THE FOUNDATION

“We are, heart and soul, friends to the freedom of the press. It is however, the prostituted companion of liberty, and somehow or other, we know not how, its efficient auxiliary. It follows the substance like its shade; but while a man walks erect, he may observe that his shadow is almost always in the dirt. It corrupts, it deceives, it inflames. It strips virtue of her honors, and lends to faction its wildfire and its poisoned arms, and in the end is its own enemy and the usurper’s ally, It would be easy to enlarge on its evils. They are in England, they are here, they are everywhere. It is a precious pest, and a necessary mischief, and there would be no liberty without it.” —Fisher Ames (1807)

IN BRIEF
NYT Publisher to Trump: Stop Being Divisive and Dangerous1

Nate Jackson

Some political rhetoric has become “not just divisive but increasingly dangerous.” So said New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger, not of the Leftmedia’s rabble-rousing, of course, but of President Donald Trump’s tweets. Speaking of a July 20 meeting between Sulzberger and Trump, the newspaperman said his purpose in the meeting was to “raise concerns about the president’s deeply troubling anti-press rhetoric.” In fact, he said of phrases like “fake news” and “enemy of the people” that he “told the president directly that I thought that his language was not just divisive but increasingly dangerous.”

So would that be dangerous like Rep. Maxine Waters’s angry admonition to harass Trump administration officials2? Or would it be dangerous like the Democrat/Leftmedia rhetoric that preceded the attempted murder of several Republicans3 last year? Sulzberger didn’t address either incident, so we’re left to guess — though his fellow travelers did blame Trump for the murder of five journalists4 in Maryland last month.

Trump responded to Sulzberger’s backstab, “[Ninety percent] of media coverage of my Administration is negative, despite the tremendously positive results we are achieving, it’s no surprise that confidence in the media is at an all time low!” He added, “The failing New York Times and the Amazon Washington Post do nothing but write bad stories even on very positive achievements — and they will never change!” He’s right on all counts.

He also said, “When the media — driven insane by their Trump Derangement Syndrome — reveals internal deliberations of our government, it truly puts the lives of many, not just journalists, at risk! Very unpatriotic! Freedom of the press also comes with a responsibility to report the news accurately.” And they’re not ever going to do that as leaders of the #Resistance.

Yes, Trump has a habit of using heated rhetoric, but he was absolutely right to call a few chief Leftmedia outlets our nation’s “biggest enemy5.” And as PowerLine’s John Hinderaker observes6, “Recall that it was leftists who first used the phrase ‘fake news’ in complaints about Facebook stories during the election. Trump has now co-opted ‘fake news’ and made it his own.”

Trump was elected by voters fed up with being scorned by the coastal-elite press — voters who knew no one but a brash fighter would stand up for them. Eighteen months in to his presidency, he shows no signs of moderating that fight for the sake of Sulzberger’s hurt feelings.

Bernie’s ‘Medicare for All’ Cost: $32.6 Trillion7
Thomas Gallatin

One of the central policy planks of Sen. Bernie Sanders’s 2016 campaign platform was his “Medicare for All8” plan — a plan he continues to trumpet with his newest Millennial socialist acolyte9. In short, the plan would expand the current governmental insurance plan for seniors to include all Americans. As even Sanders openly argues, it’s a means of creating de facto single-payer health care. “Health care must be recognized as a right, not a privilege,” he insists. “Every man, woman, and child in our country should be able to access the health care they need regardless of their income. The only long-term solution to America’s health care crisis is a single-payer national health care program.”

A free lunch is all fun and games until someone gets the bill.

On Monday, the Mercatus Center at George Mason University released its study10 on the overall cost of Sanders’s single-payer legislation, the “Medicare for All Act (M4A).” The study found that the “M4A would place unprecedented strain on the federal budget” — to the tune of $32.6 trillion in added cost over the first 10 years of its implementation. The Associated Press noted11 that “after taking into account current government health care financing, the study estimated that doubling all federal individual and corporate income taxes would not fully cover the additional costs.” Yikes! Study author Charles Blahous writes, “Enacting something like ‘Medicare for All’ would be a transformative change in the size of the federal government.”

