THE FOUNDATION

“Nothing is so contagious as opinion, especially on questions which, being susceptible of very different glosses, beget in the mind a distrust of itself.” —James Madison (1790)

TOP RIGHT HOOKS

DNC Lowlights, Day 11

As we did with last week’s GOP convention, we’ve culled the most noteworthy blatherings of the DNC speakers. This time, however, we’ll offer a few observations. Day 1 featured Michelle Obama, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

Michelle Obama:

“We insist that the hateful language from public figures on television does not represent the true nature of this country. We explain [to our girls] when someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you don’t stoop to that level. No. Our motto is: When they go low, we go high.”

Among examples too numerous to recount here, Barack Obama once belittled conservatives who “get bitter, they cling to guns or religion.” He also said his supporters need to “argue [with Republicans] and get in their face.” And who can forget the time he warned, “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.” Is that taking the high road?

“I will never forget that winter morning as I watched our girls, just seven and ten years old, pile into those black SUVs with all those big men with guns.”

Ah, so guns do serve a purpose…

“When [Hillary Clinton] didn’t win the nomination eight years ago, she didn’t get angry or disillusioned. Hillary did not pack up and go home. Because as a true public servant, Hillary knows that this is so much bigger than her own desires and disappointments.”

This was simultaneously an admonishment for disillusioned Bernie Sanders supporters and a complete fairy tale rendering of Clinton. Hillary’s sole objective in life for the last 25 years has been to win the White House for herself, and everything she does is calculated to achieve that end.

“Don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great — that somehow we need to make it great again. Because this, right now, is the greatest country on earth.”

Flashback to 2008: “For the first time in my adult lifetime I’m really proud of my country.” —Michelle Obama

And it was her husband who’s led the “fundamental transformation” of America. Why was that necessary if they thought it was already great? Sanders supporters holding signs reading, “America was NEVER great” likewise object to Michelle’s characterization, and accurately display leftism in a nutshell.

Elizabeth Warren:

“Look around. Americans bust their tails, some working two or three jobs, but wages stay flat. Meanwhile, the basic costs of making it from month to month keep going up. Housing, health care, child care — costs are out of sight. Young people are getting crushed by student loans. Working people are in debt. Seniors can’t stretch a Social Security check to cover the basics. And even families who are OK today worry that it could all fall apart tomorrow. This. Is. Not. Right!”

What a picture of Obama’s America. By all means, let’s elect Hillary to continue it.

“People get it: the system is rigged.”

    Sanders supporters sure get it.

“Donald Trump’s America [is] an America of fear and hate. An America where we all break apart. Whites against blacks and Latinos. Christians against Muslims and Jews. Straight against gay. Everyone against immigrants. Race, religion, heritage, gender, the more factions the better. … When we turn on each other, we can’t unite to fight back against a rigged system.”

Actually, that’s a far better description of Democrats' America. Bottom line for Warren: The Leftmedia called Trump’s convention speech “dark,” but it’s hard to imagine a bleaker picture than the divided, racist, rigged and corrupt America she described. And she and her party want more of it, not less.

Bernie Sanders:

“Together, my friends, we have begun a political revolution to transform America, and that revolution — our revolution — continues.”

He obviously didn’t get Michelle’s memo about America already being great.

“This election is about ending the 40-year decline of our middle class — the reality that 47 million men, women and children live in poverty. It is about understanding that if we do not transform our economy, our younger generation will likely have a lower standard of living than their parents. This election is about ending the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality that we currently experience, the worst it has been since 1928. It is not moral, not acceptable and not sustainable that the top one-tenth of 1% now own almost as much wealth as the bottom 90%, or that the top 1% in recent years has earned 85% of all new income. That is unacceptable. That must change.”

Again, does this bleak picture of Obama’s America merit a third term?

DNC to Bernie: Sorry Not Sorry2

As the results of the hacked DNC servers finally came to bear last week with WikiLeaks' release of DNC emails3, Democrat leaders found themselves scrambling to control the damage. So far it has resulted in the resignation of Debbie Wasserman Schultz and now this lame apology to Bernie Sanders:

“On behalf of everyone at the DNC, we want to offer a deep and sincere apology to Senator Sanders, his supporters, and the entire Democratic party for inexcusable remarks made over email. These comments do not reflect the values of the DNC or our steadfast commitment to neutrality during the nominating process. The DNC does not — and will not — tolerate disrespectful language exhibited toward our candidates. Individual staffers have also rightfully apologized for their comments, and the DNC is taking appropriate actions to ensure it never happens again.

