What in your expereince is the best way of memorizeing bible verse'?By subjects?

Hi Ray,over the years,I've jotted down all my favourite verses on a piece of paper which has now run to several pages of around a couple of hundred verses which I've seperated into a whole range of categories such as "Suffering","Comfort","False Prophets","Cults" and so on,and whenever I come across new verses I add them too.I call the compilation "Spiritual Ammo".
I regard them as the beautiful "distilled essence" of Christian doctrine and regularly run my eye down them,with the result that they're now all in my head,as well as on paper.The amazing thing is,I never had to make an effort to memorize them,its as though they've automatically planted themselves in my brain of their own volition and have taken firm root there,like a "steel framework of the soul" that strengthens me tremendously.
In everyday conversation the verses spring straight into my mind like second nature,and i can quote them to suit whatever topic is under discussion.
I can't however,quote the number of the chapter and verse,and would have to look it up!
If anyone wants me to e-mail a copy of my "Spiritual Ammo" quotes,by all means let me know:)

In grad school they told us you aren't here to memorize anything you just want to get a good set of notes.  The idea was that it is better to understand the whole and to know how to find the particulars than to know a whole bunch of facts that you can't relate.  In science this is summed up by Rutherford when he said a collection of facts is no more a science than a pile of bricks is a house.

I would say that a collection of verse is no more a doctrine than a pile of bricks is a house.  Instead of memorizing individual verses I prefer to get a grasp of the whole of scripture by hearing it over and over.  To that end I have a set of audio tapes that I listen to on the way to work each morning and every night.  The Old and New Testament read by Alexander Scorby (sp?), he has a great voice very interesting to listen to.  

By someone else doing the reading it frees the mind to link verses and apply them to issues of doctrine giving an over all impression and thus forming a cohesive doctrine that neither emphasizes, nor neglects one  verse at the expense of another.  

I recently downloaded another narrators version from the Internet and have it on my iPod so I can take it anywhere.

Another great tool I always carry with me is the Franklin Bookman Bible.  It is a little (3 x 4) electronic Bible that you can search.  This way I know what the jist of a verse says and a key word in the verse and can find it (even though I don't have it memorized word for word) and then read it in just a few seconds.  Don't leave home with out it.

2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Please notice that the word memorize is not in this verse at
all. We are to study--delve into--search out the meaning, to
show ourselves approved unto our Lord and King. We do not
study to show off our knowledge, or to impress our fellow
brothers and sisters in the Lord.  We learn the word because
it tells us what the mind of our father , our Lord, and our best
friend it thinking.  When we met our wife/husband we did all
that we could to learn about them, how they thought, how
they felt,who they were, ect.   The same should aply to our
desire to learn the mind of God. Being able to quote chapter
and verse is comendable, being able to hear and know the
mind of God is our ultimate desire.

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

As we learn the word of God - he will bring it back to our
remembrance- and enable us to rightly divide the word of
truth.  As we study and learn, God himself will bring the word
to our enlightenment, showing us both who we are in him, and
showing us as well who he is in us!

Once we reach that point in our relationship with Yeshua, then
you will find that quoting chapter and verse will come very
naturally.

Jam 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

As we see above, we can have what we ask of our father,up
to and including the wisdom of his word.

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.

As we grow in the knowledge of the word of God (Yeshua),
as we begin to know him closely, then we will be able to be
not just someone who can quote the word; but we let others
know that the word is our very life.  Out of the abundance of
the heart the mouth speaketh.
