THE FOUNDATION

“Democracy will soon degenerate into an anarchy, such an anarchy that every man will do what is right in his own eyes and no man’s life or property or reputation or liberty will be secure, and every one of these will soon mould itself into a system of subordination of all the moral virtues and intellectual abilities, all the powers of wealth, beauty, wit and science, to the wanton pleasures, the capricious will, and the execrable cruelty of one or a very few.” —John Adams (1763)

IN TODAY’S EDITION

Democrats sure know how to undermine election integrity.
Republican women win and then get ignored.
Daily Features: Columnists, Headlines, Memes, Cartoons, and Short Cuts.
Featured Analysis: China’s Middle Kingdom wants to be on top.

IN BRIEF
Election Shenanigans Continue a Week Later1

Thomas Gallatin

So who exactly is endangering democracy? Certainly not Republicans, notwithstanding the assertions of Democrats and the Leftmedia. On Monday evening, retired fighter pilot and Republican Rep. Martha McSally conceded defeat to anti-American Democrat Kyrsten Sinema in the Arizona Senate race. The result is a head-scratcher. How did Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Ducey soundly defeat Democrat David Garcia by 330,000 votes and 15 percentage points while McSally, just beneath him on the ballot, lost by 40,000 votes? Did early voters miss the late-breaking news on Sinema’s disparaging remarks against Arizonians2? Did President Donald Trump’s rumblings about birthright citizenship3 turn off moderate voters? Did the sorry records of the late John McCain or the outgoing Jeff Flake ruin McSally’s effort? In any case, the significant split in the Arizona vote is nigh unfathomable.

Then there’s Florida, where Broward County elections supervisor Brenda Snipes is likely on her way out the door following the myriad of voting shenanigans on her watch. Politico chronicles the abuses4: “Counting unlawful votes. Destroying ballots. Sunshine Law violations. Busted deadlines. So many controversies have bedeviled Broward County Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes — culminating in her office’s troubles in the aftermath of Florida’s chaotic 2018 elections — that her days in office are now numbered, insiders and lawmakers say.” She should have been removed years ago.

Meanwhile, Florida is in the midst of a recount of both the race for governor and U.S. Senate, and Palm Beach County elections supervisor Susan Bucher is complaining that the county will not be able to meet Thursday’s deadline. She blames bad voting equipment, which is laughable in one of the state’s wealthiest counties. By Florida law, if the county is unable to complete its recount by the deadline, then the originally recorded vote totals will be final. This would then confirm Republican victories for both the governorship and Senate and it would also most assuredly trigger Democrat lawsuits.

Speaking of lawsuits, the sore loser of the Georgia governor’s race, Democrat Stacey Abrams, filed a lawsuit asking a federal judge to allow the counting of votes cast outside the counties in which the voters were registered. Abrams contends that as long as the voters were Georgians it shouldn’t matter which county they are registered in.

Erick Erickson notes5 the dubious nature of this argument, writing, “State and county officials object because of the burdensome and ridiculous standard this would impose. Counties are responsible for their own voters. To be compelled to keep up with other counties’ voters would be too big a burden. Likewise, the alternative would be to centralize election processes with the Secretary of State. That is something Democrats in the state do not want as they are already convinced the Secretary of State tampered with the election despite a lack of evidence.”

Republican Brian Kemp’s margin of victory in the Georgia governor’s race is over 50,000 votes, with no more than 21,000 total outstanding votes remaining. In other words, even if 100% of the outstanding votes went to Abrams, she still has no possibility of winning. Her tactic here is to play up the false charge that Republicans are suppressing the vote, stealing the election, and endangering the democratic process. Nothing could be further from the truth, but the Leftmedia is more than willing to run with this despicable “neo Jim Crow” narrative.

It is Democrats, however, who will use whatever means necessary to steal elections or undermine the legitimacy of the victor.

Republican Women Ignored by Media6

Nate Jackson

Marsha Blackburn, Young Kim, Carol Miller, Kay Ivey, Kim Reynolds, Kristi Noem, Jeanette Nunez, Janice McGeachin. Most Americans could be forgiven for not ever having heard of these women, despite their elections to the U.S. Senate and House or to governorships or lieutenant governorships. They are each the first women in their respective states to win those positions. Kim is the first Korean-American woman to be elected to Congress from any state. So why are they so often ignored?

Because they’re Republican.

Instead, the media was busy slobbering over Beto O'Rourke in Texas. To be fair, there was plenty of media swooning over some women — New Mexico’s Debra Haaland and Kansas’s Sharice Davids, the first Native-American women elected to Congress, as well as Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar and Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib, the first Muslim-American women elected to Congress. All four are Democrats. Then there are the 10 “LGBT” members of Congress. All Democrats. And let’s not forget Democrat Socialist heartthrob Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman elected to Congress.

As our Robin Smith explained yesterday7, “Democrat women [are] convinced that all American voters born with a uterus should conform to vote as a gender bloc.” And as Mark Alexander has put it many times, Democrats bank on women being emotionally incontinent dupes8. Any woman who doesn’t vote Democrat — let alone runs for office as a Republican — is a traitor to half the human race. And Democrats freely blame women for whatever defeats they suffered last Tuesday.

