THE FOUNDATION

“A good moral character is the first essential in a man, and that the habits contracted at your age are generally indelible, and your conduct here may stamp your character through life. It is therefore highly important that you should endeavor not only to be learned but virtuous.” —George Washington (1790)

IN TODAY’S EDITION

More than 300 Catholic priests abused more than 1,000 kids.
Media overlooks an Islamist compound in America.
The Rainbow Mafia is attacking its own Hollywood allies.
Abuse allegations against Keith Ellison have little impact.
Good news: Deregulation is saving a ton of money.
Daily Features: Top Headlines, Memes, Cartoons, Columnists, and Short Cuts.

IN BRIEF
The Outrageous Catholic Cover-Up of Sexual Abuse1

Nate Jackson

In arguably the most heart-wrenching and utterly outrageous story of the #MeToo era, an 884-page grand jury report2 out of Pennsylvania reveals that 301 “predator priests” in six dioceses across the state sexually abused at least a thousand boys and girls over the last 70 years. The 1,000 victims are just the ones for whom hard evidence exists, meaning there were likely many, many more abuse victims.

“The abuse scarred every diocese,” Pennsylvania state Attorney General Josh Shapiro said. “The cover-up was sophisticated. And all the while, church leadership kept records of the abuse.” In fact, he added, “These documents, from the diocese’s own ‘secret archives,’ formed the backbone of this investigation.” Shapiro concluded, “The church protected the institution at all costs.”

The details are so sordid3 that we won’t repeat them here in a family publication. But the report, which builds upon previous investigations of such scandals in Boston and Philadelphia, states, “All victims were brushed aside, in every part of the state, by church leaders who preferred to protect the abusers and their institution above all. The main thing was not to help children, but to avoid scandal. Priests were raping little boys and girls and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing: they hid it all.”

The Associated Press reports4, “One senior American church official named in the grand jury report is Cardinal Donald Wuerl, who leads the Washington archdiocese, for allegedly helping to protect abusive priests when he was Pittsburgh’s bishop.” But charges have been filed against just two of the 301 accused. More than two dozen names were redacted in the report due to challenges from the Church. Many of the alleged offenders have retired or were dismissed, and in almost every case the statute of limitations has run out. More than 100 of the accused priests are deceased, though perhaps we can take solace in knowing that they are likely receiving their just and eternal punishment.

A few thoughts.

There are many faithful Christians in the Catholic Church, but the institution itself is largely as corrupt and broken as it was at the time of the Reformation 500 years ago5. There must be a careful and systematic purge of offenders and a program of real reform to prevent this type of abuse in the future. Unfortunately, we would argue the Catholic Church’s very policy of a celibate priesthood feeds this behavior by prohibiting inherently sexual beings a proper outlet for their desires in a Biblical marriage of a man to a woman. Combine that with the Church’s practice of handling homosexuals by putting them in celibate positions of power over young boys and abuse is bound to happen. (Boy Scouts of America, take note6.)

It’s worth repeating what our own Robin Smith wrote Monday7 regarding Pope Francis’s declaration against the death penalty: “It’s an interesting contrast to discuss the age-old debate about capital punishment for the most heinous crimes while we await evidence of abominable crimes alleged to have been committed within the Catholic Church.”

Finally, The Resurgent’s Peter Heck writes8, “Not only have these perverted priests harmed God’s innocent children, but they have subjected the name and being of Christ to public disgrace. The Supreme Judge of the world is not ambivalent about such things.” For that we are humbled and grateful, and more than a few Catholic leaders should be terrified.

Media Overlooks an Islamist Compound in America9
Jordan Candler

A cabal of adults was detained recently by law enforcement in New Mexico and “charged with 11 felony counts of child abuse for keeping … young children, ages 1 to 15, in filthy living conditions at a compound that was literally made out of trash,” The Daily Wire reports10. Unfortunately, there’s a twist: The abuse included grooming the children to become Islamists by inciting future school shootings.

According to the Associated Press, “Siraj Ibn Wahhaj was conducting weapons training with assault rifles at the compound near the Colorado border where 11 hungry children were found in filthy conditions.” Very tellingly, said person is the son of Siraj Wahhaj — a man who Fox News explains “was named by prosecutors as an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.” Remember that when the inevitable cries of “lone wolf” begin circulating.

