THE FOUNDATION
“It is an object of vast magnitude that systems of education should be adopted and pursued which may not only diffuse a knowledge of the sciences but may implant in the minds of the American youth the principles of virtue and of liberty and inspire them with just and liberal ideas of government and with an inviolable attachment to their own country.” —Noah Webster, On Education of Youth in America, 1788
TOP RIGHT HOOKS
County Clerk Jailed for Contempt, Hypocrisy Abounds1
Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis2 has been jailed after being charged with contempt of court. She refused to issue any marriage licenses in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decree legalizing same-sex marriage. As an official of the secular state, Davis, a registered Democrat, has a duty to ensure the state fulfills its lawful obligations, though her conscience objections stem from her name appearing on every license whether she signs it or not. And her case brought the hypocrites crawling out of the woodwork.
Among the vindictive and hypocritical statements from officials who should be following and not just espousing the virtues of Rule of Law, Barack Obama’s spokesman Josh Earnest opined, “The success of our democracy depends on the Rule of Law. And there is no public official that is above the Rule of Law. Certainly not the president of the United States, but neither is the Rowan County clerk. That’s a principle that is enshrined in our Constitution.” Earnest is, of course, the mouthpiece of the most lawless president in U.S. history — a president whose actions and policies have so far been struck down more than 20 times by 9-0 Supreme Court decisions. And where was Earnest when, for example, Obama refused to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act?
Not to be left out, Hillary Clinton wrote3, “Marriage equality is the law of the land. Officials should be held to their duty to uphold the law — end of story.” Aren’t there laws against mishandling classified information and obstructing justice? The hypocrisy of Obama and Clinton is astounding if completely predictable.
Do Black Jobs Matter?4
The numbers in the Bureau of Labor Statistics' August jobs report5 were disheartening. Economists hoped the economy had added 220,000 jobs in August. Instead, it added 173,000. Sure, the unemployment rate slid down 0.2 points to 5.1%, but the number disguised an untold tale of two economies, one for whites and the other for black America. The unemployment rate for white workers was at 4.4% for August, a drop of 0.2 points from July. But the unemployment rate for black workers is more than double that at 9.5%. And that’s up from 9.1% In July. While white workers were hired and returned to work in this struggling economy, black workers essentially face the same unemployment rate as they did before the Obama “recovery” began — 10.1%6 in 2008. Democrats can pontificate about how black lives matter and how policing needs to change, but for lasting change to occur blacks lives need black jobs. Could it be that the educational system has failed to prepare millions of workers for the shifts in the national and global economy? One thing’s clear: The Left’s policies are the wrong solution. The promise of raising the minimum wage — thus raising the cost for employers to add more jobs — on top of the influx of low-skilled labor through lax immigration enforcement endangers the job security of this struggling demographic and key Democrat constituency. Will blacks notice?
‘Erasing Hate’ Campaign Seeks Purge of All Things Confederate7
And you thought the controversy over the Confederate flag8 had passed. The Southern Poverty Law Center ostensibly tracks “hate groups” but is itself an über-leftwing atheist organization with its own hateful agenda. The SPLC is now soliciting help from the public in mapping all Confederate flags, monuments, memorials, street names, parks, mascots and any other example of Confederate memory as part of its “Erasing Hate” campaign. “The Confederate flag doesn’t just represent Southern ‘heritage,’” insists SPLC Founder Morris Dees. “It’s a deeply divisive symbol used by racist groups — one that was raised above state capitols in the Deep South during the civil rights movement to show that they stood for white supremacy. There’s no place for this or other symbols of the Confederacy in our public spaces.” Aside from the well-publicized removal of the flag from the South Carolina state capitol grounds, leftists have already targeted statues and even the graves of Confederate soldiers for removal. We’re still waiting for the SPLC to demand the removal of the rainbow flag from public display after a deranged black homosexual murdered two white journalists on live TV9.
FEATURED RIGHT ANALYSIS
Democrat Admits Gun Control Won’t Work, Pushes It Anyway10
By Lewis Morris
Last week’s murder9 of reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward by a psychologically damaged former coworker inspired the nation’s gun grabbers to renew their attack on the Second Amendment. That’s especially true given the killer was a black homosexual, because the Left no longer has a flag to ban7 — the rainbow flag found in the killer’s apartment is protected. So once again, we’re treated to a whole host of arguments about firearms that have been disproven by facts. But leftists aren’t the type of people who let facts get in the way of their goals.
A recent CNN interview with Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy11 of Connecticut is a prime example of just how anti-Second Amendment zealots think — though “think” is too generous a word.
Murphy lamented that Congress has done nothing about gun violence. “I believe that we have become complicit in these murders,” he complained. But by “we,” of course, Murphy means Republicans. “I’m speaking directly to the Republican leadership of the House and the Senate,” he lectured. “They should be bringing anti-gun violence bills to the floor.”
Murphy strides right over one of the fundamental flaws about the argument for tougher gun legislation. Many of the mass shootings that take place are carried out in states and cities that have the strictest gun laws. Take Chicago, for example, or Washington, DC, itself. On the other end of the spectrum, states with lax gun laws also have the lowest homicide rates.
Vermont and Utah12 both received an “F” from the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence for their loose gun restrictions. Yet these states have the third- and fourth-lowest homicide rates in the country, respectively. Shouldn’t these states receive an “A” from the LCPGV? After all, they seem to have done a pretty good job of preventing gun violence.
Which leads to another point: It’s not about the violence itself; it’s about control. Statists love centralized control — indeed, their ideology is based on it. But that kind of control is harder to enforce when private citizens are armed.
Murphy also takes to task former Virginia governor and Republican presidential candidate Jim Gilmore for stating an obvious point: The problem is not guns but reforming our mental health system. Gilmore and many others have connected the dots between mass shootings and killers with psychological problems. Clearly, if we had a stronger grasp on helping the mentally ill, we could prevent more of these murders.
But Murphy is having none of it. “The fact is that there’s no inherent connection between mental illness and violence, and that kind of talk should stop.” This is a straw man. Murphy is implying that Gilmore claimed that all mentally ill people are violent, which of course is not the case. What is the case is that mentally ill people perpetrate many of the mass shootings that are taking place. Even Mother Jones13, the bible of the far Left, understands this.
Murphy also parrots Ezra Klein’s claim14 that we could bring the suicide rate down if there were fewer guns. Wrong again. Japan and South Korea have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the world — and some of the highest suicide rates.
Another tired claim Murphy regurgitates is the so-called gun-show loophole. This is the mysterious portal through which criminals supposedly obtain the firearms they use to commit crimes. Leftists yammer about the loophole because without that argument it becomes glaringly evident that crime isn’t reduced by taking guns away from law-abiding citizens.

