A Florida man is facing first-degree murder charges for allegedly killing his 4-month-old daughter.

Every time Marcos Gomez-Romero looked at Ariana Rodriguez-Romero he would get angry, because she was not the boy he wanted, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

The 28-year-old told investigators he starting beating her months ago — slapping her as she slept, the newspaper reported.

She died on Christmas Day and, on Thursday, a grand jury indicted him on first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse charges, the newspaper reported.

Ariana had dozens of internal and external injuries, including fractured ribs and a cut spleen, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

According to a Polk County Sheriff's Office report, Gomez-Romero told police he called his daughter an "ugly, girl, prostitute and deny [sic] she was his daughter," the newspaper reported.

He would pick the little girl up by her hands to carry her and told police he often spanked her out of anger for no reason, according to the report.

Ariana's mother Juana Rodriguez-Perez told police she threatened to call the police on him, but he said he would flee with their 2-year-old son, the newspaper reported.

Police say Alabama shrimper threw his 4 children off bridge

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. — A day after reporting his four young children were missing, a shrimp fisherman broke down and confessed that he threw them off an 80-foot-high bridge to their deaths, authorities said Wednesday.

Lam Luong, 37, was charged with four counts of capital murder, and divers searched the murky waters for the bodies of the youngsters, who ranged in age from a few months to 3 years.

Luong had a drug habit and had argued with his wife, Ngoc Phan, before taking the children, said Phan's brother-in-law, Kam Phengsisomboun.

Authorities said they believe Luong drove on Monday to the two-lane Dauphin Island bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway, stopped at the highest part of the span and threw the youngsters over the side.

Luong reported the children missing Monday, initially telling police that a woman who had the youngsters failed to return them, authorities said.

Missing and presumed dead were 4-month-old Danny Luong; 1-year-old Lindsey Luong; 2-year-old Hannah Luong; and 3-year-old Ryan Phan. Phan is not the man's biological child, but Luong raised him from infancy, authorities said.

About 70 people in boats and helicopters searched water up to 55 feet deep. The search area covered 100 square miles because the current might have swept the children away, Sheriff Sam Cochran said.

Luong was scheduled to appear in court Thursday. District Attorney John Tyson said he did not believe Luong had a lawyer.

Luong came to Alabama from Vietnam in 1984 and worked as a shrimper, Phengsisomboun said. The couple lived with Phan's mother at Bayou La Batre, a fishing village 20 miles southwest of Mobile with a large Southeast Asian community.

Phengsisomboun said the couple had recently moved back to the area from Hinesville, Ga.

They argued Sunday night and again Monday, and Luong left the home with two of the children, then later came back for the other two, the brother-in-law said. Phengsisomboun said he did not know what the couple argued about.

The family initially feared he had traded the children to support his drug habit, Phengsisomboun said. Luong had a crack habit and had run through an insurance settlement from an auto accident, he said. Authorities in Mobile confirmed Luong had a history of drug abuse but had no details.

He was arrested in October in Hinesville on a crack-possession charge.

Phengsisomboun said he was later told by investigators that a witness had seen someone throw a bundle from the bridge and then saw three children in a nearby car.

Phan, 23, was in seclusion Wednesday morning at her mother's brick home, the front porch cluttered with children's shoes.

Court Ends Bible Distribution in School

ST. LOUIS -- A rural school district's long-standing practice of allowing the distribution of Bibles to grade school students is unconstitutional, a federal judge has ruled.

An attorney for the southeastern Missouri school district said Wednesday he will appeal the judge's injunction against the practice.

For more than three decades, the South Iron School District in Annapolis, 120 miles southwest of St. Louis in the heart of the Bible Belt, allowed representatives of Gideons International to give away Bibles in fifth-grade classrooms.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit two years ago on behalf of four sets of parents. In August, a three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a temporary injunction against the practice.

The district altered its policy, saying the Gideons and others were still welcome to distribute Bibles or other literature before or after school or during lunch break, but not in classrooms.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Catherine Perry ruled both practices were illegal and granted a permanent injunction.

The purpose of both practices "is the promotion of Christianity by distributing Bibles to elementary school students," Perry wrote. "The policy has the principle or primary effect of advancing religion by conveying a message of endorsement to elementary school children."

Mathew Staver, president of Liberty Counsel, a Florida-based law group that represented the school district, said he would appeal.

"I think the current policy creates an open forum that allows secular as well as religious persons or groups to access the forum to distribute information," Staver said. "The court has clearly misread the First Amendment and the cases regarding free speech."