We are embarking on a convention today that — thanks to the great efforts of Secretary Clinton, her team, Senator Sanders, his team, and the entire Democratic Party — will show a forward-thinking and optimistic vision for America, as compared to the dark and pessimistic vision that the GOP presented last week in Cleveland. Our focus is on electing Hillary Clinton, Tim Kaine and Democrats across the country, thanks to Democratic Party that is strong, unified, and poised for victory in November.”

What is strikingly absent from this “apology” is any substantive mention of the central issue. Are Sanders supporters up in arms over “disrespectful language,” or over the rigged system? The fact is the WikiLeaks emails exposed that the Democrat nomination process had been rigged for Hillary from the beginning, confirming the worst suspicions of Sanders voters. How ironic that the party that calls itself “Democratic” is so un-democratic when it comes to choosing a presidential nominee.

Social Media and Search Engines: Caveat Emptor!4

As the Democrat Convention kicked off Monday in Philadelphia, a mysterious issue transpired online. When searchers on Google typed “Hillary Clinton” and then began typing the letters c-r-i, the autocomplete suggestions presented were “Hillary Clinton crime reform,” “Hillary Clinton crisis,” and “Hillary Clinton criticizes Obama 2008.” Meanwhile, Bing’s and Yahoo’s autocomplete suggestions returned “Hillary Clinton crime.” Was Google attempting to divert searchers from negative stories on Hillary Clinton?

Google responded, “The autocomplete algorithm is designed to avoid completing a search for a person’s name with terms that are offensive or disparaging. … We made this change a while ago following feedback that Autocomplete too often predicted offensive, hurtful or inappropriate queries about people.” That may be true, but it certainly doesn’t mean that they haven’t selected certain criteria related to political preference.

Add this to Twitter’s recent pull of trending topics related to WikiLeaks' release of DNC emails3 exposing their rigging of the Democrat nomination process in favor of Clinton, as well as Facebook’s admission that they suppressed information regarding the WikiLeaks episode (on top of the conservative news censoring scandal5 two months ago) and it looks suspiciously like the world’s largest search and social network companies are in the tank for Hillary Clinton and the Democrat Party.

FEATURED RIGHT ANALYSIS
Donkeys Divided17

By Paul Albaugh

The Democrat National Convention is underway and leftists are working overtime to forge a unified front — this time to take on Donald Trump. It appears, however, that doing so this year will be harder than most. For all of their hype leading up to this week, there is no shortage of dissatisfaction with Hillary Clinton — or the Democrat Party itself.

The convention began with no visible American flags (there was, however, a Palestinian flag) and the crowd booing during the opening prayer. There’s Democrat unity for you.

We have already seen the dysfunction of Democrats at work with the weekend revelations3 of 20,000 DNC emails. Many of those were sent from key Democrat leaders strategizing on how to undermine Bernie Sanders and sway the primary result in favor of Clinton. Of course, Democrats will pass this off as another “what difference does it make” moment. And the rhetoric coming from convention speakers will be geared toward convincing Americans that Clinton should receive the torch from Barack Obama to carry out his transformation of America.

But at this point, several well-known Democrats are having none of it. Al Gore for instance, who is a longtime “friend” of the Clintons and is a global warming alarmist extraordinaire announced that he will be unable to attend the convention due to “obligations in Tennessee.” That’s interesting because the convention has been on the calendar for four years. Furthermore, what obligations could Gore possibly have to miss all four days of the DNC? Perhaps he didn’t want to emit all of those carbon emissions from his private jet to get from Nashville to Philadelphia. Right…

Instead, Gore will reportedly make his formal endorsement of Clinton toward the end of the convention, but from a distance.

Much was made of missing Republicans at last week’s GOP convention, but Gore’s absence is significant. He was Bill’s vice president — how could he miss Hillary’s coronation?

Bernie Sanders, who addressed the delegates ahead of the convention, attempted to rally his supporters to unify for Hillary. “Brothers and sisters, this is the real world that we live in,” Sanders said. He was drowned out by loud boos from the crowd of delegates. He then tried to turn the conversation toward Trump, whom he claims has “insulted women and Africans.” But that didn’t work either as the crowd grew even more rowdy and started a pro-Bernie chant.

