Family of girl, 12, sues after 'Brokeback' shown in class

May 13, 2007
FROM SUN-TIMES WIRES

A suit was filed on behalf of a 12-year-old girl who claims she suffered psychological distress when a teacher showed in class the gay-themed movie "Brokeback Mountain."

The girl, Jessica Turner, and her grandparents Kenneth and LaVerne Richardson, are seeking more than $400,000 in damages under the suit filed Friday against the Chicago Board of Education and others.

According to the suit, a substitute teacher introduced herself as Ms. Buford to Jessica's class at Ashburn Community Elementary School, 8300 S. St. Louis Ave. She then said, "What happens in Ms. Buford's class stays in Ms. Buford's class," the suit claims. Buford then had a student close the door, and started showing the controversial R-rated film, which features two men engaged in sex.

The suit alleges Ashburn's principal, Jewel A. Diaz, was aware that the tale of the love between two cowboys set in the West of the 1960s was being shown to the minors.

Turner later told her grandfather that she was confined to her seat and felt she could not leave the room, according to the suit filed in Cook County Circuit Court.

The plaintiffs accuse Diaz, Buford and the Chicago Board of Education of negligence, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The suit claims Jessica continues to suffer from emotional distress caused by watching the film and is currently undergoing psychological treatment and counseling.

Brothers and Sisters,

It wasn't that long ago that this teacher would have spent 10 years or more in prison for showing this obscene filth to children under the age of 18. The old laws were just fine, and they should have left them alone.

Adultery and sodomy were felonies with prison time, and unlawful cohabitation outside the bonds of marriage was a misdemeanor with jail time. Folks, this wasn't long ago at all. Regarding all the filthy stuff some are trying in schools, all of that was felonies - with or without pictures or any graphic representation. Just written words qualified as a felony, AND THIS WAS RIGHT!

Brothers and Sisters, this wasn't long ago at all. People trying this kind of sick filth went to jail and prison, and that's where they belong. Nobody had any questions or doubts because people who try to PERVERT and EXPLOIT our children deserve to be punished in jail or prison. Further, their access to our children should be ended forever!

TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY! Maybe it wasn't your child or grandchild today, but it could be tomorrow!

Unfortunately we are reaping what we sow in this. We stood by and allowed prayer, the Bible and any mention of God to be taken from our schools. We allowed laws against Christianity to be passed. All in the name of diversity and tolerance.

More Christians should stand up as these grandparents are doing, fighting the evil that has permeated our schools, our nation, our world. Laws need to be changed, Christians need to stand up and be accounted for, our politicians need to be made to understand that we will not stand for this nonsense any longer.

Hello Brother Roger,

This might sound funny, but this is what just crossed my mind, and I think that it makes some sense.

Maybe it's time for a Christian Party, and call it just that - why hide it? Independents and the Constitutional Party have a hard time, and many of them would probably fit well in a Christian Party.

We need a real alternative with a chance to win when we vote. If nothing else, maybe we could wake up the politicians and send them a message that they might all be looking for work. It isn't a real alternative if we are just voting for a lesser evil. Some past elections did involve voting for a lesser evil, and I'm not talking about Bush. I think that a real third party with some clout would be good for this country. In fact, it's far past time for a real third political party.

Problem is that we are becoming weak. We want to not to push our beliefs down their throats, so we back off. We say, "put it in God's hands" but who will then speak for him? We need to step up and yes, get a little pushy.

Eph 6:12  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Brother Tom, great idea!  The lines separating church and state have already been severely crossed by those wishing to further their agendas.  Jesus is the only answer to the ills of this nation.  Of course, we can expect extreme opposition from the ACLU.  I say...let the battle begin!

Amen Brother Tom. It is indeed past time for Christians to gain their own political party. Unfortunately their is already a group that has tagged the name "Christian Party". It is far from Christian though as it is very racist as it is anti-semitic, anti-black and anti-Hispanic. Their primary agenda is to send all black people "back to Africa".

There is little if anything in their platform that even resembles a Christian attitude.

Irregardless of what it is called it should be "in-your-face" obvious and intent on restoring to government the Christian ideals set forth by the founding fathers. We need good Christian leaders that are strong in the Lord with a calling to return us to a Christian nation.

As David said, someone not afraid to stand up for Jesus and get a little pushy.

Brother Roger,

I haven't heard about the "Christian" Party, so I guess that I stuck my foot in my mouth all the way up to the knee.   Grin   Their reputation stands as an example about why many people get confused when they hear the term "Christian". It sounds like they should have called themselves the "Skin Head" Party instead of the "Christian" Party.

WOW! - I never cease to be amazed. SO, what should we call our new party that couldn't be easily soiled by some weird group of loonies?  Let me go and see if I can pull my foot out of my mouth.   Grin

Fortunately it is a very small party that is far from being influential. Skin Heads is a pretty accurate description of it. The largest group that supports this party is the Aryan Nation.

Don't feel bad, brother. I did the same thing on another forum back in 2004 and had my foot in my mouth over it also   Wink only I went much further.   Cheesy Cheesy