The aforementioned long list of Republican women, however, shows that women are capable of thinking for themselves, despite Democrats’ best efforts to stop them from doing so.

Meanwhile, the great white hope for feminists still hoping to break the highest of glass ceilings may give it another go. That’s right — Hillary Clinton is reportedly gearing up for White House bid number three. “Get ready for Hillary Clinton 4.0,” wrote her longtime adviser Mark Penn. “More than 30 years in the making, this new version of Mrs. Clinton, when she runs for president in 2020, will come full circle — back to the universal-health-care-promoting progressive firebrand of 1994.”

We don’t know whether to cringe or celebrate.

In her lucrative book9, Michelle Obama bitterly lamented Clinton’s 2016 loss: “I will always wonder about what led so many, women in particular, to reject an exceptionally qualified female candidate and instead choose a misogynist as their president.”

Could it be that Trump’s policies better represented these women than Clinton’s “stand by her man” victim-blaming?

That may not continue, though. If Clinton does indeed run again, the strategy is simple: Demos will run 10 candidates so that, after the primary, they can combine all those disparate constituents into one “anger, fear, and hate” constituency, with women as a key piece of the coalition. The Wall Street Journal notes one ominous sign10: “This Election Day produced the largest gender gap ever: Women made up 52% of the electorate nationwide and favored Democratic candidates over Republicans by an 18 point margin.”

GOOD NEWS

Toyota to Replace Burnt Tundra as a Thank You to Brave Nurse27

If you’re a Californian, the past few days have been an absolute nightmare28, as people have been uprooted out of their homes as fires ravage their communities from all sides. But, with all tragedies, heroes are born and Nurse Allyn Pierce was definitely one of them. Even though his Toyota Tundra was literally burnt on all sides, Nurse Pierce drove his Tundra through the fire, back to his post where he and countless numbers of nurses, doctors, and medical professionals assisted those that were left behind in Paradise, Calif.

Nurse Allyn Pierce is OK, but, he lost his home and although his Toyota Tundra still runs and drives, the exterior suffered some serious fire damage.

FEATURED ANALYSIS
China’s Middle Kingdom Wants to Be on Top34

John J. Bastiat

Anyone who thinks China doesn’t take “the long view” has never seen the Great Wall. It is this long view that permeates every fiber of Communist leadership in the once-great empire known as the “Middle Kingdom.” Fabled as the land chosen by destiny to be situated in both the physical and metaphysical center of the world, it was surrounded on all sides by natural barriers and “uncivilized” enemies. Indeed, the Great Wall was built to stop constant invasion from these unwashed hordes. But the Middle Kingdom has since had a comeuppance — actually, many — calling into question China’s once-preeminent status. The message from Xi Jinping, president of the grossly misnamed People’s Republic of China (PRC), to the rest of Planet Earth on how it should view China is, “We’re Number One: Get used to it.”

Beijing has conveyed this message implicitly and explicitly over the course of the past two decades. For example, China’s military budget has been rising exponentially — from less than $10 billion in current dollars to almost $200 billion projected in 2018, with double-digit budget increases year-over-year. China’s aggressions — especially those within its region of influence — have likewise seen dramatic upticks that have only recently been addressed.

Until the arrival of the Trump administration, for example, China’s imperial expansions35 in the South and East China Seas remained unchecked, with nations’ territorial waters blatantly violated by offshore oil exploration rigs protected by the Chinese navy (as with Vietnam), or else losing territory outright through dredging and “island-making” operations (such as those suffered by the Philippines). These “islands,” dredged into existence from nowhere, are then paved with airstrips, equipped with military support, and declared the “sovereign” territory of China. China uses these faux islands as instrumentalities through which to bully other nations (notably the U.S.), by demanding foreign-flagged vessels gain permission to enter China’s “territorial waters” — a buzzword commonly used in international law but misappropriated by China in its “sea-grab” for what would otherwise be freely navigable international waters. China’s goal, of course, is regional hegemony — at least, this is China’s ostensible starting point.

China’s real endgame is parity with, if not outright superiority to, the U.S. as a superpower. But China is also well aware that it still lags the U.S. in both economic power and military might. Undeterred, China continues unabated its military buildup, all while testing U.S. resolve indirectly and globally through covert cyber warfare and intellectual property theft, challenges in the international waters of the South and East China Seas, and enemy-of-my-enemy economic and military alliances.

In September 2015, China and the U.S. jointly pledged that neither nation would “conduct or knowingly support cyber-enabled theft of intellectual property, including trade secrets or other confidential business information for commercial advantage.” For China, that pledge lasted roughly a week. Just kidding: It was being broken by China even as it was being announced on the lawn of the White House Rose Garden. Indictments two weeks ago against Chinese industrial espionage agents and a Chinese state-owned company for stealing sophisticated memory chip technology from U.S. semiconductor manufacturer Micron were only the latest in a host of state-sponsored industrial espionage operations against the U.S.

