IN BRIEF
Trump Enforces U.S. Border Laws as Dems Cry Foul11
Thomas Gallatin
U.S. border agents temporarily shut down the San Ysidro border port of entry Sunday and used tear gas to repel a group of several hundred individuals from the Central American migrant caravan who rushed and violently attempted to illegally cross the U.S. border. The caravan, now estimated to be over 8,000 strong, is currently holed up at a sports complex in Tijuana, Mexico, as migrants make their applications for asylum in the U.S.
Following the migrants’ attempted illegal crossing, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen explained the situation, stating12, “After being prevented from entering the Port of Entry, some of these migrants attempted to breach legacy fence infrastructure along the border and sought to harm CBP personnel by throwing projectiles at them. As I have continually stated, DHS will not tolerate this type of lawlessness and will not hesitate to shut down ports of entry for security and public safety reasons. We will also seek to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law anyone who destroys federal property, endangers our frontline operators, or violates our nation’s sovereignty.”
President Donald Trump then warned he would “permanently13” close the border if more was not done to prevent illegal crossings. “Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries,” he declared. “Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it anyway you want, but they are NOT coming into the U.S.A. We will close the Border permanently if need be. Congress, fund the WALL!”
Mexico announced that it will be deporting nearly 500 of the migrants. But if Mexico doesn’t want to have to deal with a population of illegal aliens living within its borders, then it too needs to stop them from illegally crossing its own southern border. Indeed, The idea that the U.S. should be responsible for having to house and care for these illegals simply because they mob the border demanding asylum is nonsense. Legally and orderly processing the asylum requests is the only way to properly and effectively handle the issue and prevent abuse. As National Review’s Jim Geraghty astutely observed14, “If you’re trying to run across the border and away from the border patrol, you’re not here to apply for asylum.”
Meanwhile, Democrats and leftists were quick to condemn the Trump administration over the U.S. Border Patrol agents’ use of tear gas to repel the violent illegals, suggesting the response was unnecessary and inhumane. In reality, the actions by U.S. law enforcement in confronting this type of violent and lawless activity is standard procedure for dealing with mobs. In 2013, under the Obama administration, U.S. Border Patrol agents used the same tactics, including tear gas, to repel a similar attempt by migrants to violently rush the border.
On a final note, soon-to-be House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) went so far as to call illegal aliens “patriotic15.” That’s an insult not only to American citizens but to immigrants who came here via legal channels. But she’ll do anything to evoke sympathy and woo future Democrat votes.

Roberts Challenges Trump and Gets It Wrong16
Just before Thanksgiving, Chief Justice John Roberts squared off with President Donald Trump in a war of words over the judiciary. After a Barack Obama-appointed judge blocked17 Trump’s order regarding asylum for illegal aliens, Trump griped, “This was an Obama judge.” That’s typical for Trump — and accurate in this case.
But Roberts is a staunch defender of an “independent” judiciary, and he just couldn’t let it pass without comment. In a rare political statement, Roberts declared, “We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges. What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them.”
“I wish Chief Justice Roberts were right,” asserted Rep. Trey Gowdy. “I wish there were not a politicization of the judiciary.”
As much as we too wish Roberts was right as the Founders intended, the modern judiciary is a political animal primarily because Democrat-appointed judges interpret the law not as written but according to a “living Constitution.” Trump was right in his reply: “Sorry Chief Justice John Roberts, but you do indeed have ‘Obama judges,’ and they have a much different point of view than the people who are charged with the safety of our country.”
Perhaps Roberts thinks he’s right because he, an appointee of George W. Bush, cast the deciding vote to find ObamaCare constitutional. But even that illustrates precisely why he’s wrong because Roberts went out of this way to rewrite the law so as to find it “constitutional.” It’s true that Trump’s losses have come at the hands of judges appointed by various presidents, not just Obama, but sometimes those rulings are blocking him from undoing what Obama did — as if Obama’s executive orders were part of the Constitution and Trump’s decision to undo them was thus by definition unconstitutional. A ruling earlier this month on DACA comes to mind18.
On a final note, if Roberts was correct, why did so many conservatives vote for Trump because of the judiciary? Why did Democrats filibuster Neil Gorsuch and then do their “level best” to character assassinate Brett Kavanaugh19? And why won’t a seriously ailing Ruth Bader Ginsburg retire now rather than wait for a Democrat president?

What to Make of the Latest Dire Climate Report20
Nate Jackson
“People are going to die if we don’t start addressing climate change ASAP.” So said socialism’s brightest new star, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. But so also said climate scientists Friday in releasing the Fourth National Climate Assessment — the first such report since 2014.
According to21 The Washington Times, “As many as 9,300 more people could die each year because of extreme heat or cold related to climate change by the end of this century. … The range of disease-spreading mosquitoes and ticks will expand, as will extreme weather events — all of which will bring additional mental health problems such as depression and even suicidal tendencies, the U.S. Global Change Research Program, made up of 13 federal agencies, said in the ‘Fourth National Climate Assessment.’”
The Washington Post adds22, “The report finds that the continental United States already is 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than it was 100 years ago, surrounded by seas that are on average nine inches higher and being racked by far worse heat waves than the nation experienced only 50 years ago.”
