IN BRIEF

Trump Clips Eagles’ Wings, Disinvites NFL Champs1

Nate Jackson

Donald Trump was elected in large part because normal Americans grew tired of rabid leftists calling them jingoist racists. And even if it means canceling traditional meet-and-greets with sports champions at the White House, Trump is going to stand with the American people — in this case, against the NFL’s kneeling social justice warriors. With less than 24 hours’ notice, Trump scrapped the planned ceremony to recognize the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, citing the long-running dispute over the national anthem and the small contingent of Eagles players (fewer than 10) even willing to attend.

“The Philadelphia Eagles are unable to come to the White House with their full team to be celebrated tomorrow,” Trump said in a White House statement. “They disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country. The Eagles wanted to send a smaller delegation, but the 1,000 fans planning to attend the event deserve better. These fans are still invited to the White House to be part of a different type of ceremony — one that will honor our great country, pay tribute to the heroes who fight to protect it, and loudly and proudly play the National Anthem.”

For the record, the Eagles released the only player who kneeled during a preseason game. Others stood with power fists during the season. In any case, Trump is making this is a victory lap of sorts after the NFL’s recent policy announcement2 threatening to fine teams with players who kneel for the anthem.

But Trump isn’t taking guff from any professional sports team. He uninvited the NBA champion Golden State Warriors last year (look for the same thing to happen after they win again this year). In Trump’s estimation, if millionaire celebrity sports stars are going to snub him and the country, why not return the favor? As the Washington Examiner’s Becket Adams put it3, “Donald Trump truly is the culture war president.”

Bill Clinton Defends Himself Against #MeToo4

Thomas Gallatin

“If the facts were the same today, I wouldn’t [change my decision],” Bill Clinton responded to a question posed by NBC “Today Show” interviewer Craig Melvin. Melvin asked whether the #MeToo movement would have caused Clinton to resign when his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky came to light. Clinton added, “I think I did the right thing. I defended the Constitution.”

We apologize if you just spewed coffee all over your keyboard.

Melvin set up his question by quoting from a Vanity Fair op-ed5 Lewinsky wrote earlier this year, in which she explained, “[Clinton] was my boss. He was the most powerful man on the planet. He was 27 years my senior with enough life experience to know better. He was at the time at the pinnacle of his career, while I was at my first job out of college.”

Clinton was clearly perturbed by the line of questioning, telling Melvin that he “ignored gaping facts” and suggesting that he didn’t “even know them.” But Melvin continued to press, asking if Clinton had ever apologized to Lewinsky personally. It quickly became apparent (again) that Clinton has never accepted blame for doing anything seriously wrong or immoral. Clinton argued, “You think President Kennedy should resign? Do you believe President Johnson should resign? Someone should ask you these questions because of the way you formulate the questions. I dealt with it 20 years ago, plus, and the American people — two-thirds of them stayed with me.” In other words, Other presidents had affairs while in office, and nobody cared, so why was I forced to answer for it?

As it was in back in 1998, Clinton still sees himself as the victim of a politically motivated attack. In fact, the suggestion that he should apologize to Lewinsky bothers him precisely because it implies that she was more of a victim than he was. Hence the negative answer and then the defense of his refusal to resign upon impeachment, with the added and outlandish assertion that he was defending the Constitution. You see, he’s the hero of this story, not the villain.

And while mainstream media outlets pat themselves on the back for daring to call out Clinton for his Lewinsky affair, they still willingly ignore his far more egregious record of sexual assault6. Juanita Broaddrick blasted NBC for ignoring Clinton’s abuse toward her: “This is so disgusting. Is there ANY reporter willing to ask Bill Clinton about RAPING me?” She continued, “Would the NBC TODAY show like for me to come on and talk about my RAPE by Bill Clinton since they don’t have the ‘balls’ to ask him. Oh..Wait…… you are the same Network that delayed my interview until after the scumbag’s impeachment hearing was over.”

Clinton was right about one thing: The reason he’s being questioned about Lewinsky is due to the fact that Democrats and the MSM are “frustrated that they’ve got all of these serious allegations against the current occupant of the Oval Office, and his voters don’t seem to care.” Then again, after watching Clinton get away with it because Democrats and the MSM excused his behavior, many Americans simply shrugged off7 the accusations against Donald Trump. They’re tired of the Left’s hypocrisy and want to fight fire with fire.

What Clinton missed is that Democrats are increasingly willing to throw him under the bus so long as they can keep duping women voters8.

What’s Up With College Dropouts?28

Lewis Morris

It’s that time of year again, when college graduates head out into the world to begin new careers, and high-school graduates prepare for college and all the exciting opportunities it will open up for them.

Or so the brochures will tell you.

The fact is, college is becoming a riskier proposition for students and their families with each passing year. The job market for college graduates is extremely competitive, and many young people find themselves settling for jobs outside their field of study. Sometimes, they find themselves taking jobs that they didn’t even need a degree for in the first place just so they can start chipping away at the mountain of debt they took on to pay for that degree.

It makes many parents wonder if college is worth it. A growing number of students have determined that it’s not.