Almost every mention of Clinton’s name was reportedly18 met with chants of Bernie! Bernie! Bernie! Talk about awkward. Here you have the Democrat Convention to nominate Clinton and the crowd is cheering for Bernie. We suppose that if Clinton didn’t “feel the Bern” during the primaries, then she does now.

For all of signs of disunity at the Republican Convention, the Democrats have started out worse. Cruz may have been booed at the RNC for not endorsing Trump, but there weren’t other people chanting his name.

Then there is disgraced outgoing DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was booed by her own delegation despite her attempt to appease the crowd by handing the gavel to Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. It’s unclear whether the boos were directed toward Schultz because of her involvement with emails undermining Sanders, or if they were directed toward the Baltimore mayor, who is best known for inciting race riots19 over a criminal’s death. Ok, we kid — it was completely clear.

As for the DNC emails, the FBI is investigating the hack. While that investigation is underway and information is limited, Democrats are pointing fingers at Russia for “helping Republicans.” At least that is the political theory that Hillary “Russian Reset” Clinton wants everyone to believe.

One irony of the claims against Russia shouldn’t be lost. Clinton boasting of her “reset” only to complain about political interference is rich enough, but consider that Obama sent money and personnel to Israel last year in an effort to help defeat Benjamin Netanyahu — an actual ally. Obama also tried to influence the Brexit vote. Besides, remember Obama’s line about “more flexibility” in advance of the 2012 election? The Russians would love to extend the Obama presidency.

There is a lot of disunity among Democrats — many of their voters are disenfranchised by their party “leaders” and many of the party members are completely dissatisfied that Clinton is going to be the nominee. Clinton is well aware of this, so a deflection from reality is her remedy. Come to think of it, “Deflection From Reality” pretty much describes the entire party.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Thomas Sowell: “If black lives matter at all to the Obama administration, they obviously don’t matter as much as black votes that can be won by posing as defenders of blacks, even in situations where defenders of thugs are destroying black children’s futures. Even the thugs themselves will be worse off in the long run, if somebody does not put a stop to behavior that can lead them to prison as adults. Hillary Clinton plays the same political game of posing as a defender of blacks from enemies threatening them on all sides, as she tries to win an election that would amount to a third term of the Obama administration’s policies — most of which have left blacks worse off than before Obama took office. The ancient phrase, ‘By their fruits ye shall know them’ has been replaced by the current notion that by their rhetoric you should judge them — and vote for them. One of the key questions this election year is whether black lives matter more than black votes that can be won by racial charades that undermine and endanger those lives. The answer to that question will affect all Americans, because racial turmoil is to no one’s interest, except some politicians and race hustlers.”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “Character assassination is at once easier and surer than physical assault; and it involves far less risk for the assassin. It leaves him free to commit the same deed over and over again, and may, indeed, win him the honors of a hero in the country of his victims.” —Alan Barth (1906-1979)

Demo-gogues: “I actually think that honesty is not overrated. I think it is absolutely necessary, because the trust you have with the American people is currency that can get depleted and is hard to build back up.” —Barack Obama

Setting a low bar: “I feel as if I’m a better president than I’ve ever been.” —Barack Obama

Upright: “Hillary Clinton can harp all she wants to about the Republicans' ‘darkness,’ but her evidence of our darkness is that we are pointing out the darkness of the Democrats' policies and record. Pointing out darkness is not darkness. It is our patriotic duty to contrast that darkness with the luminous potential of a strong, prosperous and free America — an America that Democrats have forsaken.” —David Limbaugh

Good questions: “If the Russians had the DNC emails, did they also have Hillary’s secretary of state emails from her private server? And if [the Russians] released them to WikiLeaks, that could really be the end of her candidacy.” —former Clinton operative Dick Morris

Divide and conquer: “It might ma[ke] no difference, but for [Kentucky] and [West Virginia] can we get someone to ask his belief? Does he believe in a God. He had skated on saying he has a Jewish heritage. I think I read he is an atheist. This could make several [percentage] points difference. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist.” —DNC chief financial officer Brad Marshall in a May email that was leaked

And last… “Seems like Democratic convention will go completely smoothly so long as no one mentions Hillary Clinton’s name from the podium.” —Rich Lowry