Moreover, China has been quietly acquiring seaports, shipping and supply depots, and communication and energy facilities in more than a dozen countries globally, and it is accelerating its acquisition pace. U.S. military vessels are well aware they will be subject to Chinese cyber-surveillance if they dock at ports controlled by Chinese companies, and this threat poses a deterrent to the scope of U.S. naval operations. This deterrent was purposefully crafted under China’s “anti-access/area denial” strategy (commonly referred to as “A2/AD”), a strategy designed to undermine U.S. military power without directly confronting the U.S. Navy.

Fortunately, albeit belatedly, the U.S. is finally sobering to the realization that it may have erred in welcoming the unholy marriage of capitalism with communism in China. The hostile hybrid hardly resulted in the opening of China to trade and Liberty as hoped for, but rather resulted in the economic analog of giving an alcoholic a booze-for-life membership card: Whatever the ultimate outcome, things certainly aren’t going to become better in the short run.

Some see the latest trade war36 as an attempt by the U.S. to put a governor on the engine of China’s martial buildup, and some evidence to that effect seems to exist. More accurately, however, is the fact that the U.S. is simply tired of China’s blatant flouting of its status as “member-in-good-standing” in the World Trade Organization (WTO), through such anti-free-trade measures as demanding foreign industries “partner” with Chinese agent companies whose primary goal is to steal intellectual property for the good of the PRC. China’s overt contempt for adverse rulings from the WTO — as well as the courts of countless nations and other international administrative and judicial bodies — hasn’t exactly overwhelmed the U.S. with warm fuzzies about China’s ability to play well with others in the economic sandbox, either.

Most military experts estimate China is still 10-15 years away from approaching U.S. military capability. While the “experts” are very often wrong — especially when it comes to predicting the future, given the enormous number of variables in play — at least for the time being China also believes it isn’t quite there yet. Otherwise, based on its belligerent activities over at least the last decade, China would likely already have started a hot war with us somewhere — say, Taiwan, for instance, which of course China considers part of its territory, much to the trepidation of the Taiwanese. That the U.S. recognizes the threat China’s indirect warfare method poses to world order and Liberty is finally evident. Whether the U.S. has the backbone, might, and savvy to deal with this threat remains an open question.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Dennis Prager: “Emile Ratelband, a 69-year-old motivational speaker in the Netherlands, has petitioned a Dutch court for permission to change his legal age by altering his birth certificate to show he was born 20 years later than he really was — to legally make him 49 rather than 69 years old. … Now, what exactly is wrong with Ratelband’s argument? If sex doesn’t objectively exist, why does age? … We are living in a time of intellectual and moral chaos. The political movement known as leftism or progressivism (not liberalism) is first and foremost a chaotic force. And nowhere is that chaos more evident than in the left’s attempt to end the reality that the human being is created either male or female. That is ‘binary’ nonsense, according to the left. Thus, a New York Times headline last month read ‘Anatomy Does Not Determine Gender, Experts Say.’ … The judges in the Netherlands will likely rule against [Ratelband]. But if they believe sex has no objective reality, that the sex on one’s birth certificate can be changed, on what grounds can they rule that the date of birth cannot be changed? The answer is there are no such grounds. But only for the time being — because the day The New York Times publishes an article titled ‘The Idea That a Person’s Age Is Determined by Their Date of Birth Is Not True,’ age, too, will become subjective.”

SHORT CUTS

For the record: “Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the U.S., China and Russia. But it was Germany in World Wars One & Two — How did that work out for France? They were starting to learn German in Paris before the U.S. came along. Pay for NATO or not!” —Donald Trump responding to the French president’s comments about nationalism37

Upright: “[President Trump’s] style is not my style. … It’s never how I would conduct myself. But … conservatives can hold multiple ideas in their head at the same time. We can be like, ‘Wow, he shouldn’t have tweeted that,’ and still support him. … You can disapprove of what the president says every day, or that day, and still support his broader agenda.” —Representative-elect Dan Crenshaw

Who’s up for Round 2? “Reagan won 49 states in his re-election in 1984. It’s hard to imagine any person being able to do that again… well, maybe Trump if Hillary runs again.” —Frank Fleming

Observations: “What’s the difference between bogus claims that Trump conspired with Russians to interfere with an election & Democratic candidates’ lawyers advocating that illegal immigrants’ votes be counted? Answer: the latter is actually COLLUSION.” —David Limbaugh

Dezinformatziya: “Brenda Snipes in Broward County is a Republican. … She’s hardly a Democratic official, or someone doing the bidding of the Democratic candidates there.” —MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell (Snipes, the Broward election supervisor, is and has always been a leftist Democrat.)

Those “stupid” women… “I will always wonder about what led so many, women in particular, to reject an exceptionally qualified female candidate and instead choose a misogynist as their president.” —Michelle Obama (Because conservative women are not emotionally incontinent dupes8.)

Vile and graphic: “Fox News jerks the President off every single day. It is political gotcha21 on that channel. That’s right. I said it.” —CNN political commentator Tara Setmayer

And last… “It strikes me as a bit ridiculous that Amazon went through all that theater only to choose NYC and Northern Virginia. On the upside, we found out which local and state governments would shamelessly whore themselves for a corporation and waste taxpayer money.” —Erick Erickson
