THE FOUNDATION
“Citizens by birth or choice of a common country, that country has a right to concentrate your affections. The name of American, which belongs to you, in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of Patriotism, more than any appellation derived from local discriminations.” —George Washington (1796)

IN TODAY’S EDITION
There won’t be a citizenship question on the 2020 census.1 John Zogby says Democrats should win in 2020, but there are warning signs.2 Daily Features: More Analysis3, Columnists4, Headlines5, Opinion in Brief6, Short Cuts7, Memes8, and Cartoons9.
IN BRIEF
Trump Drops Citizenship Question After Roberts Rules10
The fight to include a citizenship question in the 2020 census is over. On Tuesday, a Justice Department lawyer explained, “The decision has been made to print the 2020 Decennial Census questionnaire without a citizenship question, and … the printer has been instructed to begin the printing process.” This change represents a quick about-face for President Donald Trump, who had initially expressed a commitment to delay the census in order to include a citizenship question following the Supreme Court’s erroneous decision last week to reject the administration’s rationale for including the question.
Chief Justice John Roberts once again showed his judicial weakness11 when he chose to side with his leftist colleagues in a 5-4 decision. His rationale of rejecting not the question itself but the Trump administration’s motivation for including it demonstrated that Roberts is a justice who cannot be trusted12 to rule on the constitutional merits of a law in question. Feelings rather than objective-based reasoning seem to have great sway with Roberts.
The decision to go ahead with the printing of census materials without a citizenship question is a recognition by Trump that there is no way to meet Roberts’s arbitrary standard for justifying the motive for including the citizenship question, regardless of the time constraints. To comply with the constitutional mandate to administrate the census, Trump had little choice but to concede.
This is clearly a win for Democrats, who aim to increase their power13 via swelling their districts with swaths of noncitizens — people who cannot vote and yet do contribute to the overall population numbers in their districts, which in turn affects the number of representatives in blue areas. Meanwhile, the U.S. government will continue having difficulty accurately recording the number of noncitizens currently living in the country.

Zogby: Dems May Win 2020 But…14
Democrat pollster John Zogby says, “The Democrats enter the [2020] race with some distinct advantages. First, history is on their side. They have won the popular vote in six of the past seven nationwide elections.” In fact, he says, “If the election were held today, the polls are clear that [President Donald] Trump would lose — perhaps in a landslide.” But the devil is in the details, he warns, and besides, “The election is not today.”
Zogby points to some warning signs for Democrats that, for Patriot Post readers, will strike at familiar themes.
“More Americans are earning a paycheck today than ever before,” he says, noting that the economy is strong. Indeed, Trump’s policies are benefiting Americans across the board15. Unless Democrats get the recession16 they’re hoping and pushing for, the economy will only help Trump.
However, Zogby says Democrats have a bigger problem, and it’s one they see as a strength. “The party is very diverse and there will be demands to have a woman, an Hispanic, an African American, a member of the LGBTQ community and so on,” he says. “I can see this becoming a battle royal and causing potentially fatal damage to party unity. Simply being anti-Trump will not be enough for the Democrats to win.” Moreover, separating every single issue into victims versus villains runs the risk of alienating too many voters.
Finally, Zogby says, “The Democrats also suffer from elitism, a sense that they are the party of college-bred, coastal liberals who are in full possession of the truth. This has hurt them in previous elections — 2000, 2004, and 2016 come to mind.” As already noted, if Democrats continue to deride the “deplorables,” they are bound to lose a lot of votes. Time will tell, of course, but when your own pollster is issuing warnings, it might be best to heed them. Following last week’s debates, it’s hard to argue against Zogby’s observations, other than it appears the Democrats have decided that they will show no quarter to even moderates in their party.

‘MERICA: “President Trump wanted tanks and he’ll get 'em for his July 4 shindig — but they won’t be moving,” conveys the New York Daily News26. “Top brass put the brakes on the president’s plan for a military parade to complement his Independence Day speech on the National Mall. Fearing tanks could tear up city streets, the armored vehicles will be there in a 'static’ display.” And just in case you were wondering, Trump’s tanks aren’t a scandal27.
THE UNPATRIOTIC LEFT: “A new Gallup poll has disturbing news: the percentage of respondents claiming they were ‘extremely proud’ to be American was the lowest since Gallup started asking that question in 2001. … Unsurprisingly, only 22% of respondents claiming they were Democrats agreed with that sentiment as opposed to a whopping 76% of Republicans. 41% of independents said they were ‘extremely proud.’” (The Daily Wire28)
GOOD CALL: “Gov. Doug Ducey revealed on Tuesday that the state of Arizona will be withdrawing all of the financial incentives provided to Nike following the company’s decision29 to pull an American flag-themed sneaker it deemed offensive.” (The Daily Caller30)
WELL PREPARED: “President Donald Trump and the Republican Party raised a whopping $105 million in the second quarter as they prepare for a tough bid to keep the White House in 2020. The president’s campaign and his joint fundraising committees with the GOP took in $54 million during the period, the Trump campaign said Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee raised $51 million.” (CNBC31)
