Sen. Sessions blasts Democratic leader for dropping defense bill

Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) is criticizing Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-Nevada) decision to pull the Defense Authorization bill from the Senate floor -- a bill that included pay raises for military personnel and special "wounded warrior" provisions.



The Alabama lawmaker says the all-night Iraq debate staged by the Democrats Tuesday night accomplished nothing -- and Senator Reid's decision to withdraw the defense bill was unnecessary.

"This bill has a nice raise for our personnel, [our] military personnel," Sessions explains. "It had a 'wounded warriors' series of provisions that really is going to be beneficial to our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who've been injured in the course of serving their country," the senator states.

Sessions also criticized the Levin-Reid amendment that called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. The amendment never made it into the bill -- and Sessions remarks that if it had, the Defense Authorization legislation would have been vetoed by President Bush.

Calling Reid's decision to remove the bill from the floor an act of "pique and frustration" that makes no sense, Sessions urges the Senate to pass a defense bill that will "do the things we need to do for our soldiers" and to do it quickly.