Sanders was quick to push back against the study, claiming that the libertarian policy center was being bankrolled by the Koch brothers — as if that undermines the merits of its argument. “This grossly misleading and biased report is the Koch brothers’ response to the growing support in our country for a ‘Medicare for All’ program,” Sanders groused. And yet a spokesman for Sanders admitted that his office has not conducted a cost analysis on the plan. Ideology trumping reality.

But the Mercatus Center’s study isn’t the only one to conclude that Sanders’s plan would create astronomically high taxes to cover the federal costs. Kenneth Thorpe, a former health policy adviser in the Clinton administration and current professor of health policy at Emory University, authored another study that arrived at a similar conclusion. “If you are going to go in this direction, it’s going to cost the federal government $2.5 trillion to $3 trillion a year in terms of spending,” Thorpe stated. “Even though people don’t pay premiums, the tax increases are going to be enormous. There are going to be a lot of people who’ll pay more in taxes than they save on premiums.”

As Democrats continue to veer hard-left, these outright socialist polices like M4A are increasingly becoming the litmus tests candidates must embrace. But Democrats need to be forced to address the actual cost of this socialist ideology and not simply blame the Koch brothers for math they don’t like.

FEATURED ANALYSIS
Fight for the Value of Your Citizenship30

Robin Smith

Has there been a constitutional change recently that we’ve all missed? Recent news articles report that Democrats are working to allow noncitizens to cast ballots in elections around the country.

Yep. You read that correctly.

In the U.S. Constitution and our Bill of Rights, the rights guaranteed for voters are directed to citizens of the United States of America.

Yet the push to expand voting rights to noncitizens has been deemed “another good step forward” by Portland, Maine, Mayor Ethan Strimling, among too many others. Strimling is, of course, a Democrat who cites President Donald Trump and his enforcement policies as his motivation for backing such policies. But don’t think that Maine is the only locale featuring the move by leftist organizations to allow noncitizens to vote.

Across America, not surprisingly in Democrat bastions, the efforts are rooted in local municipal elections, yet the implications of local decisions have had very real consequences at the federal level.

In Maryland, according to31 The Washington Times, there are 11 small municipalities that permit noncitizen voting. Chicago and San Francisco both permit noncitizens to cast ballots in school elections and, now, the Commonwealth People’s Republic of Massachusetts may follow suit. Some want to pass a state law in response to home-rule petitions that have been signed and submitted by Amherst, Brookline, Cambridge, Newton, and Wayland. There was a hearing last Tuesday in Boston at the request of City Council Chairwomen Andrea Campbell, the goal of which was to find “ways to make city elections more inclusive.”

While Democrats rationalize that it’s just local school board races and municipal elections that are currently impacted, let’s think for just a moment. Is this not validating that noncitizens have their children in taxpayer-funded schools — consuming resources while not fully paying their tax burden? Is it not at the local level that sanctuary city laws originate to stand opposed to a collaborative effort with federal law enforcement to detain and transfer criminal illegal aliens into federal custody for arrest? Is it not also at the local level that trend-setting laws, such as those that push the minimum wage higher than the federal designation, catch on and spread?

Oh the irony: The very group of people screeching loudest about Russian election meddling is consistently and continually rejecting provisions to protect the value and integrity of elections. They oppose simple photo ID requirements while they are increasingly and brazenly working to secure voting rights for individuals who have decided to ignore current law regarding legal immigration — all in order that they can impact existing and future law. On the one hand, Democrats hide behind allegations of the “racist” disenfranchisement of potential voters by requiring voters prove their identity with a picture ID. On the other hand, they work to dilute the votes of law-abiding citizens with ballots cast by individuals who don’t respect American culture and law?

