Pro-lifers say Congress may be funding illegal abortions
The leader of a women's pro-life group says Congress may be funding illegal abortions -- and she says it's time for that to stop.
Concerned Women for America (CWA) and 59 other organizations sent a letter Wednesday to every senator and representative on Capitol Hill asking them to suspend the more than $300 million in federal funding they send to Planned Parenthood each year. According to a 107-count complaint filed in Johnson County (Kansas) District Court last week, Planned Parenthood purposefully performed illegal late-term abortions in violation of Kansas state law and unlawfully falsified documents to conceal that fact.
CWA president Wendy Wright says it is time for abortion clinics to be held accountable.
"One third of Planned Parenthood's income comes from the government," she points out. "Planned Parenthood takes our money -- and when they're accused of violating laws, they arrogantly insist that no one dare question them because they claim they're 'doing it for the women.'"
Wright is calling on elected officials in Washington, DC, to do something about that. "Government officials have a duty to hold Planned Parenthood accountable when innocent lives die due to its skirting of regulations and laws," she says. "Our tax dollars should not go to organizations involved in illegal activities."
Wright argues the issue at stake goes beyond being pro-life or pro-abortion, saying the rule of law applies to everyone -- including abortionists.
