it would be unconstitutional.” —MSNBC’s Chris Hayes

And last… “I know Hillary Clinton blames James Comey for her loss, but frankly, Comey and Hillary deserve each other. Both think they’re above the rules and laws they impose on others; both think because they’re ‘righteous’, they’re entitled to break the rules. Their hypocrisy is sickening.” —Ari Fleischer
