Seek the Edification of Our Neighbour

Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. Rom. 15:2

May I from every act abstain,
That hurts or gives another pain:

To be the friend of all mankind.

Love to All Men

The Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you. 1 Thess. 3:12

May love, that shining grace,
O'er all my powers preside;
Direct my thoughts, suggest my words,
And every action guide.

To Seek the Salvation of Others

He which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. James 5:20

My God, I feel the mournful scene;
My bowels yearn o'er dying men;
And fain my pity would reclaim,
And snatch the firebrands from the flame.

Give Due Honour to All

Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. Rom. 13:7

Our sovereign with thy favour bless;
Stablish the throne in righteousness,
Let wisdom hold the helm;
The counsels of our senate guide,
Let justice in our courts preside,
Rule thou, and bless the realm.

Consistency

That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world. Phil. 2:15

That wisdom, Lord, on us bestow
From every evil to depart,
To stop the mouth of every foe,
While upright both in life and heart,
The proof of godly fear we give,
And show them how the Christians live.

Circumspection

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise. Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Eph. 5:15, 16

Let every flying hour confess
I gain the gospel fresh renown;
And when my life and labours cease,
May I possess the promised crown.

Discretion

A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. Psalm 112:5

Believers love what God commands,
And in his ways delight;
Their gracious words, and holy hands
Show that their faith is right.

Their converse is with God above,
Their labours bless mankind;
Their works of mercy, peace, and love,
Through Christ acceptance find.

Moderation

Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Phil. 4:5

We'll look on all the toys below
With such disdain as angels do;
And wait the call that bids us rise
To mansions promised in the skies.

Forbearance

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Rom. 12:19

May I feel beneath my wrongs
Vengeance to the Lord belongs;
Nor a worse requital dare,
Than meek revenge of prayer:
Much forgiven, may I learn,
Love for hatred to return.

Industry

Let a man labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that ye may have to give to him that needeth. Eph. 4:28

To thee my very life I owe;
From thee do all my comforts flow;
And every blessing which I need
Must from thy bounteous hand proceed.

Integrity

That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing. 1 Thess. 4:12

Come, let us search our ways, and try
Have they been just and right;
Is the great rule of equity
Our practice and delight?

In all we sell, in all we buy,
Is justice our design?
Do we remember God is nigh,
And fear the wrath Divine?

Fidelity

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. Luke 16:10

Thy gifts are only then enjoy'd
When used as talents lent;
Those talents only well employ'd
When in his service spent.

Truth and Sincerity

Wherefore, putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Eph. 4:25

Let those who bear the Christian name
Their holy vows fulfil;
The saints, the followers of the Lamb,
Are men of honour still.

Gentleness and Meekness

Speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness to all men. Tit. 3:2

Bless'd are the men of peaceful life,
Who quench the coals of growing strife,
They shall be called the heirs of bliss,
The sons of God, the sons of peace.

Benevolence

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from teh world. James 1:27

The poor are always with us here:
'Tis our great Father's plan,
That mutual wants and mutual care
Should bind us man to man.