A study15 conducted at the Cook County Jail among prisoners found that only 1.5% of respondents obtained their firearm at a gun store. A vast majority got it from another individual, through the black market, a gang or other unspecified connection.
The study admittedly had a small sample size, but it demonstrates something Second Amendment supporters have always known: Criminals don’t care where they get their guns, and they’re unaffected by stricter gun laws. Only law-abiding citizens are in danger when gun laws become more restrictive.
More guns do in fact lead to a safer society. Since 2007, the number of concealed carry permits in America has tripled16 to 12.8 million. Firearm production has gone up 140%17 in that time, thanks in part to our nation’s best gun salesman, Barack Obama. His anti-gun rhetoric has driven up demand for firearms like never before. And in that time, the murder rate and violent crime rate have dropped 25%. This is not a coincidence.
Finally, Murphy gave the entire game away with this comment: “I don’t think that we should expect that anything that we’re going to enact in Washington is going to stop shootings.”
So why do gun grabbers bother? Well, Murphy goes on to explain, “There’s no one legislative solution, but there are changes that will make a difference … just the action of Congress in any way, shape or form.”
In other words, leftists are going to try anything they can to bring down the Second Amendment. And we must always be ready to stop them.

OPINION IN BRIEF
David Harsanyi: “Working for the government is not an inalienable right. So Kim Davis, a county clerk in Kentucky, was wrong to refuse same-sex couples marriage licenses in her office. … Signing off on state documents is not tantamount to being forced, as bakers and photographers have been, to participate in a wedding ceremony. There are certainly bigots out there intent on coercing Christian businesses to choose between their faith and their livelihood; this isn’t one of those instances. If you want to participate in civil disobedience, don’t work for the state. But jail? Davis was taken into federal custody Thursday. She was held in contempt of court for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. She now faces potential penalties, fines and prison time. She will almost certainly be destroyed. … When Democrats say states should find ways to undermine the First Amendment by weakening the Supreme Court decision on Citizens United … they are applauded for the effort. In America, we have a city council in Denver that advocates shutting down a business such as Chick-fil-A because the CEO once took a public position against gay marriage. In this country, people who are here illegally can march in the streets to protest their station without any genuine fear of being rounded up and expelled. They are celebrated. Moreover, we have cities across this country that ignore immigration laws they don’t like and create sanctuaries from law. We have cities that ignore federal drug laws because they find them oppressive. … When Californians approved Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage, a number of officials refused to enforce the law. They were celebrated. … If we’re going to be rigid about the rule of law, let’s throw all officials who ignore it into cells. We can start with the president and work our way down.”

Insight: “A socialist is somebody who doesn’t have anything, and is ready to divide it up equally among everybody.” —George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)
Upright: “How about the Republican Party signing a loyalty oath to the voters? If there needs to be a loyalty oath here, it seems to me that the Republican Party elected officials would finally get around to signing one that they are going to be loyal to their cause and loyal to their voters.” —Rush Limbaugh
Village Idiots: “If we walk away from this agreement, given the suspicions that [Iran’s] Supreme Leader had about even entering into negotiations us, we will have proven their worst fears — that you can’t deal with the West. You can’t trust the West.” —John Kerry (Last we checked, the West isn’t the one threatening to radioactively annihilate its enemies.)

Double standards: “Lois Lerner goes on paid administrative leave from the IRS, but Kentucky clerk Kim Davis goes to jail?” —Carly Fiorina
And last… “At a campaign stop in Iowa, Hillary Clinton said her decision to use a private email server was ‘not the best choice.’ Finally! The perfect Hillary 2016 slogan.” —Fred Thompson