The parents who sued are Christian but believe religious beliefs should be taught in the home, not school, said Anthony Rothert, legal director of the ACLU of Eastern Missouri.

The South Iron district has about 500 students in the grade school and South Iron High School.

Superintendent Brad Crocker was out of the office Wednesday and did not respond to a call seeking comment.

Gideons International, based in Nashville, Tenn., distributes Bibles in more than 80 languages and 180 countries, according to its Web site. A spokesman did not return a phone call seeking comment.

LONDON (AFP) - Eyebrows were raised in the House of Commons on Thursday when a motion calling for the Church of England to be disestablished was listed with the number 666, symbol of the AntiChrist.

"This number is supposed to be the mark of the Devil. It looks as though God or the Devil have been moving in mysterious ways," said Bob Russell, a Liberal Democrat MP among those proposing the motion for debate.

"What is even stranger is that this motion was tabled last night when MPs were debating blasphemy," he added.

The motion calls for an end to the formal link between Church and State in England -- embodied in the monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, who is both head of state and head of the Church of England.

The number 666 is referred to in the Book of Revelations in the Bible: "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred, three score and six."

"It is is incredible that a motion like this should have, by chance, acquired this significant number," said Russell.

Dad Sodomized Teen Stepson to Avenge Rape of Daughter

FORT WORTH, Texas —
A father sodomized his 18-year-old stepson to avenge the teenager's alleged rape of the man's 8-year-old daughter, police said.

The father, 32, turned himself into to authorities on Friday and was released from jail Saturday after posting a $17,500 bond. He faces a charge of aggravated sexual assault.

The stepson was arrested Jan. 2 and charged with suspicion of aggravated sexual assault. Police say the father caught him assaulting his daughter, and a subsequent examination at a hospital revealed the girl had been sodomized.

Sgt. Cheryl Johnson, supervisor of the Fort Worth sex crimes unit, said in a story posted Saturday on the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Web site that people need to "allow the criminal justice system to work for them."

"This is a very unique case, but we have a criminal justice system in place, and no one can take the law into their own hands," Johnson said.

The Star-Telegram didn't identify the father or the stepson to protect the identity of the girl. Fort Worth police didn't immediately return phone and e-mail messages from The Associated Press.

When the stepson was arrested, the man warned his wife not to get the teenager out of jail. She posted bond for the teen's release. When he called home Jan. 3 after getting released, the father took the call and picked him up, police said.

Instead of taking the teenager home, the Arlington man drove to an abandoned house in Fort Worth, beat his stepson with a baseball bat and sodomized him with a metal tool, police said.

After the man left, the stepson found a pay phone and called police, who searched the abandoned home.

"We did find evidence at the scene to corroborate our victim's story," Johnson said.

VATICAN CITY, JAN. 13, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI baptized 13 babies, giving them the sacrament that he said opened heaven for them.

Amid the crying of eight baby girls and five baby boys resounding in the Sistine Chapel, the Pope expressed his joy at imparting the first sacrament of Christian life to the newborns, "one of the most expressive moments of our faith."

In his homily for the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the Holy Father reflected on the "mystery of life": of the human life represented here by the newborns and the divine life that God gives to the baptized.

The children's parents, employees of Vatican City, were accompanied by the babies' godparents and a small group of relatives.

Noting Michelangelo's paintings in the chapel, the Pontiff spoke of "the experience of life and what is opposed to it, namely, the reality of death."

He said: "In baptism, the little human being receives a new life, the life of grace, which makes him capable of entering into a personal relationship with the Creator, and this forever, for all eternity.

"Unfortunately, man is capable of snuffing out this new life with his sin, closing himself up in a situation that sacred Scripture calls ‘second death.'

"While in the other creatures, who are not called to eternal life, death means only the end of existence on earth; in us, sin creates a precipice that we run the risk of falling from forever, unless the Father who is in heaven takes us by his hand."

This is the mystery of baptism, Benedict XVI explained: "God wanted to save us by going himself into the very depths of the abyss of death so that every man, even he who has fallen so deep into the abyss as to no longer see heaven, can find the hand of God by which he can climb back up out of the darkness to see the light again for which he is made.

The Holy Father celebrated the Eucharist at the ancient altar placed against the wall beneath the painting of the Last Judgment, instead of on the platform with an added altar "so as not to alter the beauty and harmony of this architectural jewel," a Vatican note explained.

