THE FOUNDATION

“Without liberty, law loses its nature and its name, and becomes oppression. Without law, liberty also loses its nature and its name, and becomes licentiousness.” —James Wilson (1790)

IN BRIEF

Deportation Raids Delayed ‘At the Request of Democrats’10

“At the request of Democrats, I have delayed the Illegal Immigration Removal Process (Deportation) for two weeks to see if the Democrats and Republicans can get together and work out a solution to the Asylum and Loophole problems at the Southern Border. If not, Deportations start!” President Donald Trump announced via his favorite platform over the weekend.

Last week, Trump declared11 he would ramp up ICE raids to catch and deport illegal aliens. Predictably, Democrats went apoplectic, ranging from decrying border “concentration camps”12 to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declaring deportation “an act of utter malice and bigotry.”

So what’s the real reason for Trump’s delay? Two possibilities have been suggested: First, Acting ICE Director Mark Morgan says the leaked raid details may have endangered the lives of Border Patrol agents. Second, Pelosi reportedly telephoned the president to beg for a delay. More likely, she offered him emergency border funding13.

We’d also offer a third option: Democrats have not only stubbornly refused to offer any plan for addressing the border crisis, they have actively invited the invasion14 and blocked Trump’s every effort to address it. Trump is calling their bluff, and he’s doing so just in time for the gaggle of 382 Democrat presidential candidates to take the debate stage later this week. Trump has promised to live tweet the debates, and we don’t doubt he’ll enjoy highlighting their lack of an immigration plan. He knows all too well that the Democrats’ only agenda is to obstruct him, so he’s letting them sweat for two weeks while he waits. Every time he can demonstrate that Democrats are blocking needed action at the border, it will help him politically.

In the meantime, regular deportations will continue, as will the flood of illegals crossing the southern border.

A Curious Rape Allegation15

Elle advice columnist E. Jean Carroll has accused Donald Trump of rape. It’s not new for a president to be accused of rape16, but due to its seriousness, let’s consider this charge.

We won’t quote Carroll’s rather sordid details17, but suffice it to say that she says the alleged assault happened in the dressing room of New York’s Bergdorf Goodman’s department store in the mid 1990s. She claims to have told friends at the time but not the police, because one friend advised her, “Tell no one. Forget it! He has 200 lawyers. He’ll bury you.” Both friends “confirmed their accounts to New York” magazine, which broke the story.

Trump certainly had a team of lawyers, and he definitely had a penchant for misbehaving with beautiful women. Yet this also brings to mind the cravenly timed accusations against now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh — a man who absolutely did not have Trump’s track record. Those almost certainly false allegations had no corroborating witnesses and no contemporaneous reports of any kind. They were timed solely to destroy the nomination18 of Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.

When did Carroll bring her accusations? Just days after Trump launched his 2020 reelection bid19. Also, she has written a soon-to-be-released man-hating book that she’d like people to buy. Indeed, in vigorously denying the allegations, Trump said, “I’ve never met this person in my life. She is trying to sell a new book — that should indicate her motivation. It should be sold in the fiction section.”

Trump’s morality — or utter lack thereof — has been the subject of various analysis here in our humble shop, including to note that it was, so to speak, baked into the cake for voters in 2016. Trump is the guy who said, “You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. … Grab ‘em by the p—y. You can do anything.”

Perhaps Carroll’s allegation is meant to up the ante from marital infidelity with porn stars to actual sexual assault. But we find it telling that the story has not dominated all news coverage 24/7 since it dropped Friday. True, Carroll made the rounds on the talk shows — where she bizarrely claimed20 she wished she had asked for Trump’s tax returns during the assault and insists that she’s not filing charges because it would be “disrespectful to the women who are down on the border who are being raped around the clock down there without any protection.” Whatever that means.

In any case, it hasn’t been a front-page blockbuster. Perhaps the Leftmedia learned a lesson with the Kavanaugh debacle.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Peggy Noonan: “The [British] people asked for Brexit. The government has to deliver it. You can’t insult the very idea of democracy and say, Oh, well, this is hard, so we’ll have a do-over on the vote and hope the people will deliver a different outcome. You have to accept the result and forge ahead. Make Brexit happen, make the break. Move forward as the people instructed. If you can get EU cooperation, get it. If not, stop pleading and dragging it out. Settle this. If it works it will be apparent within a few years, so hold a parade. If it doesn’t, public opinion on a second referendum will be different. But stop whingeing. You were hired to lead the people. If you’re not talented enough to do that, you can at least follow them.”

SHORT CUTS

The Gipper: “Government has an important role in helping develop a country’s economic foundation. But the critical test is whether government is genuinely working to liberate individuals by creating incentives to work, save, invest, and succeed.” —Ronald Reagan

For the record: “Its completely inappropriate, it’s reckless, it’s irresponsible, it’s misinformed, and it’s flat out wrong.” —Acting ICE Director Mark Morgan on AOC’s “concentration camps” remark

Friendly fire: “When she analogized institutions used for mass slaughter to legitimate institutions of government, that’s a moral and political obscenity.” —Democrat strategist Doug Schoen

Braying Jenny: “I think a lot of people are conflating what a death camp looks like or a specific removal of people. These people are coming to the border. We are removing them from the border. We are placing them in camps.” —Rep. Ilhan Omar

Non Compos Mentis: “I would find [taking legal action against Trump] disrespectful to the women who are down on the border who are being raped around the clock down there without any protection. As you know, the women have very little protection there. It would just be disrespectful. Mine was three minutes. I’m a mature woman. I can handle it. I can keep going. You know my life has gone on. I’m a happy woman. But for the women down there and, actually, around the world, you know, in every culture this is going on no matter high in society or low in society, it just seems disrespectful that I would bring [charges].” —advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, who alleges Trump raped her in the 1990s15

What could possibly go wrong? “We are gonna … create a Medicare for All health-care system which guarantees health care to every man, woman, and child and saves the average American substantial sums of money. … When I talk about health care being a human right, last time I heard that undocumented people are human beings as well.” —Sen. Bernie Sanders

And last… “The problem is that college costs have skyrocketed versus inflation due to government interference in loans, and the solution people are proposing is to have the government pay off those loans, giving colleges even less incentive to cut costs. There would be no student debt crisis if colleges hadn’t been fueled into an inflation of costs. If you’re talking about loans and nothing about making colleges reduce costs, despite all you posturing about caring about students, you are a bad person and making things worse.” —Frank J. Fleming