College dropout numbers are rising sharply, according to the American Enterprise Institute29. In 2016, more than 40% of all students who started a four-year program in 2010 had not completed it. Put another way, close to two million students who begin college this fall will drop out before they earn a degree. Public two-year colleges have it even worse. Only 26% of full-time, first-time students will complete their degree within three years.

The decreasing likelihood of a college degree paying off and the increasing possibility that a student may not even finish college should make parents wary about blindly submitting their children to the college experience.

Leftists like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have pushed the idea that college is the be-all-end-all for getting ahead in life. The higher education industry (let’s face it, it is an industry) has happily embraced the idea. Together, the Left and colleges and universities, which are overwhelmingly run by the Left30, have convinced parents that if their kids don’t go to post-secondary school, then they will be losers. Thus the socialists’ proposal for “free college.”

Leftists want all Americans going through college so that they can be further indoctrinated. The colleges want the money. It’s quite a deal they’ve struck.

Along the way, colleges have milked the federal government, and many states, to subsidize tuition while steadily inflating the cost of an increasingly inferior education. Leftists have turned higher education into an entitlement, arguing that (only) college educated people are good for the country, so the country should help fund their education. And with taxpayers footing the bill, there is no end to how high leftists will push tuition costs. Look at what they’ve done with every other taxpayer-funded entitlement.

Having an educated workforce is good for the economy. People who graduate with a degree in science or engineering are very likely to find work early and contribute significantly to society. But what about those who majored in diversity studies or social justice? Where’s the market for those jobs?

Bryan Caplan31, author of The Case Against Education and economics professor at George Mason University, argues that college has become a scam.

“Just because it is lucrative for an individual doesn’t mean it’s a good idea for a country,” Caplan says of college. When most everyone goes to college, “you just raise the bar. Imagine you’re at a concert, and you want to see better. Stand up and of course you’ll see better. But if everyone stands up, you just block each other’s views.”

College graduates are having a tough time finding jobs, but that doesn’t mean that the job market is bad. It just means that all these potential workers are crowding into fields where there’s already a glut of talent.

The manufacturing sector is growing and looking for workers, and these are jobs that can be secured with vocational training that is significantly less costly than a college degree. Learning can be done anywhere at any time.

“If you want to go to Princeton, you don’t have to apply,” says Caplan. “Just move to the town and start attending classes.”

While we don’t necessarily endorse crashing college classes for free, Caplan makes a good point. Information on subjects you want to learn more about can be found online or at the local library or practically anywhere. But college students looking to start a career need to be practical about how they spend their time and money. Go where the jobs are, not where your passion leads you32.

OPINION IN BRIEF

John Sparks: “There is reason to question the full extent of exactly what [Monday’s Supreme Court] opinion means. Does it mean that if the Colorado commissioners had been more restrained in their public statements and more circumspect about how they conducted themselves during public hearings that a majority of justices might have viewed a decision against Phillips as defensible? And what about the right of free speech which Phillips raised by pointing out that by being forced to bake a cake in these circumstances he was being compelled to speak a message provided by the government or another person with which he strongly disagreed? The ‘compelled speech doctrine’ (W. Va. State Board of Education v. Barnett), which remains frequently cited after 75 years of use, was essentially ignored by the Court in the majority opinion. One can rejoice that baker Phillips is finally allowed to return to his cake-making for opposite-sex couples planning weddings. However, for those other providers of goods and services — photographers and florists, for example — who observe religious limits on how or whom they can serve, this decision leaves them in the murky waters of uncertainty.”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” —Aristotle (384-322 BC)

For the record: “He was my boss. He was the most powerful man on the planet. He was 27 years my senior with enough life experience to know better. He was at the time at the pinnacle of his career, while I was at my first job out of college.” —Monica Lewinsky on Bill Clinton, who is making the rounds this week saying justice prevailed in this case

Great question: “Is there ANY reporter willing to ask Bill Clinton about RAPING me?” —Juanita Broaddrick

Alpha Jackass: “I wish that I didn’t suspect that the prolonged, poorly explained public absence of Melania Trump could be about concealing abuse. I wish that it was a ludicrous prospect. I wish that [Donald Trump] wasn’t a man with a history of abusing women, including those to whom he is married.” —Rolling Stone’s Jamil Smith

Progressive bromides: “Republicans are told ‘read the Wall Street Journal, play golf, and talk about pro sports.’ The men especially are all programmed a certain way. They don’t have too many outliers, Republicans. They all behave basically the same.” —MSNBC’s Chris Matthews

Braying Jackass: “Joy Behar apologized on the air [for what] she said … about Mike Pence. By the way, Mike Pence’s Christianity? She’s right.” —radio host Bill Press

Caution, comrades: “You know, we talk about this blue wave. I think there’s going to be a blue wave, but I think the Democrats should understand that blue wave is going to be running headlong into this gerrymandered system. The question is whether or not that blue wave will actually reach the shore.” —Eric Holder

And last… “Women’s March founder: Everybody has a right to exist! Except Israel. Nancy Pelosi: Every life has dignity and value! Except unborn lives. LGBTQ: Everybody has a right to live their authentic lives! Except Christians.” —Liz Wheeler
