Baptist group elects first woman president

The nation's largest Baptist convention elected its first female president on Monday.

Retired missionary Joy Fenner was elected president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. She defeated preacher David Lowrie by 60 votes, 900 to 840.

The moderate organization is the state's largest Baptist group with 5,600 affiliated congregations and more than 2.3 million members. Less than 1 percent of the convention's pastors are female.

The moderate organization has distanced itself from some Southern Baptist leaders who have issued declarations that women should not be pastors and that wives should "graciously submit" to their husbands.

Fenner, a longtime mission worker, got her start as a church secretary at First Baptist Church in Marshall during the 1950s. She served as a missionary in Japan for 13 years.

Last year, the convention named her to the office of first vice president, putting her in position to serve the one-year term as president in 2008.

The Texas organization recently appointed its first Hispanic and black presidents.

The Southern Baptist leaders are correct. This is from the Bible, telling us.

I think they are not fully correct because women should be treated equal and have equal authority. Women not being Pastor I'll agree. However wives should not have to submit.

Ah David.  You are so cute!  Having a strong personality I would love to say you are right, however the Bible says that wifes are to submit to their husbands.
Now some folks get this confused with being a "slave" and that is not the case.  Husbands and wifes are partners.  And a husband should seek counsel with his wife, however when it comes down the the final decision the wife is to submit to her husband.
Now there is an upside to this:  If the husband turns out to be wrong the wife gets to say, "I TOLD you so!"

Let me give you a few verses on this Brother David.

Eph 5:22  Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Eph 5:23  For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
Eph 5:24  Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

Col 3:18  Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

Heb 13:17  Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

The wife is supposed to submit themselves to the husband. This does not make them a slave or less than their husbands nor should they be treated as such. As it also says "as it is fit in the Lord" which tells us that it should be in a Godly manner. The man is to be the head of a marriage as Christ is the head of the church.

This is according to God's word so that there is no chaos in the marriage and each doing their own thing going different ways.

I have heard that before firsthand.   Grin Grin

I understand now, thank you Pastor Roger. God bless
