THE FOUNDATION

“One hundred and seventy-three despots would surely be as oppressive as one.” —James Madison (1788)

IN TODAY’S EDITION

It’s time for Democrats to put up or shut up about impeachment.1
Ignorance drives socialism’s favorability.2
Daily Features: More Analysis3, Columnists4, Headlines5, Opinion in Brief6, Short Cuts7, Memes8, and Cartoons9.

IN BRIEF

Trump Impeachment: Put Up or Shut Up10

Every Republican president since Ronald Reagan has faced Democrat demands for impeachment. Dems called for Reagan’s impeachment multiple times throughout his two terms. In 1991, George H.W. Bush heard impeachment calls due to the Gulf War, and George W. Bush saw Democrats go so far as to introduce 35 articles of impeach centered on the bipartisan war in Iraq. President Donald Trump has faced nonstop calls for impeachment dating back to even before his inauguration. In other words, calls for impeachment from Democrats are standard political practice, no matter how much they claim otherwise.

Now, it appears the constant Democrat drumbeat for impeachment has reached a fever pitch as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has long resisted taking any actual action on impeachment, held a meeting with House Democrats this morning. For political veterans like Pelosi, the goal is to push the negative narrative of Trump supposedly obstructing justice in order to keep a cloud over his presidency, while at the same time avoiding too much political fallout from these clearly partisan allegations. Calling Trump a criminal is a lot easier than proving he is one.

As predicted, following the meeting, Pelosi once again trumpeted the narrative while refusing to initiate impeachment proceedings. “We do believe that it’s important to follow the facts,” she bloviated. “We believe that no one is above the law, including the president of the United States. And we believe that the president of the United States is engaged in a cover-up. And that was the nature of the meeting.”

Pelosi knows that following through on impeachment proceedings without having any obvious and clear illegal action with which to charge the president is a recipe for disaster. Acting on the real reason behind their obstruction allegations — “Trump is a bad guy because we don’t like him, so therefore he must be impeached” — won’t fly with the vast majority of Americans.

Ironically, California Democrat Jackie Speier unwittingly admitted as much, stating, “Let me be clear: I don’t believe that in the end we will do any more than lay out for the American people the articles of impeachment and then, rather than send it to the Senate where he would be tried, I think the trial will be the 2020 election and the American people can convict him.” It’s all about partisan politics. And it’s a cynical political play Democrats have repeatedly used for decades.

Most Democrats Are Clueless About Socialism11

American attitudes toward socialism have shifted significantly since our nation fought the National Socialists of Germany in World War II. For one thing, decades of indoctrination in the U.S. “education” system has led millions of Americans to believe Nazis weren’t even left-wing socialists and that, instead, they were “right wing.” This type of confusion about what socialism even means leads to a more favorable opinion of it12.

A recent Gallup survey13 finds, “While 51% of U.S. adults say socialism would be a bad thing for the country, 43% believe it would be a good thing. Those results contrast with a 1942 Roper/Fortune survey that found 40% describing socialism as a bad thing, 25% a good thing and 34% not having an opinion.”

Later, Gallup notes, “Additionally, while a majority of Democrats view socialism positively, that is not a major change in the eight years Gallup has tracked this metric. The major shift over this time has been the reduced rate of Democrats who now view capitalism positively (47%).”

It’s worth noting that, for many folks, “approval” of socialism can be summed up in their dislike for President Donald Trump. So take the results with a grain of salt.

But, again, at a deeper level, there is rampant ignorance14 about the term. Most people, particularly young people, have no idea what socialism actually is, or they associate it with the European version that includes socialized medicine and social services nested in free-enterprise economies.

In order to win these votes, Democrats have been pushing their “Better Deal15” socialism for several years now. Given the monolithic reach of their Leftmedia super PAC, it’s no wonder increasing numbers of Americans find it appealing. Democrats offer all the “free stuff” without mentioning the disastrous and deadly results of socialism. After all, what’s so bad about the government taking care of health care and education? It’s less bad if you don’t associate socialism with the multiple totalitarian examples16 of actual socialism throughout the last 100 years.

The terminus of socialism is tyranny, and that is antithetical to the Liberty bequeathed to Americans by our Founders. It’s hard to overstate the importance of educating our countrymen about that truth.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Ben Shapiro: “For much of the left … the term ‘constitutional right’ has simply come to mean ‘thing I want.’ And that is incredibly dangerous, given that the power of the judiciary springs not from legislative capacity but from supposed interpretive power. Judges are not supposed to read things into the Constitution but to properly read the Constitution itself. The use of the judiciary as a club has led to a feeling of radical frustration among Americans; it has radically exacerbated our culture gap. The legislative moves in Alabama and other states will open a much-needed debate about the role of the states, the role of legislatures and the role of government. All of that is good for the country. Those who insist, however, that the Supreme Court act as a mechanism for their political priorities are of far more danger to the country than that debate.”

SHORT CUTS

Hyper hypocrisy: “They try to oppose all progress in this country … by pitting communities against one another that have never and have no business being pitted against one another. This is just the template. They try to import that division.” —Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blaming Republicans for Democrats’ stock-in-trade

Braying Jenny: “The Republicans are really good at misinformation and sort of really reorganizing facts to sort of paint a picture that really eventually is not rooted in fact. … They use it as a tool to stir up hate and division. And ignorance really is pervasive in many parts of … this country.” —Ilhan Omar

What could possibly go wrong? “It’s time for Washington, DC to have statehood and equal representation in Congress, and we should only need a simple majority to make it happen.” —Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (“The question that comes to my mind when I hear D.C. wants to become a state: how many of the people who live in the District work for Congress or some form of the federal government? How many of them are members of Congress themselves? Are we going to create a new state so a new member of Congress is established and he or she represents the interests of the Congressional members who live in the area? Because if that’s the case, it’s like Congressmen and women who live in the district but were voted into office in another area are being represented twice: once by themselves and again by the person who would represent the District.” — Townhall’s Beth Baumann)

Non compos mentis: “Pregnancy Kills. Abortion Saves Lives.” —By Warren M. Hern in The New York Times

The BIG Lie: “When a president calls clansman and Nazis and white supremacists very fine people — when he conflates the words of Representative Ilhan Omar … [and incites] islamaphobia and hatred and, yes, violence — you begin to be able to explain the rise in hate crimes every single one of the last three years. … [Trump] makes possible the acts of violence and hatred that we’re seeing play out in this country today.” —Beto O'Rourke

The BIG Lie II: “We’re not facing anti-abortion laws across this country; we are facing a sick attempt to strip us of our fundamental humanity and our individual autonomy. … And it’s not just an attack on women. It’s an attack on anyone who can or might get pregnant, including transgender men and gender non-conforming people.” —Planned Parenthood NYC President Laura McQuade

Village Idiot: “As the potential of women candidates to secure the Democratic nomination seems to be waning, Pete and Chasten [Buttigieg] appear on the cover of Time. And perhaps this is heterosexuality at its immaterial and strategic best, a heterosexuality that could take back to the presidency for the Democrats: white, centrist, and without women.” —Yale professor Greta LaFleur, author of Heterosexuality Without Women

And last… “Something I’ve noticed: most pro-lifers understand the pro-choice arguments completely And can articulate them totally accurately. I have seen very few pro-choicers accurately portray a pro-life argument. It’s always filled with hyperbole & misinformation.” —Allie Beth Stuckey