There’s also an extremely grisly revelation involving a deceased child. NBC says11, “The young boy whose remains were found … died in a religious ritual conducted because his father believed he was possessed by demons. … [The child] disappeared from his home in Georgia in December. A nationwide search eventually led authorities to the compound in Taos, which was set up by … Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, 40, who authorities allege had kidnapped his son.” And then apparently oversaw his death.

Judge Sarah Backus, an elected Democrat, set bail at just $20,00012 for the five defendants in the case.

Sadly, the silence regarding the reporting of this case is nearly deafening. Yes, occasional articles appear here and there, but the truth is that the coverage is orchestrated and permissibly limited. As Matt Walsh observes13, “This should be the biggest story of the year so far.” But the Islamic angle forbids it from being placed under a needed spotlight, as it most assuredly would be if the perpetrators were non-Muslim and Westerners. Given the media hoopla14 surrounding a couple dozen “alt-right” protesters over the weekend, it’s not a stretch to reach that conclusion. Consequently, a harrowing fact is being sanitized: The Islamic practices of slavery, brainwashing, and jihad commonly seen in the Middle East are happening right here on American soil. Religion of Peace™ indeed.

FEATURED ANALYSIS
Rainbow Mafia Attacks Hollywood Allies31

Louis DeBroux

With every day that passes it becomes more clear that the perpetually offended members of the Rainbow Mafia will never be satisfied. They will never stop agitating, and they will always be outraged. Their outrage was initially focused on Christians, conservatives, and Republicans, but they have now begun to turn on themselves.

To understand the constantly morphing demands of the progressive Left, one must understand the concept of “intersectionality32.” This is sort of a hierarchy of victimhood, in which your moral superiority is determined not by your actions or your character but by your race, sex, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, etc. So if you are a poor, black, transgender woman, then your moral superiority is unquestioned, whereas if you are a white, heterosexual, Christian male… well, your right to even exist is highly questionable.

The fight for “LGBT equality” began with the effort to secure civil unions for homosexuals. Then came the demand for “marriage equality” despite the fact that marriage, for the thousands of years of human history, has been always and everywhere about bringing children into the world, rather than a governmental seal of approval for a romantic relationship. Once the right to same-sex “marriage” was secured, the Rainbow Mafia began harassing religious business owners, demanding they provide services for same-sex ceremonies in violation of their deeply held religious beliefs under threat of prosecution, government-mandated indoctrination, and the loss of their businesses.

The homosexual agenda has nothing to do with “equality” or “tolerance” and everything to do with using government force to beat into submission those who don’t share these aberrant views.

Alas, even supporters of the LGBT movement are now in the crosshairs of the Rainbow Mafia. In recent months, several high-profile actresses and actors have felt the wrath of the gay and trans activists. Scarlett Johansson33, long an ally of the LGBT community, was nevertheless savaged for the unforgivable offense of agreeing to play the role of a trans man in a movie. The outrage was so intense that Johansson dutifully begged forgiveness, backed out of the project, and expressed gratitude that “this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film.”

Disney, a long-time advocate for homosexuals (hosting gay events at Disney World34 for years), has faced backlash for doing something one would think would be applauded by the LGBT cabal; namely, introducing its first major homosexual Disney character35. The offense? Having that character played by Jack Whitehall, who starts with two strikes against him by virtue of being straight and white.

If that’s a problem, there are a hundred other actors36 who need to repent.

The most recent outrage is the casting of actress Ruby Rose as character Kate Kane in The CW’s upcoming “Batwoman” TV series. This would initially seem to be a great fit. The Kane character is a Jewish lesbian37, and Rose is “gender fluid” (a person who alternates between genders). Unfortunately, Rose is not Jewish, so while her gender-fluid levels are acceptable, she’s two quarts low on the Judaism dipstick.