Democratic Socialists don’t respect America as the greatest nation on earth — one that affords to its citizens rights and Liberty that are the envy of the world. Today’s Democrats work to circumvent law, process, and mutual respect, whether it’s voting, speaking in public, or protecting this nation’s most valuable resource — our citizens.

Patriots, it’s time to firmly plant our energies and commitments in unity toward the effort to rid this nation of its internal enemies. Go vote for those who understand the value of the American treasure of citizenship.

MORE ANALYSIS FROM THE PATRIOT POST

Starving the Socialist/Marxist Campus Beast32 — “The gravest internal threat to this country is not illegal aliens; it is leftist professors.”
How Obama Funded an al-Qaida Affiliate33 — The Islamic Relief Agency was just another part of Obama’s malfeasance.
Dems Label Brett Kavanaugh ‘Evil,’ Sans Evidence34 — Democrats prove the only reason they oppose the SCOTUS nominee is because of Trump.
Video: Cory Booker’s Split Personality35 — He’s a man torn between darkness and light. The dichotomy is jarring.
Video: Do Ocasio-Cortez Supporters Understand Socialism?36 — Campus Reform’s Cabot Phillips asks her supporters what they think of her agenda.
Video: Who Should Have TOP SECRET Clearance?37 — Trump has been asked to cancel the security clearances of weaponized former Obama officials.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Gary Bauer: “The U.S. economy grew at a strong rate of 4.1% in the second quarter of the year. That’s the strongest economic growth in four years and one of the best quarters in the past decade. Gee, I wonder what changed? Barack Obama’s policies helped produce one of the worst economic records in American history. He is the only president since World War II to never experience a single full year of 3% economic growth. Under Obama, economic growth peaked at 2.6% and averaged around 2% per year. And we were told over and over again that this was the new normal, that a roaring economy was a thing of the past. Yet Trump came into office and did the exact opposite of what Obama did. Obama raised taxes. Trump and the Republican Congress cut them. Obama imposed massive regulations on businesses and the economy. Trump has been rolling back red tape at a record level. Obama gave us eight years of bigger and bigger government (Obamacare) and more and more pessimism. He apologized for America and attacked small business owners, telling them, ‘You didn’t build that.’ Trump came into office promising to make America great again. And just as he has done on so many other issues, Donald Trump is delivering on that promise.”

SHORT CUTS

The Gipper: “The government is not the solution. The government is the problem.”

Braying Jackass: “Here’s the bottom line: The United States was attacked. The United States was attacked by Russia. No, it wasn’t like Pearl Harbor. It was a cyberattack. It was a disinformation campaign. But we were attacked. And there’s this investigation to find out what happened. … And there are a whole bunch of people in Washington who are trying to prevent the investigation from going forward. I mean, imagine if somebody tried to prevent the investigation into how Pearl Harbor happened from going forward. You would say that person is not being not patriotic.” —CNN’s Jake Tapper

Hypocrisy: “[George] Orwell, what he wrote, it’s practically a shooting script for Donald Trump. There is a method to this, and the method is to convince people that ‘the only truth is the truth that comes from me,’ the ultimate power. … He wants to move us completely into the post-truth political era in which there’s no such thing as objective facts.” —fake newsman Dan Rather

Hyper hypocrisy: “We have a responsibility to protect our borders. All of our borders. … Democrats have been strong on that point. … When we had the 9/11 incident and the commission was formed, and … they made recommendations to protect America, but the Republicans would never take them up. And some of it was about our borders. The Republicans would never take them up.” —Nancy Pelosi

Village Idiots: “White people — including me, including you — must take into the marrow of our privileged bones the truth that ALL black people fear for their lives DAILY in America and have done so for GENERATIONS. White people DO NOT have equivalence for this fear of violence. Given those givens, we must ask our (white)selves — how ‘decent’ are we really? Not in our intent, but in our actions? In our lack of action?” —actress Anne Hathaway

And last… “Unfortunately, banning straws won’t actually stop California Democratic officials from sucking.” —Ben Shapiro
