Global warming skeptic blasts Crow's campaign against toilet paper

A spokesman for a Senate panel on the environment says celebrities who are urging people to ration toilet paper to fight global warming are "appropriately being laughed at."

Singer and celebrity activist Sheryl Crow has made headlines of late for advocating a limit on the amount of toilet paper people use. Crow suggested using "only one square per restroom visit" would help reduce global warming. And during an Earth Day segment on ABC's Good Morning America, Diane Sawyer expressed consternation that "the average American rips off three feet of toilet paper in each visit to the bathroom."

Mark Morano, communications director for the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, notes that the toilet paper dilemma is nothing new among global warming alarmists. "This follows Hollywood actress Daphne Zuniga of Melrose Place fame saying that trees are being slaughtered for toilet paper; this follows the whole green movement going after the flush toilet; it follows them going after clothes dryers; it follows them going after a whole host of anything that we might consider modern society," he says.

"So this is not a joke," Morano insists. "This is absolutely very serious. The problem is they don't have any science on their side," he says. In fact, the Senate committee official asserts, science suggests that the trees that many environmentalists are trying to save, in some cases, may actually cause global warming. "Trees in a northern climate -- a new study came out and said they actually could contribute to global warming, because a dark forest is going to absorb more sunlight, which is going to heat up that area," he notes.

"And one of the studies said northern climates could see up to ten degrees Fahrenheit increase from northern forests," Morano continues. "So the world is not this simple, let's-buy-a-carbon-offset, let's do this -- it just doesn't work that way," he contends, "and for Sheryl Crow to try and simplify the global warming issue down to a single square of toilet paper is laughable, and she's being appropriately laughed at." He says Crow may claim she is being symbolic or joking, but she is not.

If environmentalists want there to more trees, Morano adds, they need to use more wood, because trees are a renewable resource. Meanwhile, TheSmokingGun.com reports that Sheryl Crow's tour caravan is far from environmentally-friendly or energy conscious, as it includes three tractor-trailer rigs, four buses and six cars.