That placement of the altar, added the note, implied that in some moments the Pope "had his back to the faithful and his gaze upon the cross, orienting the attitude and disposition of the whole assembly in this way," though he did not use the 1962 missal.

The stark CONTRAST between man and GOD has never been so OBVIOUS! For the things that are false, glory goes to man. For the things that are TRUE, ALL GLORY GOES TO GOD! - none to man! This has become one of the least complicated and easiest ways to identify the FALSE. Step two is agreement with the teachings of the HOLY BIBLE - GOD'S WORD.

Brothers and Sisters, we live in a day and age where false doctrines and cults receive more attention than the TRUTH! Many people are easily lead astray, especially the lost. This is very sad, and the only way I know to combat it is to tell the blunt TRUTH! The world needs JESUS CHRIST. JESUS CHRIST is the LIGHT, and there is NO darkness in HIM. A group of women whose relatives were killed in the Beslan school siege are to go on trial in Russia today after they accused President Vladimir Putin of complicity in the deaths.

The Voice of Beslan group has been charged with "extremism" over an appeal to politicians in Europe and the US which implied that Putin assisted terrorists.

The prosecution was launched under legislation introduced last year which civil rights activists warned could be used to attack critics of the Kremlin.

More than 1,000 people were taken hostage during the siege in 2004, when militants seized a school in Beslan, North Ossetia, a region bordering Chechnya. The three-day stand-off with security forces ended in a bloodbath when two explosions destroyed part of the school gymnasium and provoked a gun battle. A total of 334 people died, more than half of them children.

No senior official was put on trial, despite numerous witnesses testifying that the rescue attempt was a shambles. An investigation by federal MPs found the militants were at fault for all the deaths.

Relatives of the dead and some local politicians insist security forces fired on the gymnasium before it was fully evacuated. The Voice of Beslan said in its release that Putin was "a president who solves his problems with tanks and flame-throwers". He had become a "guarantor for criminals", it added. Prosecutors, who claimed they found the appeal during routine monitoring of the internet, said the accusations were unlawful.

Voice of Beslan has led a campaign to get security service officials charged over the siege. Last year members of the group erected a sign pointing at the ruins of the Beslan school reading "Putin's Course".

Emma Tagaeva, the chairman of Voice of Beslan, described the prosecution as "an order from Moscow", in revenge for the group's struggle for justice. In a letter to Putin asking him to halt today's prosecution, she wrote: "We consider you guilty of the deaths of our children but does that represent a manifestation of extremism? Will it bring honour to the law enforcement organs to accuse the victims of a terrible tragedy of extremism?"

Human rights activists have spoken out against the trial. Lyudmila Alekseeva, head of the Moscow Helsinki Group, said: "This is all happening because Voice of Beslan is making every effort so that the investigation into the deaths of such a huge number of children and adults doesn't go quiet. That's why the might of the state, the court system and administrative methods are being used to battle against these unfortunate women who lost their children."

The law was amended in 2006 to expand the definition of extremist activity to include public slander of a government official while performing his duties. Critics said the changes would be used by the Kremlin to silence opponents. Under Russian law a person who publishes extremist literature can be jailed for up to three years.

Lev Ponomaryov, head of the For Human Rights movement, said: "If this approach to the problem of extremism is taken, then every opposition figure in Russia could be charged."

The other typical response is for muslim leaders( to completely ignore the truth) and to immediately begin the "Call to Whine" about supposed Islamophobia and how mistreated they are by Europeans -- even though it has been proven that Islamophobia is a fabrication and there is NO anti-muslim backlash in Europe. (It should be noted that the numbers of muslims will overtake Austrian Protestants by 2010 another indication that muslims are exceptionally well treated in Europe to the point that Europe is being Islamicized.)

Hate crime legislation is being used repeatedly to silence any and all dissenters who speak out against the Islamization of Europe. Austrian authorities investigate Islam-bashing by rightist lawmaker

Vienna - Remarks by a right-wing politician denouncing Islam and accusing the Prophet Mohammed of having been a paedophile provoked widespread outrage in Austria on Monday, with authorities investigating whether they constituted hate speech.

Susanne Winter, a candidate for the Freedom Party in local elections in Graz in south-eastern Austria, said on Sunday that Mohammed's marriage to a 6-year-old girl would make the prophet a 'paedophile in today's system.'

Speaking at a rally, Winter demanded that Islam should be 'thrown back where it came from, beyond the Mediterranean Sea.'

Winter later justified her attacks. 'There is widespread child abuse by Muslim men,' she was quoted as saying by the newspaper Oesterreich.

