In terms of Bibles I have with me at the moment I have:
NRSV
KJV
New Jerusalem Bible
Other bits and pieces I have are:
The History of Christian Doctrine - Louis Berkhof
A Brief History of Western Philosophy - Anthony Kenny
The Cambridge Companion to Christian Doctrine - Colin Gunton
Not Every Spirit: A Dogmatics of Disbelief - can't remember the author
The Gospel of John (2 vols) & The Death of the Messiah - Raymond Brown
I've got some commentaries on Mark & Matthew as well, but they're not as good as Brown's commentaries on John unfortunately.
I have a Latin vulgate and a NT Greek as well. And some books of mysticism - Dark Night of the Soul, Cloud of Unknowing, Revelations of Divine Love, that sort of thing.

Let's see, we have:
King James Version (Standard) (we have 2 of these)*
The New King James Version (large print - we're old)*
New Living Translation
The Scofield Reference Bible
Spurgeon's Study Bible
The Living New Testament*
The New King James (Paperback Edition)
Halley's Bible Handbook*
The Oxford Companion to the Bible
The Reader's Digest Bible

(*use these the most)
On the computer:
King James Version
The New King James
World English Bible
The Message (reference only...it's not good on it's own)
The Audio Bible
I can't remember the rest, but I have a dozen different versions on the computer, as well as 8 or so commentaries and maybe 10 or so bible "dictionaries".
A few bible study type books and other reference materials like devotionals etc.

All these Accessories. Sometimes I think it would be easier to just learn Greek and Hebrew!

For you Tibby, I think you should start with the book of Romans.

Think Philemon would be an easier place to start. Shorter book, with a wide range of spelling and grammer, I think it would be an idea start for Greek students.
I wish this College offered Greek
Oh well, there is always Rosetta Stone.

Hey Michael,
Could you tell me more about the Knox translation? I picked it up once by accident in class when I had forgotten to bring a Bible, and it is a very different translation from the ones I generally use. Would you happen to know why?

Hey Michael,

The Knox translation was done by Monsignor Ronald Knox (not the John Knox of Reformation fame in case there is any confusion). It was requested in 1936 by the hierarchy of England and Wales who wanted a completely new translation of the New Testament in more modern English than the Douay Rheims. Knox produced it single-handedly. The New Testament was finished in 1945. The Old Testamant was completed in 1955.
The translation is from the Vulgate "in light of" the originals and with many textual notes. It has a style all of its own, perhaps more discussed than any other modern version to this time.
This translation passed rapidly into common use worldwide in the Catholic community. It has been commended for its freshness of approach, for its lively language, and for the ease with which it may be read. Its style has succeeded in giving meaning to passages which in earlier versions have been difficult to understand.
The translation by Monsignor Knox was presented to meet the need of having in every home a Bible that is easy to read and a joy to handle.
It was in a sense the first of the popular approaches such as the Good News Bible or the Contemporary English Version and though it falls well short of a being paraphrased or amplified translation I would not recommend it for serious detailed study.

aha, I have heard of Ronald Knox, if only because one of our students wanted to put something he had written onto a statue of John Knox which was nearby to where I studied
I've rarely seen the Knox translation quoted - but if it is similar to the CEV that would be why. Though Michel Quoist does quote from it.