What makes the whole thing even more laughable is that the very essence of acting is to successfully imitate someone or something the actor is not. Yet the PC enforcers of the Rainbow Mafia now demand actors playing roles of fictional characters must themselves have the same traits as the characters they are portraying. This will be especially difficult when it comes to portraying transgender characters, considering that transgenders make up just a fraction of 1% of the population, and transgendered actors are a tiny subset of that.

Of course, if we all get to determine our sex/gender based on how we feel, then it seems the easiest solution for Johansson would have been to claim she is gender-fluid and identify as a trans man for the duration of filming the movie. That way she can just accuse her critics of being transphobic and questioning her self-declared sexual identity.

The whole thing is rapidly devolving into a form of intersectionalist insanity, and former LGBT allies are starting to turn on one another. For example, radical feminists reject trans women38 (biological males identifying as females) as actual women, and have even filed lawsuits to ban government agencies from recognizing them as such. Some LGB’s are calling for the T’s to be dropped from their club39 altogether.

Lost in all of this outrage-generating, politically correct insanity is that actual people are suffering from our collective trip down the gender-identity rabbit hole. Sex/gender is not “assigned” at birth; it is determined by the DNA of the newly created life at conception. And if every cell in a person’s body carries the XY chromosome, then that person is male, period, and indulging the fiction that a male can become a female, or vice versa, is actually cruel and harmful.

Transgenders (those suffering from gender dysphoria) have a suicide-attempt rate of more than 40% over their lifetimes (even post-surgery), as compared to less than 5% for the general population. Treating their disorder as normal, and even worthy of celebration, is making the problem worse.

Those suffering from gender dysphoria should be treated with kindness, respect40, and aided in getting the treatment they need so that their minds are not constantly at war with their bodies. To do otherwise — all while bickering over fictional TV and movie characters — is to value an ideology more than a life.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Star Parker: “Let’s recall that the unfairness that blacks had to deal with in America’s history was unequal treatment under the law. This is what needed to be fixed, and this is what was fixed in the Civil Rights Act in 1964. The problem was that liberals wanted to use their agenda not to fix the law but to change the country. And in the name of racial fairness, the era of big activist government, financed with oceans of taxpayer funds, was born. But government can’t fix anybody’s life. It can only make sure that the law protecting life, liberty and property is applied fairly and equally. The beginning of big activist government fostered the demise of personal responsibility. … Making a child is not hard to do. Raising a child and conveying the values and rules that make for a successful life and responsible adulthood is. Particularly now that popular culture largely dismisses these truths. And in black communities, politics and media is dominated by the left, whose message for them is that life is unfair because of racism and the answer is big government. … Black leaders need to start doing their job and convey that marriage, work, education and personal responsibility are the only things that will fix black America.”

SHORT CUTS

Dezinformatsiya: “President Donald Trump on Tuesday again seized on what he called a ‘terrorist attack’ in London to call for tougher anti-terror measures, even though the incident was still in the early stages of investigation.” —CNN (“Never mind that the Associated Press called the attack a ‘terrorist incident’ two hours before Trump’s tweet, while the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, called it a ‘terrorist act’ on Twitter, an hour and a half before Trump’s tweet. So now Trump is criticized for stating reported facts?” —Newsbusters)

Friendly fire: “I would have fired [Peter Strzok], too. He has rights as an employee, and those should be exhausted, but I also believe as the brother of police officers and a former prosecutor, with the stakes this high, a presidential candidate being investigated, you can’t talk that way, even if it didn’t affect the investigation.” —Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA)

“Let me remind you that when the Republicans took power when President Obama was president of the United States, what Mitch McConnell said is, ‘The most important thing we can do is to make sure he does not succeed.’ If that wasn’t a racist statement… That is unthinkable.” —House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

Non Compos Mentis: “You know, I look at the platform of a living wage and health care for all. That’s called civilized society. I don’t even know how that became socialism or Republican or Democrat. Let’s be a civilized society. … I’m not sure I even know what socialism is.” —"Christine" Hallquist, a transgender nominee vying to become governor of Vermont

And last… “Over the past 50 years, more than $16 trillion has been spent on poverty programs. The majority of those programs have simply made poverty more comfortable by giving poor people more food, health care, housing, etc. What’s needed most is to get poor people to change their behavior.” —Walter Williams