'Why can't I say this? That has nothing to do with hate speech. We want neither Austrian nor foreign paedophiles. I did not want to incite hatred, or offend a religious community,' she said.

Austria's authorities were investigating whether Winter's remarks constituted incitement to hatred, a spokesman from the prosecutor's office said. If found guilty, Winter could face up to two years in prison.

Politicians from all other factions sharply denounced Winter's remarks and called for her resignation.

Muslim representatives in Austria criticized the remarks. Omar al- Rawi, a spokesman for Austria's Muslim community, slammed the lack of respect shown by the right-wing politician.

Attacks against Islam had reached a level that 'made one's stomach turn,' al-Rawi said.

Graz will elect a local government on January 20. In the 2006 general elections the Freedom Party received 13 per cent of the vote.

The affair is reminiscent of the controversy over cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed, published in a Danish newspaper in September 2005 that later caused international protests, resulting in a number of deaths.

Ga. church leader accused of perjury

ATLANTA - An 80-year-old leader of a suburban megachurch who is at the center of a sex scandal has been charged with lying under oath for saying he had sex outside marriage with only one other woman, court documents show.

A warrant for the arrest of Archbishop Earl Paulk, co-founder of Cathedral of the Holy Spirit at Chapel Hill Harvester Church, was issued Monday, according to court documents. Paulk was making arrangements Monday night to turn himself in, WAGA-TV reported.

His attorneys did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Former church employee Mona Brewer is suing Paulk, his brother and the church on allegations that Paulk manipulated her into an affair from 1989 to 2003 by telling her it was her only path to salvation. In a 2006 deposition stemming from the lawsuit, the archbishop said under oath that the only woman he had ever had sex with outside of his marriage was Brewer.

But the results of a court-ordered paternity test revealed in October that Paulk is the biological father of his brother's son, D.E. Paulk, who is now head pastor at the church. As part of Brewer's lawsuit, eight women have given sworn depositions that they were coerced into sexual relationships with Earl Paulk.

A judge ordered the paternity test at the request of the Cobb County district attorney's office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. District Attorney Pat Head declined to comment when reached at his home Monday night.

Paulk and his brother, Don, have been hit with lawsuits from former members alleging they were coerced into sexual affairs, but this is the first time criminal charges have been filed against the archbishop.

The other typical response is for muslim leaders( to completely ignore the truth) and to immediately begin the "Call to Whine" about supposed Islamophobia and how mistreated they are by Europeans -- even though it has been proven that Islamophobia is a fabrication and there is NO anti-muslim backlash in Europe. (It should be noted that the numbers of muslims will overtake Austrian Protestants by 2010 another indication that muslims are exceptionally well treated in Europe to the point that Europe is being Islamicized.)

Hate crime legislation is being used repeatedly to silence any and all dissenters who speak out against the Islamization of Europe. Austrian authorities investigate Islam-bashing by rightist lawmaker

Vienna - Remarks by a right-wing politician denouncing Islam and accusing the Prophet Mohammed of having been a paedophile provoked widespread outrage in Austria on Monday, with authorities investigating whether they constituted hate speech.

Susanne Winter, a candidate for the Freedom Party in local elections in Graz in south-eastern Austria, said on Sunday that Mohammed's marriage to a 6-year-old girl would make the prophet a 'paedophile in today's system.'

Speaking at a rally, Winter demanded that Islam should be 'thrown back where it came from, beyond the Mediterranean Sea.'

Winter later justified her attacks. 'There is widespread child abuse by Muslim men,' she was quoted as saying by the newspaper Oesterreich.

'Why can't I say this? That has nothing to do with hate speech. We want neither Austrian nor foreign paedophiles. I did not want to incite hatred, or offend a religious community,' she said.

Austria's authorities were investigating whether Winter's remarks constituted incitement to hatred, a spokesman from the prosecutor's office said. If found guilty, Winter could face up to two years in prison.

Politicians from all other factions sharply denounced Winter's remarks and called for her resignation.

Muslim representatives in Austria criticized the remarks. Omar al- Rawi, a spokesman for Austria's Muslim community, slammed the lack of respect shown by the right-wing politician.

Attacks against Islam had reached a level that 'made one's stomach turn,' al-Rawi said.

Graz will elect a local government on January 20. In the 2006 general elections the Freedom Party received 13 per cent of the vote.

The affair is reminiscent of the controversy over cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed, published in a Danish newspaper in September 2005 that later caused international protests, resulting in a number of deaths.

