Forgotten Americans Coalition aims to stem Left's momentum
A pro-family activist and former presidential activist is heading up a new coalition aimed at stemming the momentum of the Left.
The group is called the Forgotten American Coalition, and is composed of pro-family leaders like Dr. Don Wildmon, Pat Robertson, Paul Weyrich, Phil Burress, and Tim and Beverly LaHaye. Gary Bauer of American Values is the coalition chairman. He says many of these leaders are social conservatives who rarely speak out on the war on terrorism, but believe it is extremely important to do so now.
"We believe it's a moral issue. There are few things that would be more immoral than to allow Western civilization to be defeated by Islamo-fascism, which inevitably would mean that the world would sink into another dark age," says Bauer.
Bauer says the Coalition wants to counter extreme leftist groups like MoveOn.org. "It called General Petreaus basically a traitor who had betrayed us, in a full-page ad in the New York Times. So we're deeply worried that the left seems to have the money and the momentum, and we want to try to counter them on these issues," he says.
According to Bauer, the conservative movement has fallen on hard times and has lost focus. And with an election some 14 months away, the Forgotten American Coalition wants to get back to the basics of standing up for the values of mainstream America. He says the basic issues conservatives have cared about are sanctity of life, pro-family, strong national defense, smaller government, and lower taxes.
