."I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified, and kept me in the one true faith ." - Martin Luther

The Holy Bible

Rom 10:17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Rom 3:22  Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
Rom 3:23  For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Rom 3:24  Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Rom 3:25  Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Rom 3:26  To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

thanks for your reply Pastor Rogers, however I was wondering if you agree with Dr. Luther or do you believe the verses you quoted disagree with his statement.   Huh

My post was not intended for either purpose. Rather it is simply the scriptures that came to mind when I read it.

But since you asked, I think that Jesus Christ said it best:

Joh 5:30  I can of mine own self do nothing ...

Joh 15:5  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Heb. 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