1st animal-human embryo trials to go ahead 
UK approves research teams to carry out controversial work

Experiments to create Britain’s first embryos that merge human and animal material will begin within months after a Government watchdog today approved two research teams to carry out the controversial work.

Scientists at King’s College London and the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne will now inject human DNA into empty eggs from cows, to create embryos known as cytoplasmic hybrids that are 99.9 per cent human in genetic terms.

The experiments are intended to provide insights into diseases such as Parkinson’s and spinal muscular atrophy by producing stem cells containing genetic defects that contribute to these conditions.

These will be used as cell models for investigating new approaches to treatment and for improving understanding of how embryonic stem cells develop. They will not be used in therapy, and it is illegal to implant them into the womb.

The decision by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to grant one-year licences to both teams ends more than a year of uncertainty for the researchers, who first applied for permission to start the work in the autumn of 2006.

Last January the authority deferred a decision and launched a consultation on the issue, which reported in September that the public was broadly supportive. In late November it again delayed ruling because of concerns about procedures for obtaining consent from the donors of the human DNA to be used.

While the HFEA was deliberating, the Government first proposed a ban on the creation of human-animal embryos, also known as “cybrids”, then backtracked after a revolt by scientists.

The creation of human-animal embryos will be explicitly permitted by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill currently passing through Parliament, subject to HFEA licensing. An amendment that would have blocked such research was defeated in the House of Lords on Monday by a majority of 172.

Stephen Minger, who leads the King’s team, said yesterday he was delighted that he would finally be able to start the experiments. “I am pleased that the HFEA has finally after a year and a half realised the importance that the work that we and the group from Newcastle have been licensed for,” he said.

“I am grateful to the scientific community, patient organisations and disease charities for all of the support we have received over the past 18 months. Their backing has been invaluable. This shows that the scientific community can be involved in and influence government policy.”

Lyle Armstrong, who leads the Newcastle group, said: “The award of the HFEA licence is great news. We initially applied for approval to use cow eggs as a means to understand the way they can convert skin cells into embryonic stem cells. Finding better ways to make human embryonic stem cells is the long-term objective of our work and understanding reprogramming is central to this.

“Cow eggs seem to be every bit as good at doing this job as human eggs so it makes sense to use them since they are much more readily available, but it is important to stress that we will only use them as a scientific tool and we need not worry about cells derived from them ever being used to treat human diseases.”

The HFEA has attached conditions to each of the one-year licences but these are not expected to be a barrier to either research project.

The Newcastle group has been asked to provide patient consent forms and to obtain approval from the university’s ethics committee before working with DNA from donated skin cells but it has been cleared to start work immediately using DNA from the UK Stem Cell Bank.

It had originally proposed to use human tissue from a commercial US bank but this was rejected because the donors had not given explicit consent for their cells to be used for making cloned embryos that would be destroyed in experiments.

The King’s licence requires Professor Minger to complete an HFEA training course, which is a formality as he has previously held similar licences. It also requires approval from a local ethics committee before work can begin, which is expected to be granted now the HFEA has ruled positively.

Some critics of cybrid embryos have argued that their use is no longer necessary, given the recent development of a reprogramming technique that can turn back the clock on adult tissue to make “induced pluripotent” stem cells with embryo-like properties, but the HFEA licence committee rejected this.

“The committee considered the emergence of new technologies for reprogramming adult somatic [non-reproductive] cells and agreed that, while very promising, these new technologies do not obviate the need for the basic research into differentiation of pluripotential embryonic stem cells as proposed in this application,” it said.

The decision was welcomed by independent stem cell expertts. Professor Robin Lovell-Badge, of the National Institute for Medical Research in London, said: “The HFEA’s decision is excellent as it adds to the arsenal of techniques UK scientists can use to provide understanding and eventually develop therapies for a wide range of devastating genetic diseases.

“The cloning method allows a patient’s cells to be reprogrammed back into early embryos from which valuable embryonic stem cells can be isolated, and it is the latter that will be studied. While scientists may prefer to use human eggs, these are in short supply and preference should rightly be for their use in treating infertility.

“It is logical to use animal eggs to refine techniques, provide knowledge of reprogramming and early development, and understanding of disease mechanisms. Furthermore, while there are new methods of reprogramming adult cells back to pluripotent embryonic stem-like cells, namely induced pluripotent stem cells, it is important to pursue all avenues as we cannot know in advance which will succeed. Besides, a comparative approach often reveals the most.”
