Not sure if this has been posted here, do you think murderers, killers, rapists are born or made from trauma, abuse, neglection, etc?

"I was born that way. I can't help myself." A reason given by all those that wish to substantiate their doing the sinful things that they wish to do without having any conviction of those sins. It is the humanist, the liberal way of reasoning. Yes, sin is inherit in us all but so is the conviction that we have sinned. The difference is that those that make these humanist claims wish to ignore to do away with those convictions and to continue in their sins.

SeekingGod:

It is true that we were all were born with a sinful nature.  For someone to say "I was born that way", to justify their behavior is someone not wanted to assume responsibility for their own actions.

To murder, rape or commit any other crime (sin) is a result of walking in the "flesh" rather than in the "Spirit".

We have to make a purposefully decision not SIN.  So, it is a choice.  Besides numerous people were abused and neglected as children, but they do not commit such violent crimes.

Hope this doesn't some across too harsh and is of help to you.

Love in Christ, Eva

I realize we were born in sin, due to the fall of Adam and Eve, but I don't  think killers, murders, rapists are born I think they are more made than born. Mainly due to the society they grew up in, abuse, trauma, molestation, etc.

Yet there are many that go through "abuse, trauma, molestation, etc." in the exact same situations as others that do not turn to being "killers, murders, rapists". Again this is not an excuse that many would have us believe it is. Each person is responsible and will be held accountable for what they do. These old time worn excuses of it's someone else's fault doesn't hold water.

Hi seekingGod,

Agreed, we were all born into sin. Even Adam raised the objection when he directly spoke to God, "...The woman which thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat." It was her fault....and even God's who gave her to him.

Even Paul was complicit in murder, particularly Stephen's. But, until he met the Living Christ, he continued to hunt down Christians.

But God has given us a conscience (con means 'with', science means 'knowlege' so we sin 'with knowlege' that what we're doing is wrong). We ultimately know right from wrong. But, Jesus gave us power when He said, "Repent, the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." It was the first message of John the Baptist, it was the message of all the prophets, it was the message of Moses, Repent - you've strayed from God's commands, His ways. You need to Repent (return to God's ways) and sin no more!

It is an awesome power! To finally say, I've sinned, I'm sorry, Forgive me. But God will be just to forgive us our sins - we only need to turn from them; to finally fight our flesh instead of giving it full control. We are more than the sum total of our instincts or passions. We have the power to say 'No, I'll follow my Master, I'll be his disciple, I'll do what is right according to His Word', it's what seperates us from animals. We don't live by instinct, we can live according to His will. It's so easy, and yet we make it so hard.

So maybe God did say to avoid that one tree - but the question is - 'Do you want to eat from the tree? Do you desire it? Our instict is now inclined toward evil - but we all have the power to overcome our 'instinctual desires', and do what we know to be right. It's a hard first step to make when you're drowning in sin, but we all have to take that first step and turn back toward God.

What about in the case of a person who is born mentally handicapped?  They do not have the mental faculties to determine right from wrong and can not tell what they are doing is even wrong.  (I have a personal stake in this with a cousin that was born mentally handicapped and charged with a crime.)

There is such a thing as the age of accountability. While this specific wording is not used in the Bible the teaching is clearly there. This age is not based on a physical age but rather on the ability to know the difference between right and wrong, the ability to make a decision to accept or reject Christ. This age in which a person attains this ability does vary from person to person. It is commonly thought to be between the age of 5 to 13 for most people. Yes, some people due to handicaps may never attain that ability to discern between right and wrong.

Hello StrikeToWin
Here is something that should give us a look of how God  answer about those who do not discerne
Jonah 4:11 KJV      "And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city,
wherein are more than sixcore thousand persons that cannot discerne between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

If so then they couldn't very well be held accountable for what they do could they? I was severely abused by my sorry-excuse-for-a-dad, but instead of becoming an abuser or criminal, I turned to the Lord. I don't care what a person goes through, they can learn right from wrong--unless they're so severely brain damaged that they can't choose. That lame excuse "I was born this way" won't fly with God.

And I would add that alcoholism is also a choice, not a disease. We cannot catch alcoholism and we are not born with it. It was a choice to take those first drinks.
